- New Contra NES any% WR for Angrylanks by ~1 frame (as of July 2017). DK28's 9:53.8 was achieved nearly 2 years prior, back when he had virtually zero competition, which made it a seemingly untouchable record until Angrylanks came along with a mission to challenge it. Lanks run was way off pace at the start (as seen in the video), but thanks to the leap of faith in Energy Zone and some clutch saves, he came back to take the record. He split slightly late and since his run was so far off at the beginning, he was very stunned at his time. DK, on the other hand, knew he'd just broken his own WR and gotten the world's first 9:53, hence his perfect reaction. These are the only two 9:53 runs ever at this time.

Awesome to see how Angrylanks slowly closed the gap in the last couple stages. Great comparison video!
It's all about that jump on the lower level of Stage 6 that Lanks reacted to when he hit it. That jump is a huge road block to prevent this new WR from being broken again for a long time.
DK would call that the 'yolo jump' back when he was streaming his attempts for that 9:53. He'd never go for it unless he was behind time. It's a coin toss that instantly ends the attempt. If you're on WR pace and you lose that coin toss, it could tank your morale for the rest of the night.
DK's 9:53 without the jump is so perfect that it basically meant any subsequent WR pulls would require using it.
That's what Lanks was up against. Completely nuts he got this.

After base 2, ever after stage 5, I was like: How the hell does angrylank catch up? Even tho I knew the outcome I didn't believe how tas level his execution was after base 2.
Got Lucky with that jump in Energy stage. Got lucky on Junping Joey also! And probably killed stage 7 boss earlier.

Based on the youtube frame advance (which seems to be at 30 fps), angrylanks's first frame of the cutscene at 10:14 appears on screen 2 frames earlier, but obviously that could be anything. I realize that cutscene isn't the end point of the run, too.
Bismuth There's rng in the game from menu to character control, so it's possible there is on the other end, too. Syncing these up wasn't necessarily exact either, although I did my best. Demonstration purposes only.

how do they fire bullets in burst of 2 and 3 with S
The game only puts a certain number of spread bullets on the screen at once, so if you shoot it in the proper rhythm, you can get only the center most bullets to fire. Watch how they aim and mash.
mcaaronice I understand that only a certain number of bullets can be on screen once but when I single tap with s a stream of 5 bullets come out on the first burst whereas their initial burst is 2-3 bullets
You're seeing a result of their capture (and this video) being in 30 fps. The sprites every other frame of the 60 fps game and look invisible (in the same way that angrylanks's character is invisible when the game begins). There's more bullets on screen that can be seen in the video.

aftonet theoretically yes. At least Angrylanks's sum of best is better than that. He also is working on a new base 2 boss strat that would make 9:49 very possible if it can be made consistent.
