Tanaka Sensei is still nowadays a reference in Kumite for me. As a JKA karate black belt student I always like to watch his videos. Tanaka Sensei is currently a high level instructor at the JKA (Japanese Karate Association) Hombu Dojo in Tokyo. His major tournament success: 3rd IAKF World Karate Championship (Bremen, 1980) - 1st Place Group Kumite 2nd IAKF World Karate Championship (Tokyo, 1977) - 1st Place Kumite 1st IAKF World Karate Championship (Los Angeles, 1975) - 1st Place Kumite 18th JKA All Japan Karate Championship (1975) - 1st Place Kumite 17th JKA All Japan Karate Championship (1974) - 1st Place Kumite 16th JKA All Japan Karate Championship (1973) - 3rd Place Kumite

I used to train in a form of Okinawan-style karate called Mushindo, back in the late 60's/70's under the late Terry Dukes (Rev. Nagaboshi) in the Kennington area of London. Some wonderful memories.
It looks like a variation of a Chudan Mawashi Uke. Double tap, open handed, just deflecting the foot enough to miss. It's hard to tell from the angle given.
@koi891 not so sure about it actually.. if you are well trained like him and you really hit the enemy then i am pretty sure you would be able to fend off the enemy
@acerwk You still not understanding. Obviously Machida uses double legs, low kicks, etc. because que is a MMA-FIGHTER, so he NEEDS to have a large number of techniques. But what fighter doesn't? And if you say that he doesn't use shotokan, than you don't watch his fights, or you don't know nothing about shotokan. Fighting isn't just about the kind of punches, but the use of the hips, the footwork, Timming, Tai Sabaki (avoidance), etc.
He is using a mid-level (chudan) block to deflect the incoming kick, but it’s aimed at clearing space for his own kick which is almost immediate. This means he is attacking into his opponent’s attack, rather than doing a separate full block followed by a separate counter attack. He’s anticipating and moving into the attack with an attack. This allows for greater speed and it keeps the energy of attack moving forward to the opponent. Were he to move back, block and then try to move forward, the energy would have been lost along the way.
@Yautja297 Agreed. In real street combat the master might not kick that high anyway. He's only kicking this high in this video as a display of skill and flexibility.
Well, Tanaka has nothing to do those guys you spared with. No disrespect, but in a full contacta fighting you wouldn't last 1 minute against a fighting beast as Tanaka. If you even got to grapling distance, he would knock your head off. Ground fighting wouldn't be the nice way to go if you ever got the chance to fight someone like Tanaka. I'm both 1st dan in Judo and Karate.
the point of the original ufc was to see what is the best martial art in a one on one competitive environment and jujitsu came out on top. karate isn't designed for sport fighting like in mma and the grappling arts. katas start by blocking to the left and right because karateka train to fight defensively against multiple attackers in the street. grappling of course is not very effective against multiple opponents. it really is not even possible to compare karate and grappling arts
@acerwk Lyoto's father, Machida sensei, was mmmmm challenged?? (I don´t have a good english) for many figthers.... A small japanese alone in Brasil trying to teaching Karate... many big figthers came... no one wins. And ask Machida sensei who is Masahiko Tanaka... he would say... "the strongest man i know" again... sorry for my english...
@acerwk Lyoto doesn't "change"... Lyoto use Shotokan and other styles... If you study seriusly for some years one real marcial art, you will understand things that now is absolutely impossible to do. One, for example... no one marcial art is better than other... one more... You can`t to say this is weak for rules in a tournament... the rules are cause if you don´t have rules is more than danger... the rules was intoduced because was impossible to think in a combat with no one dad.
@acerwk tell me ONE fighter in MMA who pratice only one martial arts. ONE! There is someone like that? NO! So whats the problem with Machida praticing BJJ and cross training?
@Motmaitre did karate for 25 years (with the bowing) then after 25, I realised this is nothing more that theatre and if your culture involves theatrical bowing then good luck but I got sick of the pretension before knocking someones head off. The pretension of peace, the meditation the zen, all good..... but lets train to seriously hurt people ....yeah that sounds logical...No offence
@Motmaitre Learnt plenty you spoon split blood bought into this idiocy here is a quote from you read it out loud and see how it sounds ' peace and meditation are NOT incompatible with fighting' ...thats it in a nutshell. YOU are wasting your life my friend buying into this pretenscious bull crap. I woke up and saw it for what it is part of mans love of ceremony. I also trained in japan and fought Japanese. trues warriors they are but. the feigned manners are pretence. It an opinion, suck it up.
@acerwk wake up... I don`t care if you believe to me or not... I don´t care... I listen that of Machida sensei in person, and I believe him... now... you don´t know.. you don´t have idea about Shotokan JKA Karate... and... the best, when you don´t konw about something... is to say nothing.
@acerwk OK acerwk... I'm impress with your inteligence... You are in USA? I don´t know a JKA good Karateka in there... but one time in the year, Tanaka sensei and some students and others masters.... go to Canada... If you can, go... and ask him a combat whit no rules... He is 70 years old... and I think He will don´t to say no... If you come to Chile... I know many good Shotokan students... but... I don´t recomend you... cuase you are weaker. Bye
Have fought many Tae Kwon Do in Tournaments they offer no competition, just too predictable, rarely do they get past 1st bout in Karate Tournaments and never win one ~ If they competed in the Olympics against a Karate opponent they would be annihilated ~ Karate has use of 4 weapons hands & feet TaeKwonDo has just 2 feet
Jiu jitsus garbage against multiple opponents on the street. And Muay Thai comes straight forward ..to predictable..yeah good luck choking somebody out in the street while his friend stomps your head into a puddle..karate sucks? Really ask George stpierre and Lyotta machida if karate sucks..
Good instructional video on some of Tanaka's kumite ideas. Thanks for making this available.
He was the best. I used his stuff so much. Got 5 Grand Champion Tournament because of him.

