The Entertainer featuring Roy Castle with Ben Castle and the Blah Street Band
Roy Castle joins Ben Castle and the Blah Street Band for an electronic big band romp through Scott Joplin's 'The Entertainer'
I was very lucky to have performed and collaborated with my dad on many occasions, and I learnt so much from him, but I was only 20 when he died, so my own musical journey was only just beginning. If I could have one very selfish wish, it would be to do a collaborative project with him now that I'm a bit older. I think we'd make something really special together.
The Blah Street Band and I were looking for a rhythmic solo element for The Entertainer and decided to feature some of his tap-dancing from a bootleg cassette I'd found of one of his gigs that was recorded before I was born. We also used the sound of the audience laughing at his routine, a snippet of his trumpet playing, and got him to count in the final section.
The Entertainer is taken from 'An EP' by Ben Castle and the Blah Street Band, which also includes guest appearances from Matt Berry and Beth Rowley. You can listen here:

Beth Rowley with Ben Castle and the Blah Street - Let's Face the Music and Dance
มุมมอง 36Kปีที่แล้ว
@bethrowleymusic joins Ben Castle and the Blah Street for a Quentin Tarantino / Ennio Morricone inspired version of the Irving Berlin classic Jazz standard, 'Let's Face the Music and Dance'. For rights reasons, part of the video had to be chopped out, so there is a very clunky edit about half way through. Do accept our apologies for the barbaric cut that happens. We do so hope it doesn't spoil...

Drum routine from The Roy Castle Show in 1961
มุมมอง 10K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Drum routine with Roy Castle, Phil Seamen, Jack Parnell, Kenny Clare and Art Morgan from The Roy Castle Show. Dad was in his element playing music and loved showcasing his favourite musicians. These were the top jazz drummers in the UK at the time and dad was in awe of them all. It was a live TV show and, not long before transmission, Phil Seamen, who was the one everyone revered, was nowhere t...
Mel Tormé and Roy Castle - Let's Call the Whole Thing Off
มุมมอง 2932 ปีที่แล้ว
Mel Tormé was dad's favourite singer, so it was a buzz for him to get to sing a duet with him. Mel was also a fan of dad's and they ended up being great friends. This version of Let's Call the Whole Thing Off is from The Garry Moore Show. Sadly, there doesn't seem to be footage left of the encounter, but I'm glad the audio remains. They also recreated it on Mel's UK radio special.
Jimmy James, Eli Woods and Roy Castle - The Box Sketch

Jimmy James, Eli Woods and Roy Castle perform The Box Sketch on The Roy Castle Show in 1961. Dad worked a lot with Jimmy James over the years and this is the most famous routine they did. I wish there was more footage of them performing together. They are various versions of this sketch, some of them with Jimmy's son James Casey after Jimmy died. This version was taken from The Roy Castle Show ...
Una Stubbs perform The Sweetest Sounds on The Roy Castle Show in 1964
มุมมอง 3.9K2 ปีที่แล้ว
I'm putting up some videos of dad today to celebrate his 90th Birthday. The wonderful Una Stubbs plays the violin and dances with dad in this rendition of Richard Rogers' The Sweetest Sounds. In the show, the conductor Harry Rabinowitz had just fainted after finding out it was a live tv show, so dad had to take over at the baton.
Happy Feet from The Roy Castle Show 1964

I'm putting up some videos of dad today to celebrate his 90th Birthday. This is his dance routine for Happy Feet, which is from the album 'Garry Moore presents Roy Castle', produced by Sonny Burke for Reprise Records. He was signed to Reprise by Frank Sinatra, but it was the wrong time to be making crooner music as it had been overtaken by rock and roll, but the album is beautiful. I actually p...

I'm putting up some videos of dad today to celebrate his 90th Birthday. Dad was a regular guest on the Garry Moore show in the early 1960s. He got to work with a lot of his heroes over this time. I wish there was more footage of him on the show. I have a recording of him singing with Mel Tormé and I know he was often on there with Sarah Vaughan and Nat King Cole as well as comedy legends such a...
Bernard Cribbins on The Roy Castle Show in 1964

I'm putting up some videos of Dad today to celebrate his 90th Birthday. Here is his good mate Bernard Cribbins appearing on The Roy Castle Show in 1964. They loved any opportunity to work together. Bernard actually did the narration for the audiobook of Dad's Autobiography, as Dad was too ill to do it himself.

