Many British artists in the 60s and 70s used to emulate American music and as such would mimic the accent while singing too. It became the cool thing to do after that. There's lots of artists who let their accent come through though, Damon Albarn and King Krule are pretty good examples.
It also probably because when your singing it feels more natural to elongate words especially when singing to something which requires expression, americans seem to elongate certain parts of words when talking especially compared to english people.
yeah seems logical. would have liked to hear that British accent when sung though, something about it just sounds cooler. Maybe cause it's not as common. I wonder if he does this on purpose
