  • Have you been wanting to practise your English by reading the news that native speakers read, but always get stuck on the BBC and don't know what else to try?
In this video I go through the main British newspapers in order from what I think are the easiest to the hardest in terms of the language used. Hope you find it useful!

As a media lecturer in Malaysia and also an English teacher at a local tuition centre, you have given me a succinct introduction to British press for my high school and uni students. Thanks very very much for taking the time to produce this video.

    我在英国念书和工作的时候养成了读报纸的习惯(我本科学校的老师推荐的),基本跟Susie介绍的很相似。我的老师非常不建议我看Daily Mail和The Sun,哈哈哈,他说会damage my brain。他说英国还有一部分上层阶级的人喜欢读Perspective。现在维持跟英国的了解和国际政治,读的比较多的是Guardian和Finantial Times。BBC比较特殊,要注意BBC International是不受Ofcom监管的,跟英国本土的BBC的标准和政治倾向都是不一样的,这个读political science的同学要注意会区分。

Thanks very much Susie this episode is really useful. It seems the tabloids have more down-to-earth, daily life real English, rather than those school English or intellectual English. They could be good for language learning if we can bear in mind that never take the stories seriously and believe in what they say.

Thank you very much for sharing so many useful newspapers with us English learners. The BBC was the only British newspaper I knew and read, but now I am glad there are a lot more options open to me!
There is one thing I am really curious about--- the way your pronounce "reputable." I've looked it up in the dictionary, checked American and British pronunciations, and found the stress seems to be on the first syllable instead of the second. I am not sure if both pronunciations are acceptable, or the dictionary I use offers the wrong one. Thanks:)

The FT also has a 'listen to the article' function in their app, which is quite useful for those commute journeys.
Although the FT is quite neutral most of the time, like all Western media outlets certain degree of Western-centric ideology or mindset is expressed from time to time. It's therefore important for a reader - especially those from non-Western background - to retain independent and critical thinking and not get swayed inadvertently.

Thanks for your introduction! I personally don't read these tabloids and broadsheets that much. However, I do think tabloids play an important role in exposing corruption within the elite circles. That is true in the Sun, Daily Mail, or their counterparts in America and Germany such as the New York Post and Bild. As for English news, I find the Spectator, the Critic, Unherd, and the Article really fascinating. Do you have more recommendations?

最适合的是主流媒体观点中立偏左的BBC , 小报的话可以读daily mail 各种八卦和社会新闻,the sun ,metro 观点中立可以作为facts的索取来源; the guardian 都是专业记者写的文章,适合高端一点的读者,扩展思维。independent 都是长文,适合高端学者。The times 有点类似于BBc , the telegraph 短文居多,the financial times 扩展知识面的不二选择,观点中立,非常适合阅读。the economists 非常中立,非常理性和易读。
