Again, Overkill Unearthed - to me - just may be my favorite thing in metal commentary right now. Banger is the best thing when it comes to record reviews, but the masterpieces that they revisit in their Overkill Rewind videos were giving us their views on our favorites! Now: we get to dissect masterpieces one by one and I couldn’t be clicking on a Banger video faster than I am with Overkill Unearthed. Thank you, Banger, for leading the way in metal reviews!

Martin Popoff I don’t know, you could argue that he had it easier, since Alice in Chains’ legacy created from “Dirt” is legendary, haha. And, I don’t know... your books and various publications that have made the name Martin Popoff one of the metal community’s go-to experts may just speak for itself with any review you do. Looking forward to the next one!

The ONLY bad albums are the ones we don't have anymore!
I love that this guy is keeping Type O Negative in our memories as i will always, but i don't like the continued which is better when they all mean something to a lot of us from beginning to end, in my opinion this guy is only wanting recognition from the BEST Band to ever exist!
I'm sure Peter would appreciate it and Hate this guy.

One of the most underrated metal albums of all time! The main riff in White Slavery is possibly the darkest, dirgiest, sludgiest riff I've ever heard. It's like they poured 2 parts Black Sabbath, 1 part Candlemass and 1 part Crowbar into a cauldron and stirred for 666 seconds.
A little surprised that Martin didn't mention that for a long time Peter didn't speak very highly of the album, maybe in part because he was going through an extremely difficult time in his life when it was being made. Nonetheless, the album is a masterpiece.

World Coming Down is my favourite album of all time so you can only imagine how happy I was to see this video. Its beautiful and heartbreaking and the riffs are so heavy they're agonizing to listen to in some passages. Peter Steele was truly a one of a kind who sang from the heart, on this record more than any other.

"White Slavery" alone is worth the price of all the records in the world.
WCD is a wonderful record, very dark and painful to listen for me.
Anyway, I'll leave you with this guy's opinion, which I happen to agree with: "I love WCD because it's so depressive, everytime I listen to it it makes me wanna suicide." by Josh Silver.

I had the opposite experience with this album that I had with “October Rust”. Every song on October Rust hit me like a ton of bricks the first time I heard it and it instantly became my favorite album. “World Coming Down” seemed a bit too dark and depressing for me at first, but I committed to listen to it over and over again and it quickly became my second favorite album of theirs. Listening to “October Rust” and “World Coming Down” back to back gives you the best of both worlds when it comes to Type O Negative, in my opinion.

Although I think the host took the subject very lightly, I agree with "The most TON album" part. The most powerful and true of their albums, the most mature I think - far from the hardcore-chaotic debut, enough of dark jokes and sexy winks. This is Type O that i will keep with me forever.
And about the Beatles... Peter was educated right when it comes to music - They always said The Beatles and Black Sabbath were the fundamental influence, but there's a lot of Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Sisters of Mercy and many many more. TON feels different because many bands feel like "Hey, let's play metal", while the Type O is a vast pool of inspirations put together, and the gothic gloom and doom is just the outer shell, the cauldron which keeps all those influences well mixed. Shame that many people scoff at the surface and miss the insides, even I had a rough start with them. But once you go black (and rotten green), you never go back.

Incredible album. I remember seeing them in Toronto at The Guvernment on this tour. Still have the shirt. Thanks to Martin for mentioning the opening track. Much like with the "Bad Ground" situation on the absolute fucking masterpiece that was "October Rust", the first track "Skip It" gave me a terrified feeling as I tried the disc out in my 1999 Sony Discman and thought my copy was bad. Still one of my favourite bands, and I can't wait to keep the tradition of listening to "All Hallow's Eve" this October. Check out Kenny and Johnny's band "Silvertomb".

World Coming Down is probably my favorite Type O album. Bleak, dark, depressing and heavy as can be in many spots. The very end instrumental section of Everything Dies is one of the heaviest weight experiences in music. You can feel the death and mourning and then followed by Lung and the death experience. Powerful!

Type O Negative has been my favorite band since seeing them open for Motley on the BK tour. I’ve always admired the tongue in cheek aspect of the music, that sly sardonic Peter Steele humor. One of the most endearing traits of theirs is the band’s ability to play covers and make them sound like TON. Case in point: their cover of Paranoid! Also, I have to add that I really dig their Beatles covers - especially when they would do Dear Prudence live!

"pretty similar to each other" - sounds like someone dropped off after World Coming Down!

The reason they lost sales was they were forced to focus only on Peter for vocals on releases. All the hits from Bloody Kisses had the dual vocals of Peter and Kenny, and it lost chemistry until they moved to Steamhammer when the Roadrunner contract was up. It's a great album in any case, one of my favorites.

I really miss Type O Negative, they had such a unique and different sound than most metal bands I listened in the 90’s and even today. Maybe it was the darkness that attracted me to them that I liked, maybe it was Pete Steele’s vocals that I liked, maybe a little bit of both. I love Blood Kisses, October Rust and World Coming Down. Their last few records weren’t as polished as these three but they’re were such a tight band and I thought they’d always be around and I was saddened of Pete’s passing in 2010. R.I.P. Peter...😔🤟🏻🎸

World Coming Down was an amazing record when I first heard it. This was definitely they're most depressive album considering all the turmoil that Peter Steele went through, but the music was incredibly dark and atmospheric. I always have a hard time calling a Type O record a bad album, and this is no exception. This further cements Type O Negative as the definitive Gothic metal band having to expand their range in terms of tone and emotion with every passing album.

