Are You a Highly Sensitive Person? | Kati Morton

  • There are many online tests you can take to find out if you are an HSP or not, and I am sure many of these are helpful and accurate, however, there isn’t a tried and true test or assessment that mental health professionals use. Just wanted to throw that out there. Also, after reading about the HSP, I realized how negatively we view the word “sensitive” when it can actually be a very positive and helpful quality. So just pay attention to how you view that word and how you use it in your life. And if using the term “highly sensitive person” is bothersome to you, feel free to make it your own.. You could call it “highly intuitive person” maybe. Whatever works for you. Oh, and also know that HSP is not the same as Sensory Processing Disorder, some scientists call HSP “Sensory Processing Sensitivity” but know that sensory overload is merely one part of HSP.

    It's so incorrect for people to think that sensitive people are weak. It's the opposite. We are strong because we process and digest so much more than others and we are still living in this world

    • @thisisntallowed9560
      @thisisntallowed9560 4 ปีที่แล้ว +71

      People think that to be strong, you have to hide your emotions. It's harder for HPS to hide emotions. But what they don't understand, is that anger is also something they express well. They can say their opinion, and since they read people well, they know where to push. But they usually will use this ability to do good, because they care about people.
      I think being strong is not related to being HPS or not. It's only related to if you're confident or not. People who aren't confident with crying, judge HPS who are confident with crying, or admire it. Crying makes you stronger, I learned that.

      Very true. Lots of admirable traits are seen as weakness though, I think thats just lack of understanding and naiveness. I prefer not to label it as a strength or weakness, much like I don't feel like being a HSP is a gift or curse. If I had the choice I would accept being a HSP and consider it advantageous in many ways BUT it's also often emotionally, mentally, physically exhausting and overwhelming, especially around particular people, in certain situations or environments.
      Being a HSP or an empath can make some jobs very difficult or virtually impossible as well as detrimental/damaging personally.
      I have found being aware and discovering your a HSP and/or empath makes it 1000% more easy to operate at a moderately tolerable level, especially if we're actively aware act responsibly. As mentioned in the vid personally I often previously felt abnormal especially as a man. Men are generally expected to be more emotionally strong and stable by themselves and society in general. This IMO is partly/generally a stereotype, misconception, and incorrect.
      Damn I have rambled enough. If I could offer simple advice to anyone struggling to cope as a HSP and/or empath it would be do research. There is so much information out there. This channel and a few others have helped me tremendously. Reading online or books I'm sure would help a lot I'm sure though would require more effort. Be particularly aware of your limits and set appropriate boundaries and guidelines to protect yourself emotionally/mentally. Don't try to suppress, ignore or be ASHAMED of your emotions/feelings. Be aware, conscious, and process your feelings and emotions. This is actually meditation. I don't like the term "meditation" bc it feels like a voodoo religious practice. IT'S NOT. Meditation IMO isn't act of turning off ur brain and being calm - it's the deliberate act being calm, relaxing, intelligently processing thoughts and feelings. HSP & empaths often do a lot of thinking and contemplating meditation helps to do it much more productively.

I do have more energy to me on days I wear it and if I forget I notice it. You could try that.

    It’s not as easy as Kati says to heal! I wish everyone was as sensitive as me! I keep getting hurt and others don’t care or don’t understand and they keep telling me I need to toughen up! Or I should not intellectualize things! I’m actually becoming even more sensitive as years go by and it makes me feel like an alien and I constantly get hurt by people’s insecurities, insensitivities, ignorance, narcissism, injustice and cruelty! I can’t change things! It’s so helpless! Even knowing why I’m different doesn’t eliminate the suffering! I wish everyone could understand and feel how I feel or I could understand how they think!

