  • Jimmy James, Eli Woods and Roy Castle perform The Box Sketch on The Roy Castle Show in 1961.
Dad worked a lot with Jimmy James over the years and this is the most famous routine they did. I wish there was more footage of them performing together. They are various versions of this sketch, some of them with Jimmy's son James Casey after Jimmy died. This version was taken from The Roy Castle Show which went out live in 1961.
Only two episodes of The Roy Castle Show are still in existence to my knowledge, as they were live and were either never recorded or they were recorded over. I know the amount of work that would have gone into each sketch. Maybe one day someone will find more in a vault somewhere.

Absolutely brilliant! So good to see and hear hilarious comedy without any foul language! This sketch should be used as a teaching aid for budding comedians!

Brightened up my Saturday morning. Forgotten how funny these three were. God knows we need a laugh today.

Wonderful, pure joy of English music hall, and Eli is the icing on the cake.

My lasting memories of Eli Woods was performing on stage with Hilda Baker. Brilliant comedy and timing.

This is the one I saw first in ‘61…I knew I was only little and thought it very funny….not so little now and it’s still funny.

Yes, I've watched various versions of this sketch so many times and remember seeing him recreate quite a bit, but I still find it funny. I wish I could find more of the sketches.

In the days when 'Gormless' meant harmless comedy..not easily offended snowflake reaction...this sketch is timeless and offends no one taken for what it is....inoffensive banter without rancour or a desire to hurt

Who says 'gormless' is offensive? Sounds like you're the 'snowflake'.

When I was a kid about 12 or 13, I was in Yarm Road Stockton on Tees, my home town with my mother, when Jimmy James walked casually by arem in arm with his wife.
Roy castle robbed of his life by lung cancer, never smoked anything in his life. Too many years playing to audiences in smoky working men's clubs and theaters. Eli had some little TV work following the death of Jimmy. But he was out of his depth. I don't know what happened to him when the work dried up.

There is a bit of Roy Jimmy and Eli on YT, the reprise of this on Parkinson (ITV) and The Stooges Act.

Great comedy which sadly in this day of Wokeism and PC we will never see again.

'Sadly'? Is it sad that we no longer make people with learning disabilities the butt of pathetic jokes?

Old fashioned English humour from a bygone era !
    No alternative "comedy" then !

When comedy was comedy, it's all sophisticated rubbish now.

I don't know about the sophisticated but I'd agree with the rubbish! I've watched the Apollo productions several times and I just don't understand how these people can justify calling themselves comedians, I rate them as bloody awful.
