Great video, changed mine (04 reg Passat) on the weekend following these steps, only took 30 minutes. Couple of suggestions/clarifications though:
    1) To unclip the fuel pipes you need to push the base of the connector inwards towards the pipes center, not downwards as the video seems to show.
    2) Once you've swapped the plastic seal from the old pump to the new one and inserted the new pump loosely into the fuel tank, don't try and seat the pump and seal into the tank together. Rather hold the pump a couple of inches out of the tank and maneuver the seal into place by itself, the pump then easily drops straight in with no further fiddling.
    Thanks again.

I know this comment is a few years old now but wanted to say thanks for your second suggestion. I had the seal on the pump and it wasn't sitting right so I couldn't get the ring to screw on. Read your comment then 5 minutes later all done, engine running, so cheers!

Very useful and clear. It helped me change the unit on a Seat Leon Mk2. The only significant difference was the way the 2 fuel connecters had to be released. There is a not-very-obvious push-in piece at the base of each connector which releases the connection. It's blue on one which makes it easier to spot. I also agree that the advise to buy the whole unit is very wise.

26th December 2022. Just replaced on a 2006 VW Polo 1.4 tdi. Very good video and took 30 mins from start to finish. The only problem I had was unplugging the electrical plug. I just took a picture of the original before removing so I knew exactly how to put back in.

If you're having trouble getting the pump back into the hole with the rubber seal. At 5.38 push the seal into the hole first and apply a smear of grease onto the plastic top's mating surface, before pushing home, works.

In most of VAG Group cars there is a arrow on pump and corresponding arrow on cars body (within round hole).
To get it 100% right both arrows need to line up.

He's not wrong about getting the whole unit if you can afford it. Swapping pump only or even a pump & basket is a real pain in the arse. It might be worth getting a new O ring gasket too... I think over time the old one expands which is why it becomes so difficult to get it back in.

My car just went off out the blue then started some time later itself downhill. I changed the fuel filter after. Few days ago it happen again, seemed like there was no diesel in the car, but it did. I topped it up more and called the R.A.C the mechanic sprayed something in the pipe he took off and told me to start it. It started then when I switch the car off, it would not start again. It had to be recovered home. Yesterday I took off the pump electric plug and took off one fuel line. Diesel started to come out I then put it back on and the switch as I had the wrong pump in the boot. I thought when I get the correct one I will know how to take it off and have some practice. I then checked all the fuses one by one, they were all good. I tried to start it and it did after few attempts, it never switched off I let the car running till the heaters got hot then turned it off. Since then car has been fine. Would anyone know why the car is doing such thing. Is it a faulty fuel pump that works sometimes and gives up. Seat ibiza 1.9tdi Fr 05reg

    • @Phoenix_cataclysm_in_2040

There's a strainer attached to the fuel pump intake pipe tip to keep sediment bits from being sucked into the pump itself and then being sent further down the fuel pipe. Otherwise it's just a normal fuel filter - wherever it is located in your car.