    I am an HSP and it does me more good than bad! I am highly sensitive to "good" things and get overwhelming happy by the smallest things. Like if I see a pretty bird I can be so deeply moved and excited and I can lighten up those around me with my joy because it reminds others of all the beauty in the small things as well. I am very extroverted and being HSP attracts people to me because I am so sensitive to any stories or feelings people share, like any person's story will just make me feel moved deeply. It helps me to understand others better and to make others feel heard and appreciated. But I take a lot of precautions to preserve my happiness; sad or traumatic stories or movies can ruin my whole day, so I limit the movies I watch and avoid horror / thriller ones all together. I cut people off mid-convo and tell them "don't tell me this story - I can't hear this." like if its too dark I just mentally can't take it! That's why people initially think I would be the best therapist with my extreme empathy until they realize that their trauma will traumatize me lol. I would literally cry more than my clients.

    • @alissashreddah
      @alissashreddah 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Andy Brice that is so true. Why is it so loud w/o a dance floor? There’s a trendy place near me that does that and I don’t eat there because you literally can’t talk to a person standing next to you and with hearing impairments it would be even worse. Establishments should consider their patrons first. If there’s a dance floor I understand loud music, but when it’s just a place for socializing it doesn’t need to be jarringly loud!

    I’ve always told people close to me that I’m just highly sensitive but haven’t been able to put it into words and how all the symptoms you’ve stated connect and contribute to my moods/reactions/emotions. I am actually crying because I feel incredibly validated as such a highly sensitive person that I’m gone for words. People can see this and think what on earth is the big deal, but I have been so confused on how I deal with my own emotions and why I feel the way I do for nearly 10 years - it’s been 4 years since I’ve been able to even begin managing it. I read so much into people’s facial reactions, their responses. I also am so, so, so incredibly sensitive to loud noises (restaurants, public places, even a class room, even as little as people’s voices.... I’m so incredibly sensitive to yelling, but more panic inducing sensitive - I feel this is related to trauma, but also definitely would relate to me being sensitive. Am also sensitive to physical touch/feeling as I even get to the point where my skin feels like it’s actually hurting). Recently, I’ve been learning how to deal with “drama” - I had a friend turn on me in the past year and when having a conversation about how that person hurt me, I’ve had to sit there and explain to them that I need 5 minutes to process what they’ve said, to collect my thoughts, and when I’m done thinking I will have my response for them. I’m doing a lot better than how I used to be, but the depth that I look into things is unreal and something I think will stay with me forever.
    Thank you for this video, I’m overwhelmed that what has literally eaten me alive for years is in this video.

      I honestly feel like the whole "sensitivity = weakness" thing is something that guys made up on their own and is a standard that they hold themselves to, not women. Sure, there are some girls out there that think men who cry are overly sensitive, but in general the majority of girls that I know all think that sensitive and vulnerable guys are extremely attractive. Girls like to know what guys are feeling and they like to know that they aren't alone, and it makes girls way more comfortable with being expressive with all their own feelings if they know that the guy they're attracted to is comfortable being emotional as well.

    Sometimes I get to be a Highly Sensitive Person !! I have a Very High Autism Spectrum # 1 !! I am a very thankful that I got High Autism Spectrum # 1 because I know people like me are very special !!
    Most of the people today are very ignorant and refuse to understand what an Autism person goes through in life !!
    It takes a very special person to talk to me in a very special sweet , kind and a very nice way !! Most people I could get along with but there are a few people who would be a pain to get along with !!
    No matter who you are there will always be people that will complain about anything !! I used to beat myself up and had a fit with a tantrum temper . If I understood why I was punished because of this or that instead of being beaten with a belt or a slap in the face then I wouldn’t have acted up !! Please talk to people very nicely !! The Bible says that a very sweet , soft answer turns away anger but a harsh answer stirs up anger !! Thank you 🙏 !!

    Wow... I suspected that I was an HSP but the one thing I never clicked with was the over stimulation aspect... I have never had a hard time focusing on something so I didn't think this really applied to me but listening to you explain that people with HSP also CARE so deeply about every bit of information that comes our way, it made me realize that that's where so much of the anxiety comes from! I hyper focus on so many things, feeling almost guilty if I can't invest the same depth of emotion into each one and that is sooooo frustrating. But now that I see that it's just an aspect of myself (and not a bad aspect), I feel like I can go easy on myself more. Thanks :)

    See, THIS is what I love most about your channel. I had no idea this was even a thing, and this is TOTALLY ME and had I not watched this video I would’ve never known. I like being able to name my conditions because it makes me feel like I can get a better handle on them. Thank you, Kati!

