My first 20 min with Sonicware LoFi-12 XT without a plan or a manual

  • I jumped in, deliberately not reading a manual. I think they did an exemplary job on the UI as everything was very clear (with glasses, because the display is tiny). This was a single take, but then I just removed me noodling with it to make it 5 min. What you don't see is MODX next on the bed that I use as sampling source of sounds.
Also I'm kinda using it the wrong way around too - trying to sample loops, while this is far more geared to time triggering one shots. Which became quickly obvious. So then I have to trigger them at the first note and hold them down across all the bars. Not what this was made for.
Lofi-12 XT is very different than SmplTrek - where SmplTrek is a 48kHz/stereo sample and pattern recording "studio" with a very strong left-to right workflow heavily centered around a song structure, LoFi-12 XT is a 12/22kHz mono sample only, 8 track and heavily centered around a pattern structure and geared towards triggering sounds/slices.
I already see new things that SmplTrek is missing (ASR on spliced kits for example, more robust effect system and tags) and things that LoFi-12 is missing:
    - only 40 sec MAX per sample, including sample that will be sliced - it is enough for one shots, not much for slices.
    - no stems export - or any type of "export". This is something that makes this a jailed box with no obvious way to start on it and continue elsewhere. (That has to change IMHO)
    - there are a few things that if you forget to do you may loose stuff - like saving slices, pattern, song and project is separate from each other. If you save a project but forget to save the patter, the next time the project will have no pattern - I learned that the hard way, hahaha.
Also LoFi-12 XT comes with an enormous amount of good quality samples on the SD card. (It's a good move, because Lofi XT can read only 22kHz samples and people would need to convert theirs first)
I had a total blast and now I have a headache from all that bum/bum/clap.

Great stuff man. Impressive that you managed this without any reading, and you came up with something that sounds really good. That screen does worry me, though. Like Roland screens, seems too small for the job. Did you find yourself squinting it a lot? (Nice to find another MODX owner, too. Sold mine a while back, but a beast of a machine and a great sound source for something like this.)

Yeah, I normally don't use reading glasses but for this display I have to put one on. Still the UI on LoFi is much improved on SmplTrek (less crowded and more focused). The best on these is that it's quite obvious how to use it, unlike many other devices when you need to remember strange combinations of keys.

whats the difference, between this and the lofi 12? I know you mentioned a few things above, but if you can think of anything else, either practice or creative...?

Actually you can load what ever sample you want at any frequency rate. The LoFi-12 XT will convert them automatically to 24kHz.
