Assam: Dima Hasao council member begins hunger strike demanding implementation of Article 244A

Musician-turned-politician and a member of the Dima Hasao Autonomous Council, Daniel Langthasa, began a hunger strike in Assam’s Haflong on July 12. Initiated under the banner of the 6th Schedule Protection Committee, the youth leader has placed four charter of demands which include immediate implementation of Article 244A that allows the centre to establish an autonomous state within Assam in areas that come under the Sixth Schedule.
Langthasa also demands the review of the 125th Constitution Amendment Bill, the end of the Panchayat system in areas under the 6th Schedule, and an increase in Assam assembly seats for the Dima Hasao district.
Speaking to the media, Langthasa said that despite promises and mentions in the manifestos of all political parties, the implementation of Article 244A is yet to see the light of the day.
"The BJP in it's manifesto had said that if the party comes to power they will implement Article 244A. And not just the BJP, this has been mentioned by the Congress and all other regional parties. Everyone wants the implementation of Article 244A. But sadly, they make such promises during elections but go silent soon after elections are over. That is why the people of Dima Hasao have come out on this hunger strike. It is a do-or-die situation for us. and we are not going to wait. We have waited for 55 years, but no more," Langthasa added.

In Meghalaya other tribes of Assam like Karbi,Dimasa,Bodo,Koch,Tiwa,Hajong are not getting even basic rights of equal job reservation in government jobs ..compared to the khasi,jaintia & garo...Assam St,s are struggling more for basic rights in Meghalaya compared to Assam..And resently Khasi students union submitted memorandum to Chief ministers office to remove Assam tribals as recognised tribals in Meghalaya...

Thw present generation agrees that going to Meghalaya was a better option but wearing traditional dress has got nothing to do this. Khasi, Garo and Jaintia people's traditional attires are not suits and skirts either. Let us be more united dear brothers and sisters.

Ok give them 6th schedule, but they will also have to give 6 schedule for us as well. When we can't buy land at their autonomous land than why they buy land at rest in assam give them what they want but at thr same time give us also what we want. Live all seperate no need to live together

For your kind information I am from koch sub-community which belongs from lower and central Assam.
And there is already separation which exists between us you get your autonomous district in which their respective tribes gets the land rule law of buying and selling whereas in other parts they also can buy land acquire property without any hardle but the rest of other people residing in non-autonomous district doesn't have the right to acquire land in those places.
We have no problem if you want to live separately than live but you should also take all the people of your respective community form other non-autonomous district.
You know what the local natives of Assam has problems in living with other local natives of Assam but they have no problem in feeding the non-natives people's such as nepali, Bengali, bihari, muslims.
