  • I have to be honest with you about Varkala... 😔
Eleise is not feeling very good here in Varkala, Kerala, India unfortunately. She doesn't like the room we are staying in. She is feeling hormonal. She is a bit home sick. It's not going well in Varkala at the moment. Can we turn it around? If there is a place to do it... I think Varkala is the place 🖤

First of all... please understand we're not bad mouthing India. This is our experience, at that time, in that environment. We could go back to the same location another time and have a completely different experience BUT we have to be honest! And as you guys know we've had the best time in India so far... BUT when you are travelling, things can feel a bit overwhelming and uncomfortable. It is what it is I'm afraid, please don't take it personally. I know most of you will understand 🖤🖤 🖤

India can be overwhelming for Indians also. Lack of civic sense and hygiene is the biggest challenge. It’s an organised chaos or it’s life in a random motion. Democracy at its extreme. One has to adapt but some places can be impossible to adapt

My grandparents are from Varkala! Its a shame , so much litters and making dirty, such a beautiful place. The locals, the restaurant owners, could keep an eye on people who litter there and if they do let them clean/ take it away! I mean each and every shack; restaurant owner can make an effort to get angry at people who throw rubbish on the ground. I remember the day I was at Kovalam restaurant, guests next to our table were smoking and putting the ash on the ground , though there was an Ash tray. The waiter came and gave a speech, which I almost applauded. Do you do this at your home???he asked in Malayalam!!

The reference to Tibetans, not very sure why, but I think its probably due to the different kinds of clothes and accessories that you get in those shops. They are not locally made. We can see similar shops around kovalam beach as well. It maybe that the Tibetans had come over and set up these shops at tourist places.

Now tourist places are much dirtier than pre-covid times, because the kind of tourists that these places receive changed. Before covid, many more western people would visit, and they don't litter. Post covid, people from the north of India, Tamil Nadu and Kerala itself started visiting in much greater number, and many such people, unfortunately, litter everywhere. I, too, was disappointed visiting Varkala post covid, especially because I remember how beautiful it once was. There's also loud music is frequent now, which wasn't common before.

I was browsing youtube, searching for any vlogs/ videos on Varkala as I miss it very much. I agree all the littering and rubbish around is a problem, and to be honest, sad to see. The last time I was there, my partner and I got together with a couple of friends (foreign and local) and cleaned the beach, I tried my absolute most to pick up the trash as I saw it. But it's not enough as this is a much more complex issue.
Anyway, it's a shame you didn't have the experience you expected, but in all fairness that area is really big on yoga, ayurvedic treatments, and people having what you called "a hippie" lifestyle. I'm glad you went and maybe got to understand your deal breakers and needs a little better.

I think despite with all the open heart and mind it is still a bit difficult to feel comfortable with a bit different sanitary standards to what we are used in Europe, no matter how You love the place and the people there. Thanks for sharing, i am going to partially live in Varkala few months in a year so i hope sth is going to break through in me and will be able to fully enjoy the beauty of the place 🥰 My husband is from India and despite he is a very well educated men from a wealthy family in India, also he has been living for around 10 years in Europe i notice a big difference in attitude towards what is men and women duties in the family. He is partially doing things at home and with the kids becouse it would be completely unacceptable in my culture if he didn't . Despite he is a modern european indian still the power of the cultural background is very strong, even stronger then he would like to admit to himself, before i underestimated such things but now i dont. And it is good feedback so they can attract more western tourists who, let's face it, do bring in a lot more money. Most domestic tourists live with large number of people in a hotel room and so it is difficult to keep it clean too. I have a phobia for other people's dirt. India, for tourists from abroad who are travelling on a budget, is still a work in progress. Having said that, Kerala is still one of the cleanest places in the country, and the 'good' choices in that state are still the most, compared to all others.

I understand. It's not like you not need to say it. You should say it like more often so that people could have that mindset to clean their surroundings as even people coming from other countries are complaining about cleanliness.

I love India but India needs a ground up and top-down culture change about keeping itself tidy. The home is the temple so all rubbish can be thrown out on the streets. Plastic pollution can be seen everywhere and compared to all countries I have travelled to so far India has the highest levels of this. Also, having clean bathrooms is a luxury in India. So don't apologize you are tolerant and humble to the experience this is what matters.

