Thanks a lot for this lesson.. my sister has talent, she plays music just by listening to it since childhood, she never learnt any of this.. i have always been fascinated and impressed by her extraordinary talent and wanted to learn to play as well... thanks again
I’ve learnt more in too lessons than I knew from trying to read a book. I’m brand new to the keyboard, but I so desire to understand how to read music. Thank you so much.
I always remembered where C is by thinking of the two black keys as "chopsticks". Since "Chopsticks" starts with a C at the beginning, the key C is before the the two black keys. I also thought something similar for the note F. The three black keys are like a "fork". Fork has an F at the beginning, so the key F is before the three black keys.
I have just purchased a key and I would love to learn to play it. Thanks for the lessons, they are just great. I am surprised just how much I have learnt in such a short time.
I am resuming my piano lessons again. I just found your site today. I have completed the first two lessons and so far I find your teaching style very pleasant and easy to understand. I also appreciate that you summarize what was learned at the end of each lesson. I find this to be a good teaching aid. Thanks for sharing.
Hmm, were you using fixed Do or movable Do? Fixed Do is when the "Do" syllable is always the note C. Movable Do is when Do changes depending on what key or scale you are talking about.
Hey. Can you talk a little bit about the number of key on a keyboard/piano? I'm a begginer but I have noticed that the extent of the keyboard is not always the same. I have a small keyboard and I don't understand the different number of keys between instruments can affect your playing. Thanks you so much :) Loving the videos!

Notes go below the staff because there are more keys on the keyboard than lines or space. With treble clef and bass clef combined, there can only be 28 notes (one for each line or space), but there are 88 keys on the keyboard.
There are a few things for how to learn piano Try practicing for an hour a day, or just 1/2 an hour if you short of time. Do extra practice whenever you have more time. For example, on weekends you can do more than 1 hour, maybe 2 or 3, or even more. (I discovered about these and more from Denelle piano lesson site )

Thank you for these videos, I like the fact that you get to the matter right away, many other youtubers have those awful, long introductions nobody actually cares about. Really good explanations :)
Hey Sasha, Thanks for commenting. The reasoning behind using a, b, c, d, e, f, g, a, b, is to demonstrate the musical alphabet and finding notes on the keyboard. do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, ti do is often used by singers and is better suited describing the steps and intervals of a major (or minor) scale given a certain starting note. Since the piano involves using different combinations of black and white keys depending on the scale, explaining the musical alphabet made more sense to me.

Hello Victoria, Don't sell yourself short. I really struggled with certain subjects when I was learning music. In fact, there was a class in my college program called Aurals 2, in which we had to write down music and sing by ear. I had to take the class four times, failing it each time. On the final time, things just "clicked" and I got it. I ended up getting an A in Aurals after that. The point is, keep at it. Watch each video several times before moving onto the next. Take it slow.

Well, first things first. The lines and spaces are different for each of the clefs mainly due to a decision someone made a long time ago. lol. I think the reasoning behind this was that the clefs are supposed to be joined at middle C. Middle C for the treble clef is a ledger line below the staff and middle C for the bass is one ledger line above the staff. To accomplish this, the lines and spaces need to go in order from bottom line bass clef to top line treble.

The teaching is very clear, and very well taught in a timely manner. Piano is not easy at first. But you allow it to be attainable. It is a must that I learn. I learned the little I know playing in an old Baptist Church. And have been gifted to play a few bars by ear. But I want to get more knowledgeable so I can play for singers. Your video is just what I needed. Since I am also a singer, the greatest goal will be when I can sing and play for myself. Thank you and I look forward to moving on to lesson 3 and so on. Appreciate it and I believe my dream to play will succeed because of your inviting, easy enjoyable way to learn.
Hannah Palmer Thanks for the question. I am not exactly sure what you mean. Could you tell me what time in the video that I was talking about it? Thanks.
I like this, I have been playing piano for about a year and a half, I'm getting really frustrated because I want to play so bad, but have not really been able to read, or play anything I love... I'm considering quitting my piano teacher, and go on learning a little on my own here, and there.... Is there any advice that you possibly could give me.... I wish I could enjoy it, but I find it very frustrating, and I don't like it... But I love the piano and want to play so bad, Would I be able to learn from your videos well enough so I could play basic music ?

Hi from your previous video what does it mean when a note is. Upside down?
Your videos are great. :)
Thanks!
Every good boy does fine
Hi, what brand and model of keyboard do you have?
At 10:43 in the video, you said the note above ‘A’ is ‘D’, but it is ‘B’. You should fix that.
its a long shot that this'll be answered, but why do notes go below the staff anyway? why cannot they be right on the lines and spaces given?
Notes go below the staff because there are more keys on the keyboard than lines or space. With treble clef and bass clef combined, there can only be 28 notes (one for each line or space), but there are 88 keys on the keyboard.
i agree with you, but for someone who heard do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, ci, do all his life and want to learn how to play piano its very confusing.
Uh oh why is the third note above f on cards for treble clef a d not b? So confused
Kirsty Campbell you are correct! it is supposed to be a b. I made a mistake.
i used a white board pen to label my keys
