    I saw Milnes live performing the role of Don Giovanni in Caracas (Venezuela). That was a few years ago, but will never forget his powerful and compelling performance. For me one of the best baritone of all time.

    Your devotion to keeping the conductor misidentified in the Description is impressive. Milnes is the greatest baritone of all time, a colossus among giants.

    I heard Milnes in concert in the early 70's. Not only a great voice, but so vivid interpretations I knew what he was saying even before I knew the arias. And after all those exciting arias he ended with a mellow, non opera voice singing Shenandoah. I imagine to calm us after all the excitement.

    Quite superb! Was this from one of the Richard Tucker galas? Certainly Bonynge was a master of the French style. I enjoyed many Kraus and Milnes performances at Covent Garden from 1980 onwards and in fact Kraus sang outstandingly until his death, and without transposition.

    Never heard them together
    Like Schipa the voice of Kraus is small but cuts like a laser and is more audible than the bigger voice of Milnes. A great singing lesson here.
    Placement Placement Placement !

    • @Agorante
      @Agorante 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Wrong, wrong, wrong. I heard both at SF Opera many times. It was Milnes who had a disappointingly small sound compared with the other great baritones then singing like MacNeil or Wixell. Kraus was very damn easy to hear. Clear, focused, and he sang in the right fach for him. Both were at the high end of their respective ranges.

      I had expected more. The first time I heard him live was in Thais. He was a high baritone and that is a low baritone part. People who heard him told me he was sensational in Rigoletto. But I also heard him in Ernani which should have been a good part for him. and he was pale.
      SF Opera is a big and not very flattering hall. Bergonzi for example sounded quite weak there. He was better in smaller European halls. The best tenors in SF were guys like Vickers, King or Corelli. I only heard a few operas at the Met. I think it has better acoustics than SF.
      But I was responding to mostly to the comment that Kraus had a small voice. I heard Kraus quite few times and he sounded fine. Of course he sang only roles that were appropriate for him. But I never thought of him as having a small voice.

      It was in Ernani that I remembered him.. It might have been because Plishka was so good that evening and the bass role is high. So it came across as two baritones. Milnes suffered in the comparison.

      Singers have bad nights. They’re not going to be in good voice in every performance . The public tends to make demands on them. They’re not machines that can’t perform 100% every time. The nights I heard Milnes sing he was magnificent. One particular evening I can remember was Otello with Milnes and Domingo. That was a spine shilling performance. I think I saw him at the Met 15 times. And we actually met him out in the foyer during intermission at one of the Met galas we attended. He was very kind.

  • @Darksaga28
    @Darksaga28 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Alfredo Kraus squillante voce cuts through the orchestra nicely. Soon after this, his voice wasn’t the same. His technique wasn’t that perfect after all. And don’t tell me it was due to aging, when the great tenors of the past sang past their primes with their voices intact. Lauri-Volpi, Gigli etc etc
