  • I am actually a bit surprised by how immensely I enjoyed this game and the additions system. In North America, it came out for the Playstation on June 13th of 2000. It's almost inexcusable that I waited this long to experience it.

      if by great you mean the game drops inputs constantly due to a buggy internal frame timer, and you have to sit through 2 minute long cutscenes to get past fodder enemies without wasting all your healing items, sure.

    One thing that I feel like nobody seems to talk about, in terms of the subtlety of the story, is Darts Dragoon spirit. It never shone for him on his own, he was not worthy. It only awoke because of Rose, Ziegs lover. I think that just speaks to their connection. And later on, Dart earns his own the same way the dragoons of old did. Defeating the dragon.

    • @RobertJones-vb2qi
      @RobertJones-vb2qi ปีที่แล้ว

      It didn't awaken for him and I take that not because dart wasnt worthy but he had no clue of what it was and that the dragoon spirit had been suppressed for 11 thousand years by melbu. It was dormant and asleep since no one had drawn upon its power since the dragon campaign and was essentially imprisoned until melbu had left.

    • @EmeraldDragoon
      @EmeraldDragoon ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RobertJones-vb2qi yoo, 2 yrs old comment lets gooooo. But of a long response but i do love this game7
      My main contender against your theory though, is the white silver spirit. It has some similiarities in how the story treats it for a little bit. It too hasnt been used in 11,000 years as shirley cant draw its power as a ghost. It ALSO had another spirit draw its power out. Where they differ though, is that shana was able to draw the power out FOR HERSELF as soon as she touched it. Darts held that thing for 18 years, and it only shone when Rose drawed it out. I suppose we could say that it was dormant and then Dart woke it up, which LED to it being able to pick shana, but still.
      I also like my theory because it allows for the unspoken rule of each spirit (or fate itself) choosing one user per spirit, with Dart being chosen by the divine one. And it opens up some theorys about the bonds between users and how the spirits reflect that, or can be manipulated with those bonds.

    • @ManOutofTime913
      @ManOutofTime913 ปีที่แล้ว

      The stone always shone for him since the first moment he picked it up. He just had no idea what it was or how to use it until Rose forced the transformation on him. As the game shows later with Lloyd and the Divine Dragoon spirit, if you aren't worthy the stone won't shine at all.

    • @EmeraldDragoon
      @EmeraldDragoon ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ManOutofTime913 I disagree. The white light of the stone was not it shining as a dragoon spirit, rather it was a "shiny" stone. From the point Rose awakens it and onward that white light is instead a red glow.
      I don't think one could be chosen by two dragoon spirits/fate, but it has been shown one stone can draw out anothers power, as well as dragoon spirits lending power to people in order to reach their true destination as dictated by Fate (admittedly this is more implied by all the comments of fate bringing the dragoons together). Which, I think is what happened to Dart. Rose drew the power out, and she is very rarely not with Dart in the narrative ever since, and then the stone made its way back to the person it actually chose.
      If it had really chosen Dart, Zieg shouldn't have been able to use it at all much like how Lloyld couldn't use the Divine spirit.

    • @ManOutofTime913
      @ManOutofTime913 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EmeraldDragoon Except we have two separate examples of the stone not visually glowing like it does with Dart. Once with Lloyd and once with the water bottle salesmen who gives you Kongol's spirit. Plus, Rose leaves the party to visit Neet in Disk 3 and Dart has no problems using his powers. That along with Rose saying very directly that Dart has been chosen by the Red-Eye Dragon on multiple occasions tells me that the stone glows white whenever someone with potential touches it and it glows its proper color when its chosen user touches it or when another user draws out its power. That's somewhat supported by the White Silver Spirit as well since it glows a dim white the same as the Red Eye Stone when Dart touches it but it's much brighter with Shana / Miranda or while healing Drake.
      You have an interesting theory, but it's not really supported by the narrative. The game heavily implies that the stones are sentient since they apparently hold the soul of the Dragon that was killed to produce it, so I have no problem with the idea that two stones could choose the same person. Not only that, but I wouldn't put too much stock in the idea of fate considering that the narrative plays with it. Yeah, it's heavily coincidental that the Dragoons are all drawn to each other, which is implied to be driven by fate, but it's also a major plotpoint that the Winglies were actively able to defy fate by sealing the 108th fruit, and the party as well by being able to destroy it. Miranda even has a line about making your own fate before the final boss. Of course, that depends on whether you think that the creator, Soa, actually exists because the game never answers it directly.

