    It there clear rule to this pronunciation so we can apply it for other words?

    • @SpeechModification
      @SpeechModification  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, there are patterns in pronunciation that apply other places, but often there will be exceptions to the rule. Was there a part of these words in particular you were wondering about?

    Do you pronounce gentleman and gentlemen the same way?

    • @SpeechModification
      @SpeechModification  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, yes, we tend to say those words with a reduced vowel in the final syllable, so rather than a contrasting man /mæn/ and men /mɛn/, they have /mən/ or /mn/. I plan to cover this topic in a future video.

    • @slumbers
      @slumbers 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SpeechModification Thank you for your reply! I have another curiosity, nowadays when I hear people speak online, I hear a more DH sound instead of TH when they say words like 'the' or others words that start with TH in the middle or the start of sentences.

    • @SpeechModification
      @SpeechModification  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@slumbers Hi, do you mean you hear the voiced TH /ð/? Or that it sounds more like a "d" sound? Here's some help for TH sounds: th-cam.com/play/PLJXFLCasjYl6y4EZt5fR-uajcdgKIHgPS.html

    I just wonder the pronunciation of "z" when it placed at the end of the words. the ending z sounds like "s". but you said z sound. Whenever I hear the ending z sound, but always it sounds like "s" sound to me. my ear is a problem? sorry for bad English

    • @SpeechModification
      @SpeechModification  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's probably partly your ear, and partly that we don't use a strong "z" sound or hold it for a long time in connected speech. But you should be able to hear that a phrase like "was it" sounds like "whazzit" and not "wass it," because when we link words the z sound is more clear. You might find this video helpful for final z: th-cam.com/video/Lcy4rUuShf8/w-d-xo.html.

    Nice technique! I love how perfectly you pronounce it! But say, how about writing "Jan no man" for gentlemen? Wouldn't it be easier for foreign students to understand? Plus, it's fun and funny! Right?

    • @SpeechModification
      @SpeechModification  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for your comment! Yes, that's a funny way to write it, but it's not exactly what we say. But if it helps you to remember and pronounce it correctly, then it's a good strategy for you.

    •  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SpeechModification maybe "gen" instead of Jan? Gen o men? But saying it fast!

    • @SpeechModification
      @SpeechModification  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's close, but without the L it will probably sound a little off.
