I don't think the line about the 9 is really a mood killer. The tone is a little ambiguous and the "right..." really sounds like something awkward just happened. But it also perfectly fits if Benny's line is more of a "and just think of how much has changed" point. When I do that, I can imagine that she keeps that sad smile the whole time and it doesn't feel as jarring when she starts up again as if the mood hadn't been killed
