    My grandfather's brother flew 25 missions as a B-17 pilot. I met him as a teenager on my grandfather's farm with his beautiful French wife and their two beautiful daughters. He was a brigadier general (ret.). I had admired and read about American pilots since I was little, built very many models, etc. I still remember shaking his hand. Three of his brothers had died in the war. It was an honor to stand there beside him.

    My father flew 29 combat missions as lead pilot of a b24 bomber. He told me handling stress of combat was easy once you considered yourself already dead. The Eighth Air Forces losses were horrific. They had more casualties than the Marine Corpse had in the Pacific theater. He said accurate bombing was a joke. Accurate was subjective. He said that flak could bounce your plane several feet in any direction. If this happened while the drop was underway the bombs could land miles from the target depending on your altitude.
    RIP Dad. Miss you.

    Great that they did the same thing as other bomber movies - for the sake of the audience the crew talk to each other in the open without intercom. I’ve flown on a B-17 and you often had to yell in someones ear for them to hear you.

    Allied bombings in 1943 surely didn't mind hitting population centers. It was usually the point of the bombings, like in Dresden or later Tokyo. All this smells of revision history.

      This comment shows the ignorance of the people of today .
      At the time accurate bombing was somewhere within 5 miles , that’s all we were capable of .
      Dresden was a major distribution hub of the railways , and yes we knew there would be thousands of civilian casualties .
      It’s called war

    • @liberoarkangelos9475
      @liberoarkangelos9475 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly ... especially US high altitude carpet bombing. I have no doubt that the tried to hit the target ... but dropping sticks that big on a target that small ... not a chance you don't hit stuff near by

      Try use some common sense. What they bombed depended on the target, obviously. Many bombing raids were specifically aimed at a factory, or industrial area. Some raids were intended to destroy the morale of the civilian population, so residential areas were hit.
      Unfortunately, in that era, housing was built around factories, or factories built near housing, due to travelling to work being more difficult. Consequently, many raids on factories also meant civilian losses.

    "I don't see the target so I will avoid to hit civilians by circling around and have a second try"
    "Well, dropping a bunch of inert bombs from thousands of feet at hundreds of mph with a dispersal area of kilometers, it will make no difference"
    "Yes, but so will I tell it to my grandchildren, in movie and history books".
    US bombed from high altitude and aiming proved ineffective. GB bombed from lower altitude but by night and aiming (through pathfinders dropping light rockets) proved ineffective.
    Actually, compared to the cost and losses, strategic bombing as a whole proved rather ineffective. It did not weakened the will to fight of the Germans, it destroyed factories but not the machinery into them, that went under shelter, and was at its full force when the war was nearly won, so that in late 1944 there was no major target to bomb and even small towns were erased meaningless.
    Only the bombing of the fuel infrastructure did a difference, but occurred very late in the war.
    Germans when accused of war crimes pointed out that unnecessary bombing of cities could have been one - then were retorted that they started this, on Guernica, Amsterdam, Coventry, London.

    Like so many other Hollywood movies, so called based on true events this was not the story of the last mission of the Bell but a Kolodge of many B-17 bombers events and stories. The Bell's final mission was pretty much a normal mission for the bomber and crew. One of the Waist gunners was credited with a German fighter during the mission. The Bell arrived back at the base pretty much un--scaved and did end up back home in the states along with it's crew. I was privileged to see the Capitan of the Memphis bell at Willow Run airport signing a book he wrote in honor of his crew and the Memphis Bell. Note Private Ryan is a similar Hollywood movie rolling many events by many soldiers into one group of soldiers into a single mission. Want a true insight as to the Bomber war over Europe see the Movie '12 O' clock High, with Gregory Peck.

      Back then, they took you home, carted you around to big cities to sell war bonds, then made you train new crews in the states. They tried not to let crew go back into action out if fear that their death would be propaganda material. Some did manage to transfer around. Some pilots from the European theater retrained on the B-29 and went on to fly in the Pacific.

    The B 17 did carpet bombing and could not bomb such a target as a factory in a town without bombing houses.

    • @marksnyder8022
      @marksnyder8022 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not true. It depended on the target. Factory sheds in daylight were not that hard to hit, although there were plenty of misses too.

    • @katazack
      @katazack ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The whole idea of daylight bombing was to be able to see the target and limit collateral damage. It usually didn't work that way, but that was the design of the missions. Carpet bombing was generally done by medium bombers against tactical targets.

    • @alphatrion4020
      @alphatrion4020 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wouldn't the bombardier be rear of the cockpit? They have their own flight controls separate from the pilots. This would allow the plane to fly by the bombardiers controls I believe. That definitely would have taken out the flight crew in this clip shown. I'm not for sure, but that is what it looks like to me. Believe me, I've been wrong many , many, many times. I'm sure a Hollywood movie got it right.

    • @rockymountainlifeprospecti4423
      @rockymountainlifeprospecti4423 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @alphatrion4020 not at this time, he would be in the nose gun 50cal position. They're not on the bomb run yet, they are engaged with fighters, which normally pull off when the AA starts when they are approaching the target he falls back to take over the aircraft to direct it right over the intended target, drop ordnance and turn it back over the pilots to get out of there, he then would return to his guns, good question though, im looking at it now frozen and you can see the guys ripping apart. Check out a diagram of the plane, it's easier to see.

What's going on with these fake historical narratives? They use a crummy machine voice and they get so many facts wrong. Don't they bother to proofread or even have an editor review the product before posting it? Overall, I'd give it a C-.

    This is the kind of movie you watch only once and forget about. That's the problem: it looks and sounds like a great movie but then, it's just a typical WW2 movie. Yes, it's based on a true story but there were a LOT of bomber crews who did their 25 missions and were allowed to retire. In the end, I walked out of the movie theater feeling just: meh. It felt like something that had been copied from just about every war movie out there and the characters were forgettable. On a scale of 1 to 10, I rate it a 5. It's nothing to write home about.