This is correct. Someone once told me that practice is 100% effort and practical application is 10%.
Great
I have met Tanaka on training camp in Finland.
Qual o nível de graduação do mestre Tanaka
Me gusta mucho su trabajo maestro
Holy crap! That was a solid front kick!
I used to train in a form of Okinawan-style karate called Mushindo, back in the late 60's/70's under the late Terry Dukes (Rev. Nagaboshi) in the Kennington area of London. Some wonderful memories.
@acerwk A great dance indeed. Ask Machida and Silva's dance partners how much they enjoyed dancing. Pure Shotokan from the kata Kanku Dai.
It looks like a variation of a Chudan Mawashi Uke. Double tap, open handed, just deflecting the foot enough to miss. It's hard to tell from the angle given.
@acerwk yes, he does. Pure? obviously not, but he main martial art is shotokan.
Super
Actually if you do your homework, ITF TKD is kinda like Shotokan Karate, not the other way around ;)
nice kicks. good basics.
😂😂😂
Good Technique.
@koi891 not so sure about it actually.. if you are well trained like him and you really hit the enemy then i am pretty sure you would be able to fend off the enemy
@acerwk
You really don't konw about Karate...
Machida's Father... is a good sensei of Karate, and his professor is sensei Masahiko Tanaka...
@acerwk You still not understanding. Obviously Machida uses double legs, low kicks, etc. because que is a MMA-FIGHTER, so he NEEDS to have a large number of techniques. But what fighter doesn't?

cant hate japanese training
Does any know if for the first technique "Hikikomi & Mae-Geri" does he use a lower block? or is he performing another technique?.
Thank you =].
He is using a mid-level (chudan) block to deflect the incoming kick, but it’s aimed at clearing space for his own kick which is almost immediate. 太實用了!
What DVD is this from? Such a fan of Tanaka.
That's cause from shotokan came ITF TKD with out the sweeps and stuff .
@Yautja297

Why it's over i see no execution to the move.

again... sorry for my english...
Perhaps it is true. Karate is a filosofia.Un trained karateka is able to defend themselves if attacked.
@acerwk Lyoto doesn't "change"... Lyoto use Shotokan and other styles...

simple but very effective try it and see for you're self and you can say i like karate. osu....
can we cut with the theatrical bowing ffs ?
@Motmaitre did karate for 25 years (with the bowing) then after 25, I realised this is nothing more that theatre and if your culture involves theatrical bowing then good luck but I got sick of the pretension before knocking someones head off. I gave it a dislike. But I meant to press the like button
