Indiana Jones & the Dial of Destiny - How to Old-School Hollywood | Film Perfection

- Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (Indiana Jones 5), takes Indy on an adventure through time, from the second world war to the second century before Christ... somehow (?). The movie as a whole is not the greatest and makes Kingdom of the Crystal Skull actually seem pretty good. But since everybody is making videos calling it bad, today I wanna highlight one thing it does well: using size-related writing tricks to make itself seem bigger like they used to do in the days of old-school Hollywood. If you can't afford to make your movie massive with expensive CGI like everyone else today, here's what you can do the same with writing.

The first 20 minutes just felt like Indiana Jones…
It's the only good part of the movie. The rest is dog xit
@Julianjulesr1361 more consistent yes, but the 50s America part of Crystal Skull is still a lot more fun and exciting than most of Dial of Destiny and how it constantly drags its feet. I mean ffs the train sequence is so long, most of it just ppl walking in the cars, no creative sequences at all. Whereas the motorcycle chase in Crystal Skull after the diner scene is such Spielbergian fun (rewatch the clip on yt, a lot more fun than Dial of Destiny's chases)
@@kronozord8346 Yep the rest is woke propaganda.
@@GuineaPigEveryday Agreed
The problem is that they had some good ideas but with very poor execution and the problems that are created were closed very poorly. For example Indiana is accused for murder of his colleagues but we never see any serious consequences. They just forget it. Or every time he escapes the bad guys they always find him first at the next sequence. And all of these because writers need to end movie and not have a normal escalation of acts and consequences
That's just modern Disney writing in general. In Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, RiRi Williams blows up a police blockade, presumably killing or injuring several officers. This is never addressed again outside of a vague line from Shuri basically saying that she smoothed things over with the US Government, as if RiRi hadn't intentionally committed murder.
He was?! I forgot that

This movie broke my heart with how bad it was, and how it utterly destroys Indys legacy.
This series ended at The Last Crusade for me.
@@Julianjulesr1361yep, and Dial tried its best to rebuild that legacy but unfortunately failed
@Julianjulesr1361 yeah that's what I mean, it's a good movie, in fact it's my third favorite Indy movie
Terminator destroyed its legacy with Genisys, Dark Fate was only slightly better, but by then nobody cared
@Julianjulesr1361
I would argue that as bad as Crystal Skull is, it at least left Indy in a good place; with his true love Marrion, happily married and retired.
Destiny breaks them up only so it can put them back together again for no reason.
There is only 3 Indiana Jones movies.
@@PaganMinDNWFunny, I actually thought Genisys is great had it be R-rated, and Dark Fate to be absolutely terrible.
At least the idea of John Connor being the villain is more fresh than killing off John only to replace him with another less interesting character fulfilling the exact same role.
I see what your doing, the theme of the video is doing things differently from people would expect. I’ve been watching your videos for a long time and when the first thing you said about being in a plane I thought it was a set up for a sponsor like you usually do, then it turns out you actually crash and the video gets taken over by cinemeto. Bravo 👏
Yeah I was so expecting it to be a sponsor that I fast forwarded through it and missed the set up for Cinemento.

And it was exactly then around 9:57 that I stopped the video . I'll come back when Filmento returns. I just not feeling anything about the generic other "voice". Tata for now.
1980's movie The Final Countdown did kinda pave the way for a modern military to go back in time. The movie mostly dealt with a lot in ethics & timeline issues rather than the actual superior nature of modern vs old combat. I watched it as a kid and loved it.
It wasn't about war at all, I think. More like a classic time travel story with the usual paradox, but with a few interesting twists. Time traveling with a DeLorean is cool, but with an entire aircraft carrier is on an entirely other level.
And it's very clever budget-wise, because I'm pretty sure they didn't pay for the ship, and they needed almost no other set. I don't know the story behind it, but it would be funny if they had a different movie in mind originally but didn't have the budget and were forced to shop around for some really cheap set. Like how Star Trek invented the transporter because they didn't have money for shuttles.
I am a fan of the final countdown. Have been since I was a kid. I have never seen anyone mention it or that had heard of it. Thanks for the shout out.
My dad told me about that movie. It’s on my to watch list.
If you are into the concept and don't mind manga, there is one called Zipang that is the reverse of the Final Countdown, with a modern japanese destroyer ending up in WW2 just before Midway.
@@ethancampbell2422 Thank you for the recommendation. :)
The worst thing to happen to Indina Jones was the CGI. Indiana Jones always felt "right" when it was real stunts, real shooting locations, and practical props and sets. The sheer existence of CGI in this movie, and Crystal Skull, makes it feel like a cheap knock-off of the trilogy that came before. Just compare the train sequence in Last Crusade vs the one in Dial of Destiny. One of them actually felt like it was filmed on a train, and the other one looks like it was rendered by Bethesda while Harrison Ford smoked a joint in his trailer.
That train scene in Last Crusade was the BOMB!!! 😃
Also the Crusade one manages to be way more entertaining despite having lower stakes and the train going much slower, simply because it's more relatable.
Watch when this dude sees that last crusade was a pioneer of cgi
I know the voice change was part of a bit, but a big part of your channel’s charm is your unique voice. This AI voice was really annoying to listen to and I zoned out for most of the video after it started playing.
I hope you see this feedback and take it to heart. Love your channel man.
Not to mention it can't even pronounce properly either 😂
I feel the same way about AI voices. They're not 'bad', but something just doesn't click in your brain when listening to it. Like your subconscious knows it isn't a real person and tries to ignore it.
Filmento died in a plane crash bro why would you expect him to continue
In less than a minute after the new voice kicked in, I turned the video off. It couldn’t hold my attention.
It’s the first Filmento video I’ve ever quit. 🥺
Stopped because the voice changed as part of a gag.
Damn that’s some next level sensitivity. You should apply to be a Disney writer.
A lot of the movie could've been cut, like the CIA plot - just have the German guy be an arms dealer with contacts in the American government and at least 30 minutes could've been cut off, making it a better movie. That said, the Syracusa scene is just amazing. This movie is a great candidate for a fan-edit.
you know we are in a bad time when the video essays are more well done and entertaining than a character that we all know could be written well by NUMEROUS people

