Karen Carpenter is easily in the top 5 greatest female voices of all time. I grew up listening to the Carpenters, and they're still one of my favorites. I just wish Karen had been able to see the beautiful woman everyone else saw when she looked at herself in the mirror. She was a month shy of her 33rd birthday when she passed away on February 4, 1983. Rest in peace, Karen Carpenter 💖

Amen……I’m a 65yr old guy who grew up as a teen in the 70’s. I was a high school band geek and we played this song and other Carpenter songs in concerts. I believe she had the best voice in music, male or female. It was heartbreaking to see her body fail her due to the eating disorder. You’re right though……She just couldn’t “see” how beautiful she was.

this song was written originally by famed composers burt bacharach and hal david but it didn't do much. richard carpenter tried re-arranging and recording it. richard also added that wee piano bit at the start and the carpenters version became the huge hit. richard's amazing arranging and production ability is as responsible for their success as karen's gorgeous voice.
Agree with that. Richard Carpenter was very underrated. Or his contribution was. Very good piano player and also a very good arranger.

I remember sitting in the back of my Dad's 70 Oldsmobile Cutlass listening to this song on the AM radio when it was first released. Even with the windows cranked open, (no power windows) and the static and the reception fading in and out, I thought this was the sweetest voice I had ever heard in my short life. Those were some peaceful days for me, even though the world was in turmoil with the Vietnam war, civil unrest and high crime, and one reason were songs like these. I wish you guys could relive those days with me, so I could show you around and experience a time when music was real, and artists were unencumbered by auto-tune and MTV.
Paul McCartney once said that she had "the best female voice in the world: melodic, tuneful, and distinctive". Quite a ringing endorsement. This, of course, was before Whitney and Celine. Peace.

I loved watching your reaction to her. Watching you smile from ear to ear was awesome. She had the most peaceful tone to her voice. So soothing. She passed away too young. Anorexia is a horrible way to go.
Karen died of heart failure. According to government standards, she was in the "healthy" weight range (low end) for her height when she died (5 ft 4 in., 108 lbs.). Substance abuse led to her heart damage. Anorexia led to dieting and the reckless measures she chose in an effort to be thin created the health issue that eventually killed her. She was the best female singer I've heard in my life.

they were so big back in the day and this is when Hard Rock was everywhere. I got a chance to see them perform this live in Chicago-Karen had such a great voice and her brother Richard wrote all their music-Help Alpert produced them and got them their start. great documentary on them on PBS. Although Richard wrote some of the music, most of their bigger hits were not written by them like this song for example, written by Burt Bacharach.
Other than the occasional cover, like the Beatles' "Ticket To Ride" from their first album, along w/ hits like: "Rainy Days and Mondays" & "Superstar". Fortunately, they did not cover Bobby Darin's "If I Were a Carpenter".

Frank Sinatra was asked once in an interview if he liked Karen's singing. He said she was the only female singer (at that time) that he would pay to see perform live. There are just 2 Carpenters Asia. If you really want to see Karen at her best and happiest, check out a video called Karen Carpenter drum solo. She has been listed as an outstanding drummer. As beautiful as her voice was, she liked to call herself "a drummer who sings".

All the harmonies were dubbed by Richard and Karen. Karen would sing different octaves. BTW, she was known as one-take Karen. She would whisper the words to herself on the way to the studio. She'd sing it once, and it was gold. Unbelievable talent. And she was an awesome drummer who never wanted to sing in the first place. She was more or less "forced" to sing once everyone heard her velvety voice. She was smart too. She said that the money is in the basement. Meaning her contralto voice. Probably the most naturally born talent as a singer period. At least for me. I never tire of her voice and shy demeanor.

Karen also played drums on all the tracks of this album. She used to play drums and sing simultaneously live with such ease and no mistakes. There is a live performance video of her playing this song while singing and I wish they had used it. She was so talented, what a loss.
Hal Blaine played drums on most of the studio recordings and she would usually only play drums live on the lesser known songs so as to be out front and visible for the more popular songs.
My grandma died in '76 when I was almost 8. She was a saint who believed in Jesus and lived it every day of her life. The kindest and most compassionate person you could know who, even though she was from the South, was everybody's friend, and treated everyone with respect.
She always had the radio going, and the Carpenters were all over it the years up to her death. Some of my best memories were at her place with all the cousins running wild and of course the radio on.. We loved her so much that 45 years after her death we can hardly talk about her without tearing up. When she died alot of things died with her. Though the Carpenters are not my go to group, when I hear them I remember her (and generally tear up pretty quickly). Always glad to hear them though.