    Loved this review. Well done and I agree with pretty much everything you said except for the encounter rate. It even warns you that you are getting into an encounter before you do with the color of the cursor. The encounter rate in virtually all RPG games that came before it was higher. Also an interesting thing about the game is you can buy an accessory that enables you to do auto additions. They are expensive I believe. The first one gives you half damage and half sp and the second one found much later gives you full damage and full sp for people who don't like the button input part. I love the music and art in this game!

    • @nightdrivenen7909
      @nightdrivenen7909 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Expensive is an understatement;
      Ultimate Wargod's Calling is 10,000 gold.
      Even if you spent 5 houra farming up on disc 1 creatures you would barely get Half of that amount. I tried. So while they do exist you would be running around 3/4ths of Disc 1 having to fight theough a system you hated, and then spend an ETERNITY using that system to grind up for 3 of those accessories. By that point you will be so done and spent with the game why would anyone who hated it even continue?

    • @FingerinUrDaughter
      @FingerinUrDaughter 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      they also eliminate addition xp, so your additions never level up. not really a good alternative since fighting any of the last dozen or so bosses with low level attacks is a good way to get fucked.

    • @jus4000kicks
      @jus4000kicks 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nightdrivenen7909 Easiest answer is to buy the less expensive one that gives you half damage and half sp on disc 1 (believe its 1000 gold) and the more expensive one later in the game. That's what I was saying. I mean, I enjoyed the addition system so I never really used those outside of if I really wanted to see how one looked like that I had a lot of trouble to pull off. You could focus on using magic items more and spirit potions for sp. I simply think its interesting they give you the option but I enjoy leveling them up. Another option for people who don't like doing the multiple hit additions is to just stick with a simpler one and level it up.

    • @nightdrivenen7909
      @nightdrivenen7909 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jus4000kicks Well true, the Wargod's amulet is available for people to buy. But with gold being a valuable resource due to its overall low generation; shilling out around 3k for a team (I know you can find some in the world, but if you don't explore it will be 3k) and then to attempt to still grind (which still takes forever even in disc 4, as gold income barely increases At All) for 30k gold, it's simply just not worth it.
      And while half damage and half sp are decent draw backs to avoiding the feature, if someone doesn't know what they are doing; they may be forced to just Git Gud at the addition system. And by that point you save so much time and energy without burning out on the gameplay and story. Again just to grind to 3k in Disc 1 where the Wargod's Amulet exists is still taxing and very tedious no matter where in disc 1 you start at, and you still have to get to Lohan which is 3/4ths of disc 1 as is. It just genuinly seems like its not worth the investment if someone truly hates the addition system.

    • @jus4000kicks
      @jus4000kicks 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nightdrivenen7909 I admit I didn't consider having to buy them for 3 characters. I guess its more viable for a single character. Yeah its not a perfect solution but it does give you options and I like options. Better to focus on simpler additions perhaps. But I've always loved the idea of combining fighting game design mechanics into turn based RPGs so I will always love Legend of Dragoon and Legend of Legaia as a result.

    Like I said before, The Legend Of Dragoon is the best JRPG for newcomers to the genre because it doesn't spoil you or build your standards too high but at the same time it's a game worth playing if you can stomach a 60 hour long slog. If it is your first JRPG, the slog is most definitely worth it because it's a new experience but if you've played a ton of JRPG's I can't say I'd recommend it as easily because it just overstays its welcome for what it offers.
    I'm glad you didn't take either the all out hate/all out praise approach many reviewers took for this game as The Legend Of Dragoon has a lot of major issues but also has a lot of good. That being said, it's either gonna click with you or it isn't and it better click with you because the game is so unbelievably long that it will test your patience.
    As for the combat, you know my thoughts on it, I think it's the weakest part of the game due to the lack of strategic options. This isn't Guitaroo Man, I'm not supposed to be defeating bosses with timed button presses, it's a turn based RPG, I'm supposed to beat bosses with strategy and there's barely enough options to vary your strategy enough for it to be engaging and considering the fact that the game is so ridiculously long, combat just becomes tedious.
    One thing I will say though is that the combat at the very least does work, even if it is bare bones. The only reason why The Legend Of Dragoon is even playable is due to the fact that the defend command actually heals you as opposed to just decreasing damage received, making defending a viable option in combat which isn't usually the case in most games due to the fact that having 1 character defend requires you to get lucky that the enemy targets that specific character or you wasted a turn, that's not the case in The Legend Of Dragoon as defending heals you do it's always a viable option.
    I don't regret playing this game but I don't think I'll ever play it again, it has some of the best pre-rendered environments I've ever seen and a really intriguing world but it is way too freaking long.

      I think some of the late game bosses are too tough for beginners though. When I played Legend of Dragoon for the first time a couple of years ago I had plenty of JRPG experience already and still I found some of the late game bosses to be very challenging.(the Divine Dragon especially).

