As a bartender I love my job, what's not to love, you get to hang out with your friends, have a shot here and there, meet interesting people, get a lot of phone numbers, and you get paid?! The only truth to this is when all the chairs are up and people are still siting at the bar, and you are trying very hard to be respectful of their good time, but also reminding them that I have been here for 14 hours, and it's 3am we closed at 2am :/. If the chairs go up, sadly that means we closed awhile ago and you really need to leave so I can mop haha.

I don't know what's wrong with asking for a recommended drink. I was at a bar recently where I asked what they recommended and the guy said "I've got one for you. Something I've been working on. Tell me what you think." The same guy later gave us a rather large glass of expensive rum after we watched his fiery performance involving a vacuum tube and a glass cover over said glass of rum. He even sat down with us, had a drink himself, and told us a little about the history of that particular rum house.
Yeah, dude that's a rum house, not a bar. If the crowd is 3 deep at the bar, have your order ready before you even leave your seat to come to the bar. Otherwise, I don't really have the time to entertain your indecisiveness, and probably will just give you a vodka coke. Midweek, yeah, I can recommend a good whiskey, gin, rum, or cocktail and be happy to make it but at the weekend, you just can't be 'that guy' that holds everyone up. Rum houses, wineries, and craft beer bars cater to a quieter, pickier audience, so those kinda recommendations are expected.

@@hatchjustin Even if they don't have a drink menu, they will have beer taps on display and the bottles of alcohol they have in a clear fridge for customers to view. If nothing else at least tell me what you like so that I can narrow down your choices.
There are so many videos and articles out there like this written by bartenders who make fun of their customers and the drinks they order. I'm beginning to think that bartenders think anyone who walks into their bars are assholes.

Most of us, if we want to stay employed for any length of time, are Not gonna act like some bad late night comic in a dive. Behave and treat us like you'd want to be treated and you'll be fine.

TheYuxiaodi How do I ACT like I've been in a bar, if I've never been in a bar? I do not typically drink alcohol, I fail to see why it is unreasonable to ask someone, who knows a hell of a lot more about drinks than I do, for suggestions.
It isn't unreasonable not to drink alcohol, it is unreasonable to ask for a recommendation when the bartender obviously knows nothing about you or your preference in flavours. Also, the question is a trap of sorts since recommending one sends the signal that others are sub par which is (probably) not the case.
The question is pretty much the same as "what's good" which (again) suggests that some things on the aren't.
As for how to act like you've been in a bar before.. you needn't... just think before you ask! (not much to ask is it?)
As a bartender
-No, we don’t judge you because of your drink choice
-You’re totally allowed to tell me how you like your drink (strong, sweet, etc.)
-Just cause you’re a bartender does it mean you gave up on your dreams, to be a bartender you need to study, take courses and practice a lot, it’s an art, not just a summer job
-If you don’t know what to drink just ask, we’ll gladly advice you and recommend something

No it's more like because it's just a terrible drink, and we know you're getting it to either get wasted as fast as possible, or because you think it's "cool." Just because you put 7 things in it does not mean it's good, trust me, there are other drinks like that that taste much better

What if I actually trust the opinion of the person working in the bar as to what drinks are nice there? Why is that considered rude?
The thing is: every drink is nice to someone. People have different and all kinds of taste and the drink the bartender likes, will not always be something you like and if you trust the opinion of the bartender and you don't like the drink, you get upset, blame them and complain about paying for a drink you didn't like.
It's annoying because we're not psychic and we don't know what you like! That's entirely your choice. Menus are so varied and I'm not playing 'quess what a person might like' only for it to not be what you like and get complaints, all while I have 12 other people waving cards at me.
Millennials are so insecure they can't just tell you what they like. Their mind fills with convoluted ideas of who you are why people drink and if you'll actually enjoy what they recommend. They do all that instead of just making the first thing that pops in to their head

Its not annoying, I get asked this all the time and you just gotta bounce the question back. So you say 'well, what sort of flavours do you like? Sweet or sour? Strong or weak? Fruity? You just have to be willing to go the extra mile and help them figure out what is good for them!
Being a bartender AND not losing your cool is very hard work.

On the opposite end of the argument, some people love bartending, do it well, and don't complain even to themselves. My sister was a bartender for years and genuinely enjoyed it.

As a bartender most of these can be true but it just depends on the day. Sometimes inconsiderate customers are all you get and this video is very accurate. Other days you meet fantastic people and actually enjoy pouring them drinks and talking with them.