We are staying in a guest house and the standard compared to the west is lot lower (so are the prices) that being said people, food and sunshine make up all the short comings. Hope you find your upgrade bit better and perhaps we can bum into each other on the cliff for coffee 😉 😜

I don't think it's a problem to wear revealing clothes in India because we do too. Its our personal choice but you know what the older generations don't kind of support but peoples views are changing. Its just that people stare at you and that feels weird.
Btw I am from North East hope you will visit here Its much more cleaner and the weather is cold too. I hope you will visit the greener sides of India 💚

      Wear any dresses in India??
      No one stops you??
What about the extreme uncomfortable lecherous stares??
& then be catcalled or even raped in some cases??
      No, thank you.
Also, before you think I am a foreigner. I am an Indian female!

    • @real_gaurav4140

@@anonymously5367 go check rape per capita. You'll know india is not even in top 40s. Although it is a big problem 🙂 I'm not denying it
I was born in a small district from east U.P. and whenever I go there. I see girls are wearing shorts freely.
The dress is not the problem but the upbringing is of those stalkers.
And if you really want to know how open our society used to be then go visit an old temple which was built before Islamic invaders came. You'll know our society used to be the most liberal one like the west but after invaders came it changed because of mass murders and rapes.
Edit:- we need to take the stand.
We need to reform our Societies and it is getting reformed. So don't worry

@Oye it's Rish I did mention somewhere else that I know about other countries where rapes are common, but we are talking about India right now & also, two wrongs never make a right.
It is OBVIOUSLY the upbrining. It is the mothers who raise their sons wrong.
I am a female living in Delhi & I hate the stares. I wish you were a female to know how it feels. It feels like you are roaming around naked (even when you aren't wearing anything much revealing) in a place full of vile animals waiting to pounce on you any minute. I've been around europe & the US & honestly never felt this atleast in those two continents.
Do watch the video of the korean female who was sexually harrassed by two men in mumbai. Let's not bring religion here please. We as a nation need to change. Period!!

@@anonymously5367 ikr! We need change in our Societies and i did mention the stares are still a big problem 😃 i get it 🙂 i also have a sis😐 but things are changing slowly. It may take some time but will eventually be better. You girls need to unite and speak it out like european girls do that. A law is already there(stare more than 14 sec will be considered as a crime) but if you need more strict laws🙂 then you girls need to unite and ask for it.

@@anonymously5367 i did watch that korean's video. But she was also saved by a boy named arthava and was helped by a boy named Aditya to file the police complaint. So please understand not everyboy is like those stalkers. Things are changing. So please give it some time.
Education and upbringing these 2 things can cure this problem and also the strict laws🤷🏻‍♂️

If you do not feel good about a place you must express it clearly which you have done it here. Especially, if the females of the party or group do not feel good, we should not ignore it and leave the place whatever the state of the situation. Everything won't be perfect all the time.

People of Indian cities should learn from "Hong Kong" about cleanliness. Hong Kong is also a densely populated city like Mumbai and Delhi but much better than delhi, mumbai or any other Indian city in terms of cleanliness.😞

Thank you for visiting India. Let me settle this debate that has been going on in Eleise's mind once and for all. India is not an Islamic country. All cultures are openly welcome here with a Namaskar. You can literally move to India and wear whatever you like unless it is something extreme. Even then, nobody will actually say anything to you. People might stare tho. All views and opinions are listened to with a broad mindset. Even if you wanted to bad-mouth India, we would completely understand you. We are really sorry that India is not the best in terms of cleanliness and we try to work hard and make it up for by our humble behaviour. But lately, we can clearly see that's not going to work and we really need to uplift or standards for hygiene over here.

I also have something to tell , many foreigner come here and complain about so many things but people in india are very hospitable and caring but the same thing we are not getting in other countries .When we go to foreign country as a foreigner then we find that people are not so supportive and hospitable .You will find incident where a foreigner spited on the face of indian and telling them to go back to your country .Many jobless foreigners cone to India and start their youtube vlogging journey from here everyone knows why so I think you people should not be very judgy