I love the video of this song where Karen is playing the drums. Although almost everyone talks about Karen's fabulous voice (and her skill on the drums) her brother Richard is often neglected. He arranged their songs and although most were written by others his arrangements set them apart from other versions.
I saw them in concert many times and they sounded just as amazing live. Karen played drums for some songs, but the ballads she stood up to sing. My biggest thrill was snaking backstage after a show in 1975 and got their autograph. They were both so nice. R.I.P Karen.

This was written by the songwriting team of Burt Bacharach and Hal David. It was originally released as the B-side of "Blue Guitar" by Richard Chamberlain in 1963
Richard Carpenter said of recording this song: "He (Herb Alpert) just gave me a lead sheet, and he said, 'I have a recording of this, but I don't want you to hear it. I don't want anything to influence what I may come up with. Just keep, at the end of the first bridge, two piano quintuplets.' That record, that song, the arrangement, all of it, is misleading to the uninitiated, because it sounds simple. And it's anything but simple.
In their first sessions for this song, Karen Carpenter played the drums, which Alpert didn't like. Said the producer: "I thought it was a little light. And so I asked them to go back in the studio again, because Karen was playing drums. And they recorded it the second time and I still felt they were missing a little something on the groove, so I suggested very carefully to Karen that maybe Hal Blaine should come in and play drums on it."
Blaine replaced Karen on drums and they got the take they liked with Richard on piano, Joe Osborn on bass, and Karen singing.
The trumpet part in the middle of the song didn't come easy: Richard had a very specific sound in mind, and had multiple trumpets trying to play it, which wasn't working because each trumpet was playing slightly different. Chuck Findley solved the problem by playing all the parts himself, then layering them together to create the elusive sound Richard wanted.

The Carpenter's had their own familiar sound in many of their songs. It was something they created and attracted people to their music. Many music groups have the same thing.
I was in my early to mid teens when they were topping the charts. I had albums I listened to at home and cassettes for my Boom Box when I was walking around town, just hanging out. (you could do that back then). The Carpenters were amazing.

The most angelic voice of the 70s. The Carpenters were sometimes viewed as too sappy, but their music is timeless. Most people don't know that there is another totally different song of the same name. It's a funk-reggae style by a singer named Maxi Priest. Like I said, DIFFERENT from this one but it's a 🔥groove! Back in the old days, the vocal harmony notes were always below the melody. The theory being you don’t want to overshadow the melody. Then in the 60s groups like CSN&Y started stacking the harmonies on top of the melody. The Carpenters brought it back to that old school of harmonizing. That’s why their harmonies sound so beautifully rich.

The sound was a trumpet played by the great Herb Alpert-famous trumpeteer of the 60s who had many hits with the Tijuana brass (Tijuana Taxi, A Taste Of Honey and whipped Cream to name a few). He also had hits Rise, rotation, Route 101 later on. He also was half owner of A&M Records the label the Carpenters recorded for.
When I was growing up being a Carpenters fan wasn't "cool" so I was a closeted Carpenters fan! It's so great to see people reacting to them now & loving them.

I know exactly where I was the first time I heard this. I was 12 and at my friends house. We always had a transistor radio on. We just stopped what we were doing and listened. We had never heard a voice like that. She also played the drums on this song.

I had the good fortune to attend their 1st San Francisco concert at the Civic Auditorium on Dec 4th, 1970 (fond memories - 1st ever live concert!). They introduced a new Christmas song "Merry Christmas Darling" which is still one of favorites to this day! Of course, I brought their 1st album "Ticket to Ride", then the 2nd "Carpenters" and every subsequent album!

Many Carpenters songs I would categorize as cheesy except Karen Carpenter is singing them. She is amazing. And she has a really sad and impactful back story.
Per Songfacts the Carpenters signed with A&M Records in 1969, which was co-owned by Herb Alpert. Burt Bacharach asked Alpert to record the song himself, but he didn't feel comfortable with the lyrical content - "Moondust in your hair" - and instead produced a new arrangement for the Carpenters. The Carpenters' first single was a cover of The Beatles' "Ticket To Ride," which hit #54 in the US. This was their second single.

