  • Edward Kennedy (Duke) Ellington (April 29, 1899 - May 24, 1974) was an American jazz pianist, orchestra leader, and composer.
Duke Ellington was a versatile jazz composer whose influence on music between the 1920s and the 1960s was significant. He is considered one of the greatest American composers.
His major successes were Take the A Train, Satin Doll, Rockin' in Rhythm, Mood Indigo, Caravan and Sophisticated Lady. In the 1920's and 1930's he worked a lot with Irving Mills, from 1940 mostly with Billy Strayhorn.
Many of his compositions were specially attributed to certain musicians of his orchestra: Johnny Hodges, Bubber Miley, Cootie Williams, Joe "Tricky Sam" Nanton, Barney Bigard, Ben Webster, Harry Carney, Sonny Greer, Otto Hardwick and Wellman Braud.
One of the best known of these pieces is Concerto for Cootie (1940). Some musicians from his band achieved star status themselves, such as Jimmy Blanton and Ben Webster.
This unique and ultra rare performance was filmed by AVRO tv on film at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, The Netherlands on November 2, 1958.

The only human I've ever seen or met that, when you got within 6 feet of him, you could faintly see (and feel) an aura around him. For some unearthly reason, he gave off a "genius" aura. You knew you were in the presence of genius. Strange but true.

@@mariahelenaafonso8615 I noticed that, in his European appearances, he showcased most of his famous sideman, Ray Nance, Paul Gonsalves, Hamilton, Sam Woodward, and the glorious Johnny Hodges. Duke also seems to spend more time at the piano, showing off his pianomistic chops. He really respects his European audiences

That presence was/is part of Him being the Biggest name/person in the whole History of Jazz/Big Band Swing !
That AURA (of Him, of the 'Boys', and the Collective Orchestra) could even be felt in this Video, 50 years later...
And boy, COULD HE PLAY THE PIANO !
(the BEST non-classical Piano Player of all time, no doubt)

You know who else said that? Peter Wolf from the J. Geils Band. He met him once at a club when the band was first starting out and he said Mr. Ellington had this certain aura about him. He was impeccable in every way, shape or form.

Its inspired brilliance full fire, the" kinda dukish" intro tinkling just fills you with eager knowledge of what was to follow.

I am no musical theorist and cannot play any instrument or I'm able to read music all I know is that I love Duke's stabbing at that piano and when the tempo picks up and the horns join in it's always up and away. I feel ya.

Actually music is not beyond race! This was during the time of Apartheid in South Africa-invented by the Dutch from Amsterdam! Dream on my friend. They like our music; it does not mean they like black people. Wakey, wakey!

A full Duke concert showcasing the band in full flight. Again I ask why are the best archival full performances from European television? Not just jazz but also pop, rock, blues.

If you changed the set list from
    00'00" - The Mooche
    07'16" - My Funny Valentine
    to the more standard
    00.00 The Mooche
    07.16 My Funny Valentine
maybe the commercials would happen between the songs instead of during the songs.
The concert is absolutely wonderful, but the commercials are twice as loud as the music and interrupt the songs right when the band is cookin'.