He already has explained it multiple times. "Perfection" and "Failure" don't mean he thinks a movie is good or bad, it doesn't even mean he liked or disliked the movie, it just means that he believes positive or negative lessons can be taken from it. I loved loved loved the detail of the clock ticking at the beginning, when Indy is sad and depressed in his apartment, and then at the end it's still ticking when he awakes after Helena takes him back. Time is still moving forward, but now he doesn't feel misplaced anymore, he knows that the world still has a place for him in it. I found that very moving and also, sincere in a way that many movies these days are not.
Great catch, thought the same thing. The film has some great little nuances like that most people overlooked. I don't think it's a perfect Indy film, but it's a good one imo, and doesn't deserve all the fanboy hate it got from the moment it was even announced
Old School Hollywood being played at the end was a nice touch🤘🏻
I still think they should have made the co-star the real villain, it would fix so many problems mainly how they kept finding indiana every where they go
Her carelessness was enough anyway, that is how they found them half the time, the other half either because she "invited" them or because the main villain had a lot of knowledge himself.
It has a lot of issues, but the "subway's faster" line is classic Indy

Filmento is going nuts. I think it is because of the bad quality writing from Hollywood... It drove him mad.
When Spielberg declined to direct this movie, I knew immediately that it was going to be a dumpster fire. 🔥 Say what you want about Indy 4; as bad as it was, we still remember it. Indy 5 will be forgotten forever.

This channel was one of the best for movie reviews. Now, it's become so memey it's unwatchable.
I think I'm missing something. The thesis is that this movie shows how a movie can feel bigger than it is...a good example for creators who don't have MCU-level money. But I thought this movie cost hundreds of millions to make. Is the idea that (but for the strategies the movie used) this would have cost even more? But perhaps I'm misunderstanding and "bigger than it is" is not referring to the budget?
Yeah you missed a line in the script covering this.
It did cost at lot, bit the reason was mainly because they shot it during the pandemic, and for all the health precautions that they had to make, it make the day to day filming expensive af. Take for example Blade Runner 2049, that movie is huge and yet, it cost like half of Dial of Destiny and it looks way better.
Yes, it is that it is not the money you need to pour to elevate the situation, just context, like you can use the budget better
18:39 I actually did accidentally sleep through the entire boat section of the movie and it took watching this video to actually find out what happens. The point stands lmao

Putting 'Apollo 13' on TV in Indy's classroom is one of the reasons why I watch your channel.

I agree with 6:50, I remember days in school like the day before winter break or the last day of school or a new game comes out that day after school made the mundane days super special❤😊
I've Actually Enjoyed All the Indy Films TBH.
Sure this One, like "Crystal Skull", wasn't Great, but I still Enjoyed it.
I don't think is James Mangold's fault. His last 2 two movies (Logan and Ford V. Ferrari), are some if not the bests of his filmography, and they both show, that not only he can make exciting action sequences, but also a thrilling period movie, hell Ford V. Ferrari takes place in 1966, 3 years before Dial of Destiny, and it actually feels like the period is real, but Dial of Destiny does look and feel like all the mediocre movies Disney has made for the last 10 years, mediocre cgi, and not bad, but certainly not great execution, ad to the fact that they shot it during the pandemic, and well, we are left with this movie. I personally enjoyed it and also don't think there is a bad Indiana Jones movie, but yeah, this doesn't come even close to the original trilogy.
Really enjoyed this movie actually. I think people are being way to critical bc it’s Disney. Which yes usually sucks, but this time it was done right
It has it's flaws, and it has it's wins, it's not irredeemable for sure
The only thing in this video I have to disagree with is the negative opinion of the ending. I found it to be one of the most interesting depictions of the predestination/bootstrap paradox (cool time travel shit), it was appropriately foreshadowed and provided what to me felt like a satisfying resolution. (7/10 would watch again) it's a shame it failed
True, I felt like it was thematically well built up too
But Archimedes handed back the watch, didn't he? He broke the paradox.

