      Agreed. I think it’s in large to do with the host being familiar with the Chinese culture. I have seen interviews of non-American celebrities conducted by, say, Stephen Colbert, which are really dry and just don’t flow.

    Joe Wong is the REAL HERO. I love the way he helps people to understand culture difference. He's positive. People know too less about China in western world. I realise that many books, videos are way too negative about China that people made decades ago. I appreciate people like Joe Wong could fill the gap in a bright way!

    Love you, Joe Wong. I have felt an outsider in my country. (America) Because I appreciate humor about many people and even cultures. Mostly I enjoy all cultures and especially individuals from many countries.
    Thank you for your courage and mostly your "take" on comedy.
    Some other countries also feel the need to fill quiet moments with something. Like added laughter or other sounds.

    The material is very good, that's a major difference between him and other comedians who rely more on making sounds, gestures, accents and reuse the same old jokes, it just shows the level of the creativeness and intelligence he's at. I mean, Dave Chapel and him are two people that come to mind when it comes to very well written material.
    And someone like Pablo Francisco is someone who relies more on sounds and his personality, while being actually talented and having a flow, still using the same old material, and it just feels like a waste of talent. In stand up you need to have your material on point, it's like the foundation of a building, your construction will be shaky and might fall down without a good foundation.

    The interviewer, like all white people, is sometimes being subtly condescending to him, and stereotyping a bit, and interrupting, too. Interviewers and everyone else are always more respectful towards white people and attractive people. This host is better than most, though. He still seems like a nice guy overall who asks good, intelligent questions.
    China, Chinese people, and Chinese Americans aren't much different from Americans. Don't stereotype, and don't look down on us. I can always tell when dumb comments on TH-cam are made by non-Asians.

      normal for chinese to take western name when out of china since names dont render well esp in latin letters with no diacritics/marks for tone like in pinyin. if you're foreigner in china your also must take an chinese name and chinese students in china take english name in english courses etc the phonetic system is just too different for names you just cant write them in english... so easier to take an english name than taking a english version of a chinese name that will be butchered in english writing haha

    • @ShredST
      @ShredST 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      But they don't make those jokes on national television.

    • @pw399
      @pw399 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Doofus Their national television has no reason to make jokes on political leaders and that wouldn't be funny as in the US, cuz there is no competition on the stage, and any political leader representing the only one party. so they don't have that kind of media culture in decades.
      For me, as a local Chinese, I don't think they should ever bring political leaders to the entertainment area, they better keep on doing their own business seriously for the country or they will get less respects as given the party a frivolous or flighty name.

    • @ShredST
      @ShredST 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unknown Tsai I don't really buy that. Even if the US suddenly becomes a one-party state (though some people would argue that it already is) with everything else being equal, there would still be people making jokes at the government, as long as the politicians keep doing the same thing.
      I don't know anything about the history of 相声, but articles like this www.danwei.org/tv/stifled_laughter_how_the_commu.php suggest that Chinese comedy wasn't always so apolitical, and that its current apolitical nature probably isn't due to the lack of material
      Also, this isn't about political leaders being in entertainment. It's about entertainers themselves making political jokes.

    • @pw399
      @pw399 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Doofus It also depends on the vast of audiences, I don't think the most ppl like my uneducated parents would appreciated that kind of humor. After the ppl who born after 80s or 90s hold the leadership of China, then that situation probably will be changed naturally. You can easily find out the differences of programs between TV media and Internet media in China, the bottom line of the topic between each has a huge distance. that reflecting the facts.
      I believe what you said that "if the US suddenly becomes a one-party state,there would still be people making jokes at the government." It just reminded me that which of my point I have not mentioned. I will read the article later,thx.

    黄西放国内确实不算好的喜剧演员,他讲的包袱也只能放到英文语境里还不错,翻译成中文讲,估计效果要打对折,冷场就难免了。老外的stand up,跟中国的喜剧形式比,最多算是喜剧形式最原始的表现形式,但西方现代文明强势,反而孙子笑话爷爷没幽默感。中国脱口秀的革命这个有点过了,其实中国根本不需要这种原始的喜剧形式。说起幽默,确实能显著看出西方人的智商比较捉急,或至少思维方式差太远。老外的幽默大部分来的直接,更接近滑稽。中国人的幽默,基本都需要把包袱藏起来,让观众自己把包袱找出来自己打开,需要稍微理解一下才能感受到迟来的快感,当然来得也更强烈。黄西骨子里还是中国人的幽默,也正是这种幽默特质让他真的stand out

    China never has the culture of making fun of their leaders, unless it's about one of their ex-presidents.
    They don't mention him by name though. If you're interested, there‘’s a wikipedia page about toad worship.

    I like how the format of this show is a rip off of Charlie Rose and 60 Minutes.
    The Chinese rip everything off.

      Not only that, but according to VICE, they rape infants to "cure" themselves of AIDS, & eat children's hearts as sacrifices. So there are plenty of abominations to go around.
