  • Crystal Mountain was greatly improved with Boyne Resorts, which purchased them in 1997, after they were running out of money. Chinook to Forest Queen provided a strong way into Campbell Basin, and Chinook to Rainier provided a strong way to The Summit. Though, Boyne decided the Summit could use more capacity, as Rainier Express was the only way to Green Valley, and the new expansion as part of the same plan a new lift was a part of. This new lift was originally planned as an aerial tramway, but ended up being a gondola. Installed in 2010, this lift, named Mt. Rainier Gondola was an incredible addition to Crystal Mountain's lift system, and gives a good capacity boost to the northern part of the resort.
Mt. Rainier Gondola is a Doppelmayr eight passenger gondola. It uses CWA Omega IV LWI cabins, UNI-G terminals, DT-108 grips, and the stronger type of North American style lifting frames. As well as being a great lift for skiers and riders, this lift also operates in the summer for sightseers and hikers. It accesses the Summit House Restaurant, and hiking trails. The design speed is only a little over 800 FPM, due to the short length UNI-G terminals, which there were space constraints for at The Summit. The capacity boost isn't too much, with 900 PPH brought to The Summit by this lift, which leaves just 15 towers and 36 cabins. But what this lift lacks in speed and hourly capacity, it makes up with length and vertical. 6,911 feet in length with 2457 feet of vertical, Mt. Rainier Gondola is the longest and highest vertical lift in Washington! Even for the non skier/rider, this lift is a treat for anyone to take a scenic ride up this incredible vertical.
The recording of this is during Crystal Mountain's bonus terrain skiing on Memorial Day weekend, being one of the last of Crystal Mountain's skiing/riding operations. The only lift open with terrain to ski was Green Valley Express, and the snow coverage is quite good for the late spring skiing, as it softens up in the 70° weather.

I was there on memorial day in 2022, almost exactly one year after this was taken.

Nice! It was a great day up there today.
Are you planning to do video of the lifts at Timberline this summer?

Yes it was! So many people wearing crazy clothing. I was just in black sweatpants and T-shirt.
Yes, I may be going to Timberline in a few weeks in mid-late June. Nobody's filmed Palmer, which would be great to have a POV of.

@@sorenjones If you’re there after June 11th, you can also snag the Lower and Upper Bowl lifts at Mt. Hood Ski Bowl. They do scenic rides/mountain biking in the summer.