    When I was little (5-9 yrs old) my dad was a professor at UCLA and we would often go to the football games. I loved going to the games... up until one of the teams inevitably lost. I’d cry the entire way home because I felt so badly for the losing team. This story just perfectly sums up the person that I am. I’m proud of my sensitivity- I don’t see it as a vulnerability but a strength that many don’t have. It makes me a natural healer/ helper. I just need to maintain strong boundaries because if I don’t, that’s when it becomes a vulnerability.

      Healer here & you can't pour from an empty cup is a famous quote but tbh, it fills my emotional cup up to heal others, do you experience that too?

    It's overwhelming sometimes. Everytime I'm watching a show, and a character shows emotion, I feel it like it's my own. Happiness, sadness, grief (sometimes I'm drawn to cry as the character cries). I have to fight it when there are other people around because they don't get it. But I love it when I'm alone it's like I'm being present with the show/movie :). Also helps me deal with situations with people etc. Feels like esp sometimes.

    My mum's been "telling" me that I'm a HSP and though I know I'm very emotional and sensitive, I never really classified myself as one. Now, however, after your video and taking the test you took, I recognise a lot of the traits in myself. When you said HSPs hate conflict something in me clicked. I start to cry at the smallest of (serious) conflicts and really try to avoid being in one. Next to the difficulty that comes with being a HSP though, I'm also very grateful because I feel like I get to enjoy things to a deeper extent. Music moves me a lot and I enjoy good food immensely, which are two great pleasures in life. Thank you for this video Kati 💛

    You nailed it. I'm moved now because of how closely I identify with this. I do embrace and celebrate being a highly sensitive person, but it is challenging. Yesterday I immediately felt someone's heavy mindset as soon as I walked into the space. People's depression can overwhelm me, and their mania or hyperness can overwhelm me too. White noise in restaurants are fine, i can read and write there, but two people talking loudly near me, forget it- I have to move. Just today someone called my intuitive. Nobody until now has explained me as well as you just did in this video. thanks it helped a lot!

    I sent this video to my therapist because I identified so deeply with everything you described. I think for me the part that might be the most helpful in therapy is exploring how this affected me as a child, and therefore the person I am now. Thanks Kati!

    I have a hyper sensitive personality disorder and it is really painful because it is frustrating to form any form of any type of relationships I lived in isolation for alot of years

      Being an HSP is not a personality disorder. It's about being more human. Keep in mind that we are living a world which being less human is considered as normal. If I weren't an HSP, I would prefer being an HSP that's being human, anormal in this world.

    Thank you for this video, I finally understand what is going on with myself, it is a big deal for me, so I just truly want to thank you. Everything that you talked about in this video was how I feel and process things on a daily basis and I always knew that I process and very often feel different than other people and was like what is wrong with me, or when you said how HSPs can feel other people's emotions and feel it like those emotions are theirs, it's what has been the most struggling part for me in my life, since I've gone through a lot of stuff (depresion, almost suicide) and I really had enough 😂 so when I am all happy and everything is going well and then for example I just watch one youtube video of a person that I see is sad cause of this and that, after I watch it, I feel exactly what that person does and I also just become sad and depressed all of a sudden for like the next 4 or 5 hours and I'm like "what is going on?!" So one more time, thank you for making this video I finally know what it is that makes me different from others and I can deel with it better since I finally understand what it is 😁
    (And sorry if some sentences don't make sence english is not my native language 😂)

    Thank you so much for this video. I can relate to this. I have always been a sensitive person. When I was a kid I was told that I was too sensitive. As an adult..."don't take it personally". I feel very deeply and can pick up on and take on other's feelings. I like that I am so detailed and have deep feelings but sometimes it's just too much.

    I know ive always been a HSP, and people either really like it or get annoyed by it but when i was in highschool for years i had to write about my thoughts in a journal every day as much as possible. i was known as quiet unless someone (anyone) would speak to me or make a connection and most of the time it felt better to put in my headphones and be in my own solitude in class. i think that was one of the best things i did subconsciously