    • @FelixS.
      @FelixS. 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gonçalo Ferreira Hm there are many JRPGs which give you plenty of strategic options. Xenogears and Xenosaga Ep 1, the PSX Final Fantasys (VII-IX), the Shin Megami Tensei Games (including Persona), Octopath Traveler, Dragon Quest XI with draconic quests activated, the Trails of cold Steel series, Baten Kaitos (and its prequel), Etrian Odyssey, Bravely Default, Chrono Cross and also Final Fantasy XII does give you plenty of strategic options. If you like tactic rpgs I can recommend the Ogre Battle franchise, Final Fantasy Tactics, Fire Emblem and Disgae.

      @@FelixS. Xenogears doesn't really give you a lot of strategic options after the first half of the first disk where buffs and debuffs are sort of viable. After that, you can basically stack the accuracy evasion stat on physical Gears and Ether damage on casters and just spam your strongest attacks. On foot is the same except for stacking speed and ether damage.

    I don't think I've seen anyone else mention it in the comments, but the reason your inventory is so limited is because the Japanese version had a tie-in minigame for a peripheral called the Pocketstation in which you could earn an extra bag to bring your total slots up to 64. NTSC and PAL territories did not receive the Pocketstation, so we had no way of earning the second bag and were stuck with the default for the whole game. Kind of a dick move for a game they were trying to outsell Square with.
    I think you have a fair assessment, though I think you might have gone a bit overboard on towns since they're not really so labrynthine as long as you understand the layout of buildings and follow the arrows for entrances and exits. In my opinion, the biggest issue of this game is that there is an extreme amount of content bloat to try and pad it out through all four disks which isn't really the length it deserves. Basically all of Disk 2 is completely irrelevant to the main plot and most of it could have been cut. I know a lot of it serves to build up your team as a group of heroes, but I think a lot of it could have been integrated into the other disks, and the developers probably realized this two cause a couple hours into Disk 3, the plot goes on fast forward to catch up since so much time was wasted on chasing after bandits and trying and failing to stop a fake princess from stealing a Macguffin. It would have been more justified if that time was used to flesh out the characters, but it really isn't especially Haschel whose plotline doesn't align with his motivations and is basically dropped once the disk is over.
    I also feel like Lloyd suffers lack of character development the most across the entire game. He's the main bad guy until right before the end of Disk 3, and we know basically nothing about him or his motivations. I mean, we know what his goal is, but unless I'm forgetting something, we are never shown or told why he wants to accomplish it. Considering all of the terrible things he does throughout the game, the people he sacrifices, and the game's attempt to redeem him, his backstory is something we kind of needed to know. I mean, after what he does in Disk 1, the player and characters are already set up to hate this guy. While the characters come around on him a bit, I don't think the player is given a reason to want or care for him to be redeemed. Also Lloyd (or even worse "Roid" in the original Japanese) is just kind of a silly name.
    Going along with the content bloat, I feel like more time and money should have been invested in game design cause this game has major problems. You brought up the major ones in that in order to use any magic you basically have to limit break, and animations take way too long to be unskippable. However there's a host of other, minor issues. Game balance is a huge problem. There's so little equipment in this game and the number gain on it is extremely gradual, which makes you extremely vulnerable at a lot of points, and then there's multiple stores that sell god equipment that double or even triple your stats to the point where you're completely invincible even against the final boss. Healing items are also really broken, giving you a 50% heal on the weakest and cheapest item which means there's not really a progression of healing items. Combined the lack of good equipment, this makes a ton of the chests completely worthless especially if you're building heavily into physical damage which scales a lot higher than magic and is easier to use and has no limit through MP or inventory. A lot of dungeon exploration can feel like a complete waste of time or just monetary fuel for the strongest equipment which isn't exactly a good feeling.
    There's also the matter of Shana. I know rigging up the complex animations for the additions must have been difficult with the technology available in 1999, but the lack of additions or even just attack power for Shana really kills a lot of the reason to use her. I know her function is supposed to be a healer and caster but considering the only way to raise Dragoon levels is through gaining SP, attack items are limited thanks to the inventory slots, there are other characters who can heal just as well as she can and have higher attack power, and her defense is awful which almost guarantees her to get killed first in encounters with strong physical stats there's just not enough motivation for any player to use her outside of the absurd speedrun tactics where you just run from every encounter and spam items to win forever.
    Much as I have a fondness and a nostalgia for this game since I played it so much in my youth, I'll admit that it is genuinely hard to go back to and it could use a remake or at least an enhanced remaster with a better translation since it becomes as incomprehensible as NES RPGs at times with less of an excuse.