I’m sorry that you are retiring from doing filmento. I learned to love life again after watching you these 12 years. I hope you enjoy going back home to Finland. We in Canada have lost a great critic and teacher, eh?
Spielberg: 😅 "Well, at least they don't fucking hate Part 4 that much anymore!"
I think the thing that really killed the movie for me was the part where Indiana Fucking Jones called the police. This wasn't our adventurous, ambitious, crafty Indiana, this was a sad, old man, who just wanted to be left alone. If day-of-retirement-Indiana had heard that Helena was in some sort of trouble in a different country, would he have gone? Younger Indy would have, because that's the plot of The Last Crusade.
And then he slowly turns back into the old Indy we know as he goes through the adventure he was thrust on. It's called character development. He started out broken and lost due to age and regret, and had to find himself and be reminded of who he is throughout the film. Duh.
@@codyt821 Should the end goal of a movie really be a character regressing to where they were at the end of the previous movies? Wouldn't it have been better to tell this as the story of Helena, the successor of Indy, learning how to live up to that mantle? Thus allowing us to continue to make movies in the Indiana Jones Universe, but also allowing our protagonist to not be so elderly that them riding a horse through the streets looks less like a heroic escape and more like grandpa having an episode.
Wish filmento could've seen the video finished, it's quite a good video
i think that's why the original trilogy was successful. In last crusade, everything was unexpected. Like the boat chase, the fire at castle brunwald, the bad guys at the other side of the fireplace, it always kept me at the edge of my seat.
what's kinda funny to me is that the final part with the planes of the army and stuff is _not_ new to me.
Ignoring other mentions (like The Final Countdown), I've seen similar at least twice, in the two anime, GATE and Drifters (with a few others here and there).
GATE has a modern military versus what's effectively a medieval fantasy world
Drifters has figures from history all appearing in the same place to fight a war on alien soil, with the more immediate comparison to this film being a scene where a Japanese WW2 fighter plane shows up and takes out ground forces and dragons.
Both lean more into _fantasy_ though, so I guess you could say that Indy's more realistic thing is new, but the overall "feel"... less so, to me at least.
What happened to the crashed plane of Jürgen? How did the Chesna land without any landing track? How did it get back into the air with a knocked out indi while a war is raging? Why isn't he spending his last days in prison?
Honestly its probably dumb, but my personal pet-peeve with the movie:
Why are the Nazis looking for the Holy Spear in some random Castle in Southern France? The thing had been part of the HRE's royal regalia for Centuries, it was always in either Nuremburg or Vienna
Well, i think Aliens (1986) or Star Wars Episode V (1980) are a pretty decent pick but I personally prefer Ben Hur (1959), they don't make them like that anymore.
Imo, this movie was fairly entertaining. But how the hell did this movie cost $300 million?
Covid and Harrison Ford got injured twice so they had to shut production down.
@@Coolcoolcooldude not mentioning constant reshoots. After a fatal test screening, they decided to practically rewrite the whole act 3, it was going to have a much different ending where Indy is erased from history and Phoebe Willer was going to replace all his accomplishments.

I really couldn't focus on what you had to say for the second half of the video cause of the ai voice. Don't deprive us of your great voice ever again!
Never heard filmento's voice break like that, it was genuinely a sad moment when he died
The "reverse to escalate" design is a great way to build tension in an action scene, but it has to be used the right way. The hero shouldn't be saved by the random lucky circumstance, but adapt to it and win thanks to his quick thinking. That's when the moment is satisfying, otherwise it feels like cheap slapstick, which is sadly a very common thing in modern CGI action scenes.
Lovely. Honestly, the movie seemed so underwhelming that I was completely on board to skip it entirely. Now that I’ve seen this video, I think I’ll give it a watch.
If this is the last one you made Filmento I am leaving, you are the soul.
How does the sequence in Syracuse not make sense? It’s a bootstrap paradox. The device was not built by anyone. It only fell into archimedes hands because Indiana brought it to Syracuse because… and so on and so on. It’s been down in fiction many times.
I agree with all your points good and bad, felt disconnected when you were disconnected etc. but I thought the good points overwhelmingly overrode the bad. I liked the movie much more than the 4th - saw it twice in the cinema. I also thought the idea of the Antikythera Mechanism as the McGuffin was brilliant given that we've only known about its function since 2021, when the movie must have been long in production. While I realize that most people who saw the movie had not the slightest awareness of the actual device, I fully understood the Antikythera Mechanism and thought its slight adaption (identifies portals in time) and attribution (invented by Archimedes) was clever. The actual device is from the time of Julius Caesar and is the tip of the iceberg in terms centuries of scientific and industrial development. It is an instrument of incredible mechanical sophistication. There must have been many others with equal sophistication but since they were made from bronze, they are all lost - the survival of this one device was miraculous. Awareness of this entire technological industry had been lost for thousands of years until the functions of the device were discovered two years ago.
Nathan Drake got a far better ending to his story than Indiana Jones and it's not even close.
