    LIMIT TEST OF IRON
    Limit = value or amount that is likely to be present in a substance
    Test = to examine or to investigate
    Impurities = a foreign matter present in a compound
    Limit test is defined as a quantitative or semi-quantitative test designed to identify and control small quantities of impurity which is likely to be present in the substance. Limit test is generally carried out to determine the inorganic impurities present in the compound. In short, the limit test is nothing but to identify the impurities present in the substance and compare it with the standard.
    Importance of Limit tests:
    To find out the harmful amount of impurities
    To find out the avoidable/unavoidable amount of impurities Limit test is defined as a quantitative or semi-quantitative test designed to identify and control small quantities of impurity which is likely to be present in the substance. Limit test is generally carried out to determine the inorganic impurities present in the compound.
    LIMIT TEST OF IRON
    Apparatus Required
    Nessler cylinders, (50 ml), Glass rod, Stand
    Chemicals Required
    1.Standard Iron Solution: 0.1726 gm of ferric ammonium Sulphate and dissolve in 10ml of 0.1 N H2SO4 and sufficient water to produce 1000 ml.
    2. 0.1 N H2SO4: 4.904 gm in 1000ml of water.
    3. 20% Iron free citric acid.
    4. Thioglycollic acid
    5. Ammonia solution
    Principle:
    The test depends upon the reaction between ferrous iron and thioglycollic acid in the presence of ammonia. When a pale pink to deep reddish purple colour is produced. Ferric iron is reduced to ferrous iron by the thioglycollic acid and the compound produced is ferrous thioglycollate. Citric acid forms a soluble complex with iron and prevents its precipitation by ammonia as ferrous hydroxide. Ferrous thioglycollate is colourless in neutral or acid solutions. The colour develops only in the presence of alkali. It is stable in the absence of air but fades when exposed to air due to oxidation to the ferric compound. Therefore the colours should be compared immediately after the time allowed for full development of colours is over.
    Procedure:
    Test sample
    1. Sample is dissolved in specific amount of water and then volume is made up to 20 ml.
    2. Add 2 ml of 20 % w/v of citric acid (iron free).
    3. Add 0.1 ml of thioglycollic acid
    4. Add ammonia to make the solution alkaline and adjust the volume to 50 ml.
    5. Keep aside for 5 min
    6. Color developed is viewed vertically and compared with standard solution.
    Standard compound
    1. 2 ml of standard solution of iron diluted with water upto 20ml.
    7. Add 2 ml of 20 % w/v of citric acid (iron free)
    8. Add 0.1 ml of thioglycollic acid
    9. Add ammonia to make the solution alkaline and adjust the volume to 50 ml.
    10. Keep aside for 5 min
    2. Color developed is viewed vertically
    3. Earlier ammonium thiocyanate reagent was used for the limit test of iron. Since thioglycolic acid is more sensitive reagent, it has replaced ammonium thiocyanate in the test.
    Observation:
    The purple color produce in sample solution should not be greater than standard solution. If purple color produces in sample solution is less than the standard solution, the sample will pass the limit test of iron and vice versa.
    Reasons:
    Citric acid helps precipitation of iron by ammonia by forming a complex with it.
    Thioglycolic acid helps to oxidize iron (II) to iron (III).

      2-3 drops then after check the pH of solution using pH paper
      If pH paper doesn't turns blue then
      Add more drops of ammonia and again check the pH of solution
