I understand that a viola de gamba is not only harder to play but quite a different instrument when compared to the cello (not that I am suggesting the cello is easy). It is great to see these instruments still being played today.
This music and the performance are both exalting. So evocative; so affirmative; so branching; so grounded! thank you for all your years of study to bring this delight to others, to encourage the ongoing quest… Greetings from Philadelphia!
A wonderful baroque drawing of this violinist lady Penelope Spencer. All the charm from earthly flowering in the melody of this violin, as it were, to ascension, as it were, "to the third heaven" in the flowering of clouds. And the basso continuo group (Jakob Rattinger - Viola da gamba, Rüdiger Kurz - Bass gambe, Rien Voskuilen - Cembalo) is similar to the pichikato (pizzicato) dance of angelic feet. I love the music of Antonio Bertali was an Italian composer and violinist of the Baroque era of Verona who received early music education there from Stefano Bernardi and who was violinist i.e. in court musician in Vienna by Emperor Ferdinand II. In 1649, Bertali succeeded Giovanni Valentini as court Kapellmeister. Its very nice that Bertali's compositions is masterpieces of operas, oratorios, a large number of liturgical works, and chamber music. Particularly his operas are notable for establishing the tradition of Italian opera seria in Vienna.
Bertali's Chiacona has a heavenly quality throughout the piece. So many possible variations can stem out from the music to create something as breathtaking as this. Mazel Tov to you and the other musicians! I hope to one day perform this myself!
Beautiful, thank you. Amazing to me was the plucking of both accompanying instruments simulataneously. The left one is a bass and the one on the right a cello ?
They are viols, not (double) bass and 'cello, bass gambe and viola da gamba, a different family. They have frets, and more strings, probably of gut. But they are what the double bass and 'cello replaced as the usual instruments in that register.
The balance seems off; 3 continuo seems overdone given this acoustic. In situ the balance may have been better; sensitive and engaged playing from all.
It is no studio recording, look how the Mikes are placed... 😮, sure a more absorbing medium would have been optimal, less reverb, more space between instruments, an overhead x pair, and a pair for each instruments that would have been the optimal take on a 8 independent track recorder. Overall, I like Rien's style and I like this video for it is vivid and spontaneous.
Thank you all for keeping this music alive!
Une telle musique devrait être obligatoire dans toutes les écoles. Quel bonheur. Un grand merci aux musiciens. Ils sont merveilleux.
i agree classical music should be part of basic education
How wonderful is this nearly forgotten music, still so lively, beautiful, joyous. Bravo to the small and lovely ensemble here.
Overwhelmed. Oh, wonderful.
THE BEYOND EXCELLENT SOUND QUALITY IS AWESOME, SUCH CLEAR TONES

TH-cam lately keeps playing this next after some previous random video. And I can never skip it, makes me happy every time, like a ray of sunshine!
Excellent ! I like the slower tempo much more ! Great job !
I absolutely love listening to the chaconne/canario musical form. Just plain fun to hear!

Parte della sua opera musicale è stata perduta 😢.

Божественно! Пасиб )))
Estasi barocca. Grazie!
8:12 to me is like the soundtrack to a runaway train, something Bertali surely could not have imagined.
Merci beaucoup ♥️
Thanks

What is this bass progression called? I've heard it in multiple compositions.
❤❤
Nice acoustic - where was this recorded?
I agree there´s something wrong with the acoustics. But I was not aware of this composition.

La musica antica è spesso poco conosciuta, purtroppo...