Love this song! The solo was a trumpet (or possibly a cornet, which is a slightly softer-sounding trumpet). A french horn has a very different sound. (I won't try to describe it in words. lol!)

This song just reminds me of when I used to play songs on my siblings organ in elementary school and this is one of the songs in the song book for the organ.
Their GIANT hit, around 1970/71, played on the radio thru the rest of the decade. Everyone alive then knew this song, in the US and UK.

Brings back a lot of great memories. When riding the school bus the girls from choir would sing Carpenters songs the entire route. Both Richard and Karen were an amazing team. He came up with the idea to multi-layer Karen's voice along with the back-up singers like Les Paul pioneered with his wife Mary.

Karen was one of a kind. There will never be another like her. She had such a pure calming voice. And she was a terrific drummer. That was her passion even more than singing. Sadly we lost her so young. Thankfully we have her legacy left in her music. The Carpenters had so many great songs such as "For All We Know", "Goodbye To Love", "Top Of The World", "Sing", "Yesterday Once More", "I Won't Last A Day Without You", "Please Mr. Postman", "Only Yesterday", "There's A Kind Of Hush (All Over the World)", "I Need To Be In Love" & so many more.
My next door neighbor Midge and me wore out this 45. We would dance around the porch together and even at 10, we could recognize what a wonderful talent Karen was. Ah sweet memories!
Such a classic and so good. My parents really liked their music and listened to it a lot but not as much as The Beatles haha. If you both can find it, I highly suggest you react to the biopic film The Karen Carpenter Story starring Cynthia Gibb as Karen. It's such a good movie. Ok, BJ is here mentioning peas and carrots, so I get hungry and went to get me some peas and carrots while finishing this song lol. The other men in the Carpenters were friends of Richard and Karen. Richard knew them when they formed a band called Spectrum circa 1968 with Gary Sims, Dan Woodhams, and Leslie Johnston. Richard formed Richard Carpenter Trio in 1967 with himself, Karen on drums, and Wes Jacobs. Karen had been playing the drums for at least a year and awarded the John Phillip Sousa Band award.

Whenever you hear the drums in a Carpenters song, that's Karen herself playing them. She was considered one of the best drummers in the business, and it's what she really wanted to do, but the suits from the Record Company only wanted her to sing.

She is a great drummer but it is Hal Blaine playing on this song and on most of their early hits. Karen does play on some tracks including some of their later singles like Hurting Each Other and Sing
Hal Blaine did play on this and most of their early hits, as he & the Wrecking Crew also did for countless other bands of that era. It doesn't change the fact that jazz-influenced Karen was far better than a "decent" drummer who counted even Buddy Rich as an admirer.

Used to make fun of them when I was a kid in the 60's/70's. I loved Rock, Funk, and Soul. Then I grew up. And so did my taste. What a beautiful voice!
I also grew up listening to the Carpenter's I know every word to every song. I listen and cry memories do that..
Here is a 19-year-old Karen leading the Carpenters on their journey of hits...the drummer has a "voice"!! With Richard's arrangements and Karen's voice, the Carpenters stayed among the top musical stars of the 1970s...in competition against great groups...Chicago, Eagles, Doobie Brothers, Earth Wind and Fire. The variety of genre' made the 70s the BEST decade of music and the Carpenters are an all-time great duo!
I was in first grade in 1970. One of our teachers - Miss Greenstein - sang this song to one of the boys in the class at assembly. She was corny and always singing current pop songs to us. She wasn’t trying seriously to be creepy….just goofy.

This song would come to mind (and it’s possible I hummed it lol) when when I’d rock our son as a baby. Such a beautiful song!
Richard's arrangements and Karen's voice, unbeatable
I was born in 1970 and my mom used to play the Carpenters songs growing up. I've always liked them but thought they were kinda boring when I was an angsty teen. As I've grown older I've appreciated their music more and more. Karen's voice is so warm and her phrasing is so spot on. And Richard's arrangements are so pristine and impeccable. Their music is timeless.