    Tbh it was the lore and world that hooked me on this game. Too many people focus on the mechanics (which aren't that bad for their time)
    And you hold them to modern day mechanics, especially because so few games had anything like that back then.
    The graphics, again for their time, blew me away as a child, and I grew up with the lore and strategy guides, the online fan fics etc.
    Me and my friends would run around with sticks pretending to fight the winglies.
    Once you get passed the superficial dated stuff, it truly is a game worth the love.

    I once used Shana and Miranda all the way through and if you take the time to get their dragoon levels up their worth it, even more so if you have the mana regen item on her. One thing that does kinda stink was no additions and during the tournament it even showed something special with bows, there is a special bow that kinda makes up for it, but they give it to you super late into the last disk, and so becomes less useful. As for the items, I don't see an issue with te number of item slots, but they should have made items stack 5x, that alone would make a major difference, it wouldn't give you limitless items to item spam your way to every victory, but the lack of room makes everything feel hard pressed if you ran into a enemy who could status, or even instant kill you, forcing you to go BACK to town to get healed. And one final thing, I kinda agree with the addition swapping in battle, but shouldn't be free, maybe make it where after blocking you get the option to swap additions or something like that, otherwise there would be no point in having the option to change it out of battle and remove that element of strategy.

    I LOVE this game so much! When I was a kid, the dragoon forms were the coolest thing I had ever seen, and I would rewatch the dragoon magic attacks and transformations over and over. I remember absolutely loving Albert, Kongol, and one of my first favorite female video game characters/crushes Rose. Nowadays, as an adult when I replay the game, I tend to use all characters fairly equally and have grown fond of all of them, even if Shana/Miranda is a tad underpowered.
    I remember feeling like Lloyd was one of the coolest villains at the time, as I was kind of too young to see how much he was ripping off Sephiroth, but.....even after learning of the many connections between them, I still find his character to be very interesting throughout the story, especially the way the game handles him and the wingly race as a whole. The history of the world, and the Virages were very well done, and the connection between the Black Monster and the Moon Child was a pretty neat touch as well.
    However, something that I felt this game did better than most other rpg titles like it where there were multiple discs was how each disc to me.....felt like it's own complete story, that still fit together very well. Each disc was a huge grand story that could be it's own game by itself. With each disc working towards completing an overall goal for the disc story....while also moving the party towards learning more about the history of dragoons, dragons, winglys, and the world as a whole.
    Truly, this game deserves a remake more than any others in my mind. Personally, I'm not sure what kind of remake I would like though. I loved this story so much that seeing it remastered with simply better graphics and some tweaks to improve areas of the gamplay would be awesome! A sequel with roughly the same cast would be pretty enticing as well. As would a prequel showing the was 11,000 years ago. Or perhaps even a brand new story with an entirely new cast completely unrelated to all of the events and characters of the original game. Not sure what is most appealing, but it's a crime that this verse has never been revisited in ANY capacity

    During the lockdown I fired up my old PS2 and got ready to play Legend of Dragoon. Made it to the boss battle at the end of disc 2. Beat him, then the screen goes black and never comes back to gameplay. My disc is too scratched from being 20+ years old and I can not tell you how upsetting that was.

    This was one amazing game indeed! The combat was superb and not too difficult to master it at all. The characters and story did captivated me, and it well worth the ride. The game was on the easy side though, and that's fine with me. I've only died twice in the whole game. I never found the game complicated, and I never thought the encounter rate was high at all. It was very well balanced. I highly recommend this game to anybody that hasn't played it.

    I'd say I replay this game at least once every two years, I only played on an emulator now because I have to have that fast forward mode. I fast forward through the battle loading and enemy attacks oh and the magic attacks. With that there it makes everything tolerable because I just don't have the patience to sit through all the crap in that game anymore because I've already seen it 15 + times

    this game was the gate way to JRPGs for me and for that, its my favorite game of all time. I blame the video games critics for giving LoD a bad rep with the average Joe. We already know how shallow they can get at today's standards, imagine back then where they had much more power due to limited access for regular users. The metacritic for LoD basically speaks it all. A 7 with critics while a 9 with users.

    It's funny, I love other turn-based RPGs with timing based attacks like Lost Odyssey and Shadow Hearts: Covenant, but I just cannot get into this game. Have attempted to play it on 3 separate occasions and do not enjoy it at all. I didn't play long enough for the inventory limit to be a problem, but it really would have ticked me off.

