Classic rock, progressive rock, psychedelic rock, hard rock, jazz, blues, folk, country, soul…all genres are fair game. From time to time we may dabble in other popular culture, such as film, history or sports. But music is primarily what we do here. The focus is on the music and the artists. We hope to encourage an open and dynamic community with fun and informative discussions not only in the videos, but also in the comments section. I fully agree with your assessment that Sweetheart is not really a rock album at all. It is a country album delivered by a rock band, and there really isn't anything rock about it at all. Therein lies it's charm for me. I have always loved this album. I caught a lot of flack for that from friends, throughout the late 60's and early 70's, until the genre became more acceptable over time. In this respect it really is a groundbreaking album that I've continued to listen to, and I appreciate it more and more as the years roll by. It is a far superior album than much of the dross that followed it's example (Pure Prairie League, New Riders of the Purple Sage, etc). I like Gram Parsons' vocal versions of the original songs best as well. Agree that Easy Rider is an underrated, beautiful album. Easily the best from the latter day line up; and truthfully, the only record that rivals the output from the original line up. I quite enjoy every song on it. I rate Notorious their best ever too. I love Crosby's contributions to the record, but I'm actually glad that Triad didn't make the album. I like the record as is.

    Great video. Broadly agree with your ranking, except I would have Sweetheart as no.4 (only bettered by 1. Notorious, 2. Younger and 3. Dimension).
    Yeah the remastered sound on the CDs is well worth having and there are loads of extras on the Untitled CD reissue especially. There's a deluxe CD reissuing of Sweetheart too which is awesome.
    I didn't know about that Preflight/Flyte? album, so will check it out. I don't have the last 3 albums either, although I saw Réunion has been reissued so I might check it out for the Clark songs and Young covers. I love Clark's solo work especially White Light and of course No Other.

      10 11 and 12 were bottom of the barrel for the band as far as studio recordings. Their live shows were the cream of the crop though...always! ♐

    I still remember hearing Mr Tambourine Man blasting out of large (for the time) speakers at Lakeside Amusement Park, in Denver, May, 1965. I was an instant fan, following the band through Turn! Turn! Turn!, Eight Miles High, and So You Wanna Be a Rock 'n' Roll Star, to My Back Pages, Renaissance Fair, and Goin' Back. The hard country sound of Sweetheart of the Rodeo was jarring, but the blah sound of Dr Byrds and Mr Hyde left m cold. To make matter worse, the best thing on the LP was Drug Store Truck Drivin' Man, something that could have, but wouldn't have been, played on any Country station in the land. I was still rockin', only marginally interested in anything Country, at the time. By Untitled, the sound had evolved into something I could relate to, but the band was on its last legs. Roger McGuinn disbanded the last version in late 1972. The death of Clarence White, who had brightened the Byrds from Dr Byrds on, in July 1973, and the lackluster reunion album that year, ended any chance of a rebirth.

    You´re right. Some of the albums are real magical, mainly due to Gary Ushers production. Don´t miss the 2 fantastic Gary Usher interviews on TH-cam, really mindblowing stuff !

    Your ranking of Sweetheart of the Rodeo is probably too high in my opinion, actually. I, like you, am baffled by the super-high praise for the record. A straight up country record. Not very Byrd-like to my ears.

    The Byrds are a top five 60's band for me. I'll do a video on them at some point. I like all the Byrds' albums. My two favorite songs on the reunion album are the David Crosby songs. I'm in the minority but I think Dr Byrds and Mr Hyde is better than Sweetheart Of The Rodeo. I think people that put Sweetheart Of The Rodeo at number one aren't really Byrds fans. Your list is similar to what mine would be.

      I look forward to seeing your Byrds video. Totally agree on Sweetheart of the Rodeo. I don't get the worship. To me, it is a solid country record. On the reunion album, Crosby even recycled "Laughing," which was better on his solo debut.

      Sweetheart of the Rodeo is all based on Gram Parsons romanticism; from review readers, as opposed to music listeners. Great as it is, it’s roughly 3/4 cover versions, and absolutely nowhere near Notorious Byrd Brothers’ league.

    I agree, sweethart of the rodio is not very great as I was never a "Parsons" admirer. As for Country Rock, their earlier albums had more "Good" country rock in many places... but, overall I would rank it about 11.

    Do you consider Turn Turn Turn to be 5-star album along with those you ranked 1-4? Just curious. I believe on all your other album ranking videos you have declared something to the effect of "everything from here up is 5 stars".

    It was Lee Hazelwood who demanded (almost) all of Parsons vocals be wiped off of Sweetheart. (Guys are always signing contracts.)

    • @margaretross9150

      Gary Usher said that this issue was settled by the lawyers and that the band was afraid it was going to be a "Gram Parsons album." So they made the switch to Roger's vocals. Roger butchered The Christian Life, and Gram wrote One Hundred Years and should have sung it, so IMO not a good decision.

      Wasn’t aware of that. Either way, I’m happy that the original versions with Gram’s vocal were preserved and released on digital editions. So that’s how I listen to it.

    With all due respect to the Beatles, the Byrds introduced the world to 12-string electric guitar with their first album.

    • @daledavidson8242
      @daledavidson8242 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not quite. George Harrison received the 2nd 12 string electric that Rickenbacker made from the company’s president. He used it on the Hard Days Night album, while McGuinn was still playing folky acoustic. Roger (Jim) got the idea of using that guitar from George’s sound.

    • @rmoriart7655
      @rmoriart7655 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@daledavidson8242 Agree. My point was that the 12-string electric guitar was far more prominent in the Byrds’ sound from the get-go. Harrison’s usage was much more sporadic (Ticket to Ride, etc.) at that time (‘65).
