I cannot believe that I am the first person to put a comment on this piece of music. One virtuoso performance after another. The people who were around at the time must have been drooling!
Juan Tizol (22 January 1900 - 23 April 1984) was a Puerto Rican trombonist and composer. He was born in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico. Tizol got the call to join the Ellington band in the summer of 1929. Juan also was a band composer. His best known compositions, "Caravan" (1936) and "Perdido" (1941). Tizol was responsible for bringing Latin influences into the Ellington band with compositions such as "Moonlight Fiesta", "Jubilesta", "Conga Brava", and others.
Ah makes so much sense now. When I first heard caravan the opening chords gave me an overwhelming feel of Latin american music. It felt like tango.. Now I understand why. Thanks.
Thank you so much for adding this history! Juàn Tizol is that level of musician we call Maestro! Thank you also for listing those songs for me to add to my playlist of cool jazz and latino music.
What comment do you need to give as you should just enjoy. This is most definetly my favourite version. The way it kicks in with the smashing piano and the groovin' percussion. It's alive!
Yes, I am Colombian, but I know Juan composed this beautiful master piece. There are a lot of versions of it from Latin Jazz to bossanova, flamenco, etc. Bravo!!!
I think Goatstoag was trying it on -- WHY he was I will leave someone else to say! What an effective piece and how it has been used so much by so many Jazz Musicians over the decades. I thank the person who put it on youtube. A very historic recording!
I think I remember this song playinig on the radio as we blasted down US Rt 11 Through Pa, Va and Tennessee on Christmas 1852...listening on our Delco radio in our magniificent Big Black Buick Super 4 door. We also listened to the Longsines Symphonette. Love those days. Liked the car much better than the suicide door 48 Dodge I was flung out of on Rt 9 in Hudson NY.
I currently play guitar in the GC Swing Band but next week I'll be rehearsing with the St Louis Swing Band. This tune is on the set list. I'm excited, but nervous. This is not an easy song.
A PISTON TROMBONE!!! That's always been a rarity!!! Certain musicians prefer it when they perform ROSSINI Overtures (much harder to play than they sound).
Gerardo Saavedra it was a surprise to me, i thought the whiplash had nailed it, but, that was so technician, this version reminds me how bullshit that movie really is, music is about the vibe, not a fucking competition or high tempos/toomuchnotes (althought i still like the movie!)
Could anyone recommend me some songs or artists that have composed such wonderful tunes similar to this one? I play the sax and I adore Arabian melodies. The combination of any traditional music with jazz it's my favorite way of expression (sr for my English)
@@malaktaillouli834 I truly appreciate your response. Playing these amazing instruments and with such a nice taste in music, your repertoire must be really beautiful!
I don't know if you've heard of an American artist, Joe Jackson, but I love his band's renditions of jazz classics, and he composes music that sounds like it's from another era. He has an album called "Duke" and it has this song, of course. It's my favorite one on the album, but it's all good to me. Joe Jackson sincerely loves this music. In the 80s he was a new wave pop star, but his music has evolved and matured. He plays the music he wants now, he's not concerned about selling albums or making the charts as he's got enough money and fame. Oh! I just remembered another rock band I love that often incorporates Arabian melody, they are called Firewater. "This Is My Life" is a favorite of mine and it definitely has an Arabian/Indian flavor to it!
im looking for one with mallets, tenor and alto sax, clarinets, flutes, slide trombones and maybe a bass trombone, piano, maybe baritone, and drums. i cant find one
I'm not sure to what purpose it's being used in this song, but it's usually given to brass players who normally play instruments with valves to make it easier for them to play trombone
кто не в курсе - наберите в поиске фильм - whiplash... там (музыка из фильма) гораздо интереснее версия каравана и другой очень хорошей музыки, ну а сам фильм вообще - "шедевр"
I am a pianna player...so I am not as knowledgable about horns...but the featured trombone seems muted. Fill me in. Am i just wrong or...was there technique involved. or...
This is really interesting, does anyone know artists that sound like this? This is almost like what jazz might have become in a parallel universe, had jazz fusion not become a thing...the harmony is bizarre, has a middle eastern flavour , tinges of latin, a lot of tension and dare I say little blues influence. Amazing piece of music though.
Got to see Duke Ellington with Louis Bellson at Lincoln Center 1966; got to meet them. Have program signed by both! Great day !!!!
Best comment ever on youtube, wow! :)

Perharps because Juàn Tizol has vascos origin's. At this moment he was reconnized like the best musician and composer in Puerto Rico.
Thank you for bit of history, very much appreciated!
he also got charles mingus kicked out of ellington's big band. never forget
Thank you so much for adding this history!