Difficult to pick a favourite Type O record, i love them all so damn much, for different reasons, but this one is kinda peculiar, and indeed stands out. After a couple of goth albums, they drop a doom monster. No sexual fantasies, no romance this time, it's a deep, dark, sorrowful album. The main riff of the title track always gives me goosebumps. R.I.P. Peter, i've never known you, but damn i miss ya.

This guy made some interesting points. "They were kinda going down the tubes" stands out. October Rust is their best album- one million times played at least & my CD player died. World Coming Down is arranged like classic 70's era PF album. "White Slavery" is one of the greatest songs ever written. Peter was always brilliant lyrically & creatively. Probably his best tongue in cheek lyrical moment that makes a serious statement about addiction.

Dam-Ian P exactly, the last two albums are my favourite ones but they are indeed very different from each other. Life is killing me is very direct while Dead Again is a totally different animal, long intros and in a way it is kind of progressive in many songs, meaning that it has totally different parts in one same song. Best guitar riifs of their discography as well. My all time favourite, ALL SONGS ARE AMAZING and uniquely well written. Too bad it was is their last, I think Peter was inspired as never before he passed.

Great album. I still love TYPE O NEGATIVE since 1995!!!. I Love their guitar/bass tone and atmospheres on every record. Josh Silver keyboards were 50% the soul of the band, the other 50% were Peter, Kenny, Sal and Johnny.

Thanks to the Much Music "Loud" show (before it was a channel) I saw the TON Everything Dies video. I was instantly a fan and got their whole catalogue.

My favorite Type-O album. I just moved to Gravesend Brooklyn when the album broke, and I found out from it’s liner notes that I was getting my dinners from the same Chinese food place on Ave. X as some of the guys in the band. I loved the records before this one ever since hearing Bloody Kisses and was aware of the earlier albums and Carnivore (but I was not a big fan). This album was played religiously and ever now and then I’d see Pete at L’Amores wondering around.

October rust is my go to album by Type O. I still play it regularly. I cant get through the fall without playing that album every day. But with that said. This album is their best and 100% IS their sound

Type O is in my top 5 of all time! This album is hit and miss for me, when put along with the rest of thier stuff. I need to be in a certain place when I hear this, because it brings a lot of memories up. I typically grab October Rust or Life Is Killing Me. Great review, and it's good to see some TON love! 🤘

I ordered world coming down from a CD club in 2000 (if anyone remembers those) on a whim. The album art and the little description appealed to then 17 year old me. I remember putting it in my CD player and getting confused, alarmed and upset by Skip it thinking that the disc was damaged. Then I heard White Slavery, part of it as this was before my attention span had evolved to understand what Type O was doing. Anyway, the sonic immensity and sludgy pace was overwhelming and amazing at the same time. I had never heard anything like it. I quickly browsed through the album and heard the beginnings of all the songs and then listened to the album front to back and that was it. I was a fan for life and proceeded to buy everything they'd ever recorded. Later after a hand injury I switched to playing bass from guitar after being informed that that "type o guitar sound" I was describing was actually the bass. type 1 negative was a huge influence on me, I am very thankful for them and for this album in particular because it served as a springboard for my musical and intellectual development.

I don't agree there's no Beatles in this record. Pyretta Blaze certainly has some Beatles-like sound to it, I even think Everything Dies has a similar sound to it.

Brilliant Album! 20 years later, still bring it out for a spin every now and then. As a whole, probably my second favorite album of theirs. I miss Peter so much! A musical genius he was.

i think you guys should revisit some awesome Canadian bands, especially from the Montreal scene of the late 90's early 00's.
    Albums like:
    Anonymus - Stress
Quo Vadis - Day Into Night
    Martyr - Warp Zone
B.A.R.F. - Catharsis (this one is more niche because it has some songs in French, but it is so brutal and dark!)

Johnny and Kenny from Type O did a live stream last Saturday and were asked about the Wagner book. Johnny said a lot of the book's content was 100% not true, though he never gave any specific details. Look up Johnny Kelly on Facebook and you can find the stream.

Type O Negative are one of maybe 5 bands I wished I had been able to see live. I've never been able to find another band like them. Who Will Save the Sane is my favorite off this album and I actually dig the last song on the album. Interesting to find out the backstory Sinus/Liver/Lung. Love this new series.

This is the first Type O record I ever heard, blasting through my wall one morning when I was coming down (so my housemate did have a sense of humour). I thought it was a torturous dirge at the time; it's probably gone on to be my favourite Type O album (just bumping October Rust off its perch). The title track is phenomenal and the whole album sounds huge. It's extremely bleak, but still catchy in its way. It sounds amazing cranked up, but the songs still come through down low on a shitty stereo and that's the mark of great music.

my second favorite of theirs, after bloody kisses. world coming down is a much more cohesive work than bloody kisses though, the songs sit together better and it feels more mature and thought out. also, i love the beatles meddley, especially she's so heavy.

While I was purchasing The Fragile by Nine Inch Nails the same day it was released, the cashier had mentioned that Type O Negative came out with World Coming Down that day as well. I dismissed her album suggestion because I was only looking forward to purchasing my favorite bands new album. I saved my lunch money for weeks to purchase The Fragile so I could not afford to check out or take a chance on a new band. After hearing Everything Dies on the radio a few months later, I was an instant fan. I remember revisiting The Mortal Kombat soundtrack and listening to Blood & Fire (Out of the Ashes mix) on repeat. Eventually my father purchased World Coming Down for me for Christmas. It’s one of my favorite albums of all time. In retrospect, two of my favorite artists and albums were released the same day over 20 years ago.