    • @ManOutofTime913
      @ManOutofTime913 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's fair. In the case of Shadow Hearts, the timing is a lot easier to get a hang of since you only need to hit within a certain zone. In Dragoon, the timing is very tight for each hit and you really have to develop a muscle memory for it, and you must be able to deal with the counterattacks which can through off that memory. It's satisfying if you're into that sort of thing, but it's not for everyone.

    i guess the biggest inspiration for this was FF7 but i also see some of chrono cross in the way you only lv up with boss battles. The limitation on the use of magic also makes me think of ff8 as you wouldn´t be using it most time and so normal attack is all you use.
    If i remember correctely the game was very expensive and Sony had high expectations for it. It probably came out too late (2000? and never released in my country, i believe) as the ps2 was already a thing in Japan. In a way it suffered a similar faith as Vagrant Story, one of my favourites.
    Curiously by the time the game was eventually released Square had put out ff8 and ff9. Square was a machine in the 90´s.

    jk obviously. Glad to see you enjoyed this one! I know what you mean by having it recommended by a bunch of people - this is such a cult classic, so many people seem to love the hell out of it. I had an N64 back in the day, so the amount of PSX titles I've checked out since is somewhat limited and Legend of Dragoon is one I'm just not getting to. I keep kind of holding out hope that it'll just get remade at some point - there seems to be a lot of fan demand for it, and hell, rumors pointed out that Bluepoint may have even been working on a remake for PS5 before those rumors locked down that no, they were remaking Demon's Souls (Which turned out to be true). Still, I feel like Sony Japan's got their eyes on this, so they'll do something with it eventually. Hopefully they'll iron out some of the issues it has too when that day (maybe) comes. Otherwise.... I guess I'll play it when I'm retired :P

    been seeing alot about this game lately, just 100%d it in the last two weeks. I'll say that most reviews ive seen havent been dicking around with team comps and builds as it were. Like soul eater therapy ring dart, or dancers shoes dancers ring meru, or that for kongel to be usable you needed the bandits shoes for that extra agility. Its just a bunch of FF7 fanbois calling it derivative and barely scratching the surface of the experience. It feels dope when you get the additions down, hitting that perky step every time, and the fact that using your moves makes them stronger and getting more sp raises your dlvl like it feeds back into that reward loop of getting the execution, unlocking new additions and getting more spells. I must note that some additions are gained based on your current level. I beat this game as a youngin and what brings me back is the addition system. the way you can grind to dlvl 5 on disc one, and how fun it is to use different team comps. The game is not without its jank and the translations were bad sure, but this game for me is nothing short of a 10/10. As a fanboy it wouldve been doooooope to have seen a prequel taking place in the dragon campaign. They dont realize how much motherfucking money they could make with first a remake then some kind of follow up or maybe just some extra bosses or scrapped content thrown into it or something. I would kiss everyone at sony on the mouth if they made some moves on dragoon. and thats my word. Great video I subbed

    i've been surprised lately to find out that LoD has been compared and was said to be derivative to FFVII. i couldn't see that back then, and 2 months ago after finishing it for the first time still couldn't see it. main char death? oh please, the first time i played FFVII i never used Aerith so when she died i was like... okay. Lavitz is likeable and you were able to spend some time with. silver-haired antagonist? not even close. i agree with your review. it's not perfect, but its flaws are very well a part of its charm to make it soooo good. i really hope that LoD remake will be a thing in the future.

    Id be excited to see this remastered with added abyss dragon content..abyssal spirit used by rose after finale boss content and heavenly dragon content...spirit used by shana 🤷‍♂️ my favorite team for end games rose and shana have healing capabilities but need a strength upgrade...and both contents should be playable before the final fight.....🤷‍♂️ honestly though it should be optional to fight them and they should be harder than the final boss....alternate spirit should also be added and optional if you max out spirit levels...and the abbys and heavenly dragons should appear is shana and rose have maxed out dragoon levels...and as a dlc a story line played by lloyd to fully get his story 🤷‍♂️ he was a badass so I'd like to play his story from start to finish 100% needs to be remastered the game itself on ps1 gets my stamp of approval...also i didn't listen to anything you said on the video spent the entire thing giving my opinion...hopefully you gave a good review

    I tried this game 4 times and each time I got to the early mine cave work pen jail whatever dungeon and stopped. The dungeons have just such an awful layout and organization and shape. Just unfun chores with no interesting elements at all, just "busy" ones. Prerendered backdrops that loop around on themselves and fit into each other in exhausting ways that are just unpleasant to mentally organize just for the sake of having them. Saga frontier and ff7 used them far better and within their limitations.
    I saw some late game play. Will someone explain the metaphor and allegory in the birth canal black hole attack, or does that take 50 hours of narrative to really understand?