Loved to see all these talents play Trixon drums - made in my hometown Hamburg/Germany. The company did'nt survive the 60s and one of the endorsers was fabulous Phil Seaman
Very freaking cool!! Sounds excellent!!
Just to add to my earlier comment about Roy Castle, he came into the Budgen supermarket in Station road in Gerrards Cross where I was working at the time in December 1986, at a time when there was a lot of snow. As he entered the store I was by the entrance where I was refilling a shelf, & I had my back to him, & I heard him say to me - 'when are they bringing the dinghies in?' He made the comment because all of the previous customers had come in leaving a pool of melted snow on the shop floor, but I think that it was typical of him, as said before, despite his fame, he was very down to earth & he would chat to the public.
Haha! Thanks Joseph. I remember that Budgens.
Absolutely knockout!
how cool
Imagine Roy Castle and Bill Bailey together . A two man orchestra.
I would love to see that!
Really well done! Amazing performance!
Roy was a great drummer as well.
Magic.
Bravo!😂
the 2 stars of the Dr Who Movies together......
BOTH DIED TO WAY EARLY THANKS FOR POSTING THIS , WHAT TALENT AMAZING R I P BOTH
Whist I don’t subscribe to the three score and ten school of thought , and dislike the phrase “he had a good innings”. The wonderful Bernard Cribbins was 93 when he died, so maybe saying he was “to early” is a bit of a stretch in his case…
Perfection
This was super fun and creative :)
Old fashioned English humour from a bygone era ! No alternative "comedy" then !
Two late greats on top form .
Great clip! Thank you, Ben! NZ
Thank you for watching!
Gonna build a mountain Least I hope I will Gonna build a mountain Gonna build it high I don't know how I'm gonna do it I only know I'm gonna try Gonna build a daydream From a little hope Gonna push that daydream Up the mountain slope Gonna build a daydream Gonna see it through Gonna build a mountain and a daydream Gonna make 'em both come true Gonna build a heaven From a little hell Gonna build a heaven And I know darned well If I build my mountain With a lot of care And take my daydream up the mountain Heaven will be
How can a man display such a high level of coordination in tap dancing yet have absolutely no rhythm while dancing?
Thanks for your question. I don’t know the answer I’m afraid but I’ll ask him the next time I see him.
Fabulous
Thank you!
wow...the year I was born! God, we had some talent back then! Two amazing blokes who seemed to be part of my life: Roy was just fun and Bernard for me, WAS Jackanory and helped me with loving books! What happened to guys like this...where are the modern equivalents! Both men could seemingly 'Do' Anything : Sing, Dance, Act.... marvelous memories for which I am grateful to both these awesome men.
Thank you for watching.
Brilliant
So entertaining and more importantly, completely accurate.
Brilliant! My Dad was a drummer and he'd have loved this!
I didn't know that Aunt Sally could play the violin! What would Worzel Gummidge have thought? Roy Castle, Terpsichore's Muse and stand-in Maestro: what a talented man. His demise was tragically premature.
I was twenty at the time, three years older than Ben, and remember both Roy and Bruce when growing up. Especially the Record Breakers and the Generation Game. Now in my early fifties!
❤
Awesome
❤
Love this, so many childhood memories watching.
Young Disciples!
Truly awesome performance by the three of them 👏🏻
That's very kind, thank you.
Two legends! Bril! Nuff said.🙂
My goodness watching this clip from the Roy Castle show, makes you realise what great talents we have lost!
That rostrum’s bigger on the inside.
Brilliant! Loved Bernard!
Its so good to see this amazing piece. Happy days.
Wonderful talent
I used to live in Gerrards Cross, & I saw Roy Castle a few times & he was not at all show bizzy, he was just like anyone else, very down to earth.
Brilliant! Two marvellous entertainers. I enjoyed watching them in my childhood.
My goodness! 91. Well here's wishing a Happy Birthday to your dear dad, and honestly I think you HAVE just had your wish, because this collaboration, albeit posthumously done, is fantastic, and he would have loved every second! Bravo to you and the band ❤👍🎵🎷🎺 Helen x
Ahh, thanks so much Helen, that's lovely.
Brilliant, he would have loved this.
Thanks Julian. I hope so.
With all his many other talents on show, I think Roy is underrated as a straight singer. That's a pretty fine baritone and a heartfelt performance. Una Stubbs is pretty good too.
Thank you. He actually considered himself first and foremost a singer, but not many people realised that, as he did so many things. I put some of his albums on Soundcloud a few years ago for people to hear them, as they're difficult to find elsewhere.
@@BenCastleTV Thx for that. I'm enjoying your channel, btw.
@@unclenogbad1509 I appreciate that. Thank you for watching!
This is the one I saw first in ‘61…I knew I was only little and thought it very funny….not so little now and it’s still funny.
Yes, I've watched various versions of this sketch so many times and remember seeing him recreate quite a bit, but I still find it funny. I wish I could find more of the sketches.
One of the nicest celebrities I met in my youth was Roy... a man who literally lived & breathed "Dedication". Continued success Ben, and thanks for posting these permanent reminders of a one-off performer.
Ahh, thanks so much. I appreciate that.
Thank you for posting. I feel privileged to be able to watch it.
As Jack Regan might've said: Well - I - Never !
😂😂
Hi Ben, My mother worked with your Dad a lot in the early days. Her name is June Sadler nee Barnes. She is not so good at the moment, but was saying about a routine your Dad did with Bruce Forsyth in the sixties on Sunday Night at the London Palladium which was brilliant. You don’t have a clip at all of it by any chance? Regards to your Mum and of course you, Michael Sadler.
Hello Michael. Thanks so much for getting in touch. I'm sorry to hear your mother isn't doing well at the moment. The only clip I know of from back then is this one that someone posted on Facebook: facebook.com/watch/?v=459349039240776 . I'm not sure if it was from the Palladium or not. Please send your mother love from me and my family. All the best, Ben
@@BenCastleTV thanks Ben. Will do.
Hi, I showed Mum the clip when I visited her in hospital yesterday, and she got quite emotional. She was saying that it’s the best part of 70 years since they first worked together for Mildred Crossley in ‘ Happiness Ahead’. Your Dad was a genius. She said to say thank you for your kind words. Take care and all the best, Michael
@@michaelsadler7332 ahh, that’s lovely. I’m so glad she enjoyed it. I wish there was some footage of Happiness Ahead. It sounded like it was all so much fun.