Look at that violinist. He's so proud at how he threw that left-hand pizzicato in there : )
Ray Nance, I believe.
@@fluffshepnetwork7067 Correct. For obvious reasons, his nickname was 'Floorshow' .
one of my favorite songs played by the composer himself on valve trombone, with a great intro on trumpet by Cat Anderson.

They go a bit "outside" when Ray Nance goes into his violin solo. You have to love it.
Dear Duke! It's 50 years after you've gone. What a great bandleader, what a great musician!
This must be one of the best songs ever performed.
I see that you are getting absolutely no argument, so I'll be the one to say...
You're damn right it's perfection!!
It's like a chaos festival a la the Duke. I love DE. Look at his perma-grin! He is delighted!
This is a GREAT recording!
Bravo Juan Tizol! One of my favorite songs.
Proud of my puertorican homie, Juan Tizol!
Me too! Puertorriqueño.!!

@THESATURNSSC1 And the African and the Taíno Native, too.
Gracias por compartir esta joya musical. Saludos desde Valencia (España)
Thank you, Garrison Keillor, for guiding us to this nugget.
He does a great job on PISTON TROMBONE (I haven't seen one of those in 40 years). Gracias DIOGENES. Bendiciones!
Great masterpiece!!
Realy a milestone on music development.

It's good that Cuban music is present, it's the basis
You mean African rythm aka Afro-Cuban.
Thank You for THE MUSIC! THANK YOU DUKE ELLINGTON! Only, pour les connaisseurs ...
I( have heard a lot about Louis Bellson's drumming but this is my first look/listen. How patient.

красотища, непривычно что саксофон чуть медленнее звучит чем остальные; но здорово
Love the violinist , a cheeky twinkle in his eyes n a gr8 smile 😁
Great Clip! Thank you for sharing this.
Love this song plus seeing a great valve trombone player
я слушал эту вещь в исполнении его внука Пола Эллингтона и его оркестра !!

the valve trombonists vibrato makes him sound like hes really really nervous LOLOL
excellent, thank you for posting
Whiplash brought me here. Great song.
Same to me!
Gerardo Saavedra this is better than the whiplash version lol
lickingfrog, I agree.

lickingfrog JK Simmons was fantastic.
Great composition and performance. Valve trombone fever!
Juan Tizol a Puertorrican National Treasure creator of the Latin Jazz as such!

Louis Bellson. Double bass drum!!!!!
Eno seens to have lifted the rhythm track for his Somber Reptiles crawling around Another Green World.
Эллингтон, мне кажется, многими своими произведениями был обязан Джелли мортону
It almost sounded as if they were redefining Arabian music with jazz
I think I'm gonna write this in my assignment lol
Actually an Arab composer plagiarized this tune in a song called Gabbar.
Totally kick ass DUDE, it's like really trippen out
Respect
thankyou thankyou!
The valve trombone was Dukes idea.A real genius.
This makes a great ska track.
And now a second dislike... What has the world come to?
Fantastic
It's Duke! No comment needed...
Happy birthday Duke!!!
29/4/1899 Nace el jazzman Duke Ellington

Is that a trombone with valves? I didn't know that was a thing...

Bob Brookmeyer, no ? My dad also plays valve bone, slide guys don't consider them to be real, hehh...
Tman Hall Actually, Juan Tizol's MAIN instrument was the valve trombone, because Duke specifically liked his sound on it.
The composer of this tune Juan Tizol always played the valve trombone - that's all.
Pure beauty!

thrilling and used to great effect in magic shows or in the film Funny Bones
Now, was the pianist rushing or draggin'?
Are you kidding me?

Dragon, because absolutely he is.

Not quite my tempo.

I think he's referring to the movie whiplash...you should watch it if u haven't
You're not quit it's audience... You have whiplash fast food
They are rushing
I think the guy that wrote the tune, the trombone player, would know what tempo he wants his song at.

Good ol'days!
Listen to how understated the durm part is, crazy, when it's the best part of the piece., imho
I had no idea Jack Benny could blow the valve trombone with such style.
This is Juan Tizol actually.
That was Juan Tizol at the valve (piston) trombone and he was also the composer.
Yes, i know. The Jack Benny comment was a "look a like" joke.
Hmm, tell us more about this "joke" thing. How does it work?
I know im 3 years late but, r/whoooooosh

That clarinet player's siiiiick! Who is he?
Jimmy Hamilton on clarinet?
Is this song copyrighted by Juan Tizol or anyone?
Who's the violinist, anyone know?
Multi-instrumentalist Ray Nance, who's probably best known for his trumpet solo on Take the A Train.
💛🌲😄💙
Is that a valve trombone?
That's John Sanders of valve trombone yes?
That is Juan Tizol on valve bone.
I have to play this for black history month.
Great you like this lovely piece, but you should know this was composed by a guy from Puerto Rico, so he was actually latin... and white :v
