  • I have teamed up with Carolina Craftsman Kits to help design a HO scale kit called "Raymond Transfer". This is the first in a series of three kits that can be combined to make one large structure. In this episode I will show you techniques for creating effects such as pealed paint, rusted metal, and aged tar paper for roofing. Hope you enjoy the video and happy modeling everyone!!!

Your videos start out with you standing in front of your well organized clean work bench!
Or is that a back ground prop?
and the real work bench looks like Casey Jones derailment or like my work bench!

So if you win the contest, you get one portion of the mill and if you want the entire mill you hafta buy the other 2 kits at full price? That’s a hell of a contest! LOL

The costs involved in model building. This started not as a rant but a question concerning pricing. The more I thought about the economics of the business the more I realized that I hadn't thought as deeply as I thought about it. Please read the following.
I would think that with desktop laser cutters the price of craftsman kits should have dropped significantly. Maybe they have. I'm really not sure. Yes, the laser cutters aren't necessarily cheap but they have to be alot cheaper than machine cutting especially with dies. Also one needs to remember the line I used to tell people I worked with, "it's a business, not a charity". The kit manufacturer has his costs, plus he and his wife/partner and kids if any need to eat, wear shoes etc.
Mind you I'm not really complaining here. I'm just not familiar with the economics involved here.
But if one doesnt want to pay for a kit, theres always the option of scratchbuilding. That however is not always as cheap as one might think. The people who mill Basswood, Spruce lumber and sell structure details (windows, doors etc) have to eat too. Plus the online retailer or the owner of the LHS eat too. If you think about it the supply chain for a structure kit, be it plastic or a craftsman type is deeper than we think. Just for strip lumber it stretches from the guy cutting the tree down, through the rough sawing, the drying, the milling to size, the saws*, the blades, the packaging, transportation costs which include vehicles, vehicle maintenance and depreciation, fuel, licensing, tires, etc. Plus packaging. It's a wonder that one can actually walk into a craft store, hobby shop or even a big box store and pick up a random bag of strip stock for 5 or 6 bucks. Consider windows. For plastic ones. Start with designing the injection molding tooling. Producing the tooling. Molding the parts, bagging, labels, shipping and advertising. Don't forget that. If nobody knows about your product all the previous work is wasted.
And note I haven't said anything about paints, adhesives, hobby tools, brushes. And we are not even into actual railroad related things, trackwork, motive power, rolling stock etc.
*this adds a whole different supply process starting with the ore coming out of the ground
    Nice work by the way

Jason, another great build. A couple of questions - why did you switch to dark to light? on coloring/painting/etc. Another is why random sized roof pieces? (I asked this on prior episode). I thought they came standard sizing like 4x8 ply. I just haven't figured out why on sheet metal that it would change, Finally from a recent video I noticed you changed from AK rust colors to paint. Is there a reason? One better than the other or just to change it up like you did piers? Again thanks for sharing learning a lot from you!

I try to watch your videos, but I just can't. Between you voice and the fact that you don't show what you're doing they are unwatchable. If your adding braces, then show it. Don't just make them magically appear. You can always use time lapse after the first couple. If you want a successful channel I suggest you invest in a quality mic and learn from some of the other channels. One of my favorites is Luke Towan. Believe it or not people actually like to watch model building videos.

@@JasonJensenTrains Thanks for the reply Jason. I don't want you to be like his channel either and that wasn't my point. My point was I would like to see you actually do the work instead of it just being done. I'm one that actually enjoys watching someone actually build models. Hopefully you can show more of that in future videos, I think you would be surprised how many people enjoy it. Have a great day.

You are one of the best kitbasher I've seen. CCK chose the perfect person to design a kit for them. Your talent is by far above and beyond what most can accomplish. This kit looks awesome and you've done a wonderful job making it come together and look so good. The flat metal was a very different effect and looked great. The way you colored the metal was perfect. It's so enjoyable to watch you do these kits and see how your artistic mind gets them to come together so nicely. Great job Jason. Thanks for sharing. I am working on a SerraWest Craftsmen kit and I have learned a lot from you that I am using. As I have learned from tv artists and am doing now is to be lose which gives better results. I stumbled on a new trick by accident, I needed some super glue and all they had was some max hold that was black and it works as tar around roof patches and chimneys and vents, just a small circle of glue and then the vent shack and it looks great. I'm not a pro like you but thought I'd share. God Bless Ya and Merry Christmas to you and yours Dave
