I'm sure plenty have done it before. Don't know how that setup would go around Australian outback tracks but if its built strong it should survive. Give it a go if that's your dream.
I love the debate over coffee v. travel! I know a couple who have sailed literally around the globe and to further their travels they cut back on expensive things like going out to dinner and drinks, then cut back on big meat purchases (hard to keep fresh anyway), then cut out meat altogether, etc. Yes, it absolutely helped them further their travels. But, it there is also a cost in quality of life. Does a cuppa or two a day really break the bank? Not talking about crazy cappucino drinks, just plain old builders tea. No, of course not. Nor does a lovely old gin and tonic sundowner once in a while. Nothing against teetotaling vegans, but that is not my version of quality of life so that would be different kind of expense. I would rather spend the money on a bit of tea and a spot of gin once in a while than a fancy OzTent chair, for example. It all depends on what is important to you. To me, anything worth doing is worth doing well. When people ask me how much it costs to do my overland travel I always reply with "how much do you have." When they scrunch up thier face in confusion, I explain; it costs exactly what you have. If you have a lot, you will stop into the pub for steak and a pint, stay in a motel or hotel once in a while. If you have less, you will cook your own meat on the braii. If you have even less, you will eat beans/rice/pasta with sauces. Whatever you have is what it costs! Great breakdown! Many thanks ;-)

I like to support pubs and business in places i am going trough,and yes i am for quality over quantity ,reither do 4months per year and enjoy myself than do 8 or a year and worry about every $, worrying about having coffee here or beer there its not my type of fun...

haha,I always just think in km/l so I can count individual litres out if I see a sign and I know by my gauge how long I've got. Much easier when I'm unladed at 10km/l than at 8.. but close enough.
Excellent breakdown Brett. I think with the current situation and the huge increase in people heading out to explore the country in caravans and 4wds prices have increased quite a bit. Will be interesting if you can do a general comparison even for a shorter trip. U did that insanely cheap man. Hate to think what it would be now. I plan to do one next year possibly. I'm from New Zealand so I have no idea how to get hold of a truck that I can sleep and live in without spending a tonne.
I was a Landrover man, I got sick to death of constant mechanical failures so I off loaded it, sad day, but one of the wisest decision I have ever made.....
I think the final decision came when I went to a low speed roll over and saw how lucky the old bloke was who was driving, managed to (remarkably) survive. then I thought how my kids would have faired if placed in a similar position....... that's when it occurred to me that it's just not worth the potential grief.....I went out and bought the safest car I could afford, with airbags, boron steel cabin etc etc everything just not available in Defenders... Defender.....It's all fun until you prang it, then if you survive, your going to spend a lot of time either in rehab, or as an invalid.....They are so unsafe....... Unfortunately.......
Well it is in mine, love my coffee, morning coffee is my favourite time of day and a couple beers a few times a week. I wouldn't sacrifice all my loves otherwise I wouldn't enjoy myself as much. I've traveled and I'd spend a lot less on accommodation coz I'm a little more cheeky by sleeping in car parks ect.

Mate I travel and some of your budget you can cut in half most of my food was in the bush yabbie fishing early in the morning fresh roo from some trucke hit the bastard check parking bays for use tea bags or grain of sugar spill on thee ground yeah mate I was brought up in a caravan mom dad did season work I travel oz in a early Holden rabbits was running around then good on you for travel oz but think outside the box

Mate missing from your calculations are motor vehicle insurance and rego, a internet/phone data subscription and the huge fact of depreciation of all plant and machinery that will one day have to all replaced. But thanks for putting down all your details, having seen people travelling ozz with million dollar rigs and drinking the best wines every night doesn't it all gets down to spending the kids inheritance if you got it? LOL
Very true, didn't add that because everyone will have different levels of cover, state rego fees, phone contracts etc.. You'll have to add them in. I just covered the basics that others would likely need and can replicate. Million dollar rig would be nice.. Could get a might fancy Defender 130 build for that ;-)

At the end of the day, anything could go wrong despite your best attempts.. through maintenance and replacing known issues are all you can do. The bush will break stuff regardless of your efforts. And every car is different.
Roaming The Outback the reason I ask is I got a 97 300tdi discovery. Im contemplating whether to put some money on it and renew a bunch of things on it (diffs, gearbox, rebuild engine etc ) or get a newer vehicle . The thing is I love my disco but I don’t have the confidence if it for remote area travel. And if I do get something else it would be a Toyota just for that priced of mind.
Guess you really need to decide if you're keeping the car long term. Mine is for life, so have spent a bit to rebuild it. Get some quotes and work from there what is cheaper, bearing in mind any new car you get can still have a bunch of issues.

That's a shame you had that happen, in the 17 years I've had my 200tdi I've never touched the turbo... plenty of oil changes and letting the engine idle for a min or two after I've stopped driving! Bloody annoying for the both things to go after such a short time!
Just replaced it again in 2018.. possibly caused by contaminated oil. Replaced all turbo hoses this time too. Turbo places suggested may be caused by sludge build up in the hoses releasing particles into the turbo, which stuffed the bearings. See how it goes this time.
I don't eat any junk food package stuff. Eat real food, fresh fruit, veggies, nuts seeds, cereals, fish, meat.. you won't feel hungry all the time like eating snack food junk.
$5/day on grog as if!!!!! Seriously mate, thanks for that info but in reality food and toiletries are an every day cost any way so irrelevant to the actual cost of the trip.
I'm assuming one or two cans a day bought in a box, but everyone's different. If you're loaded with cash then budgeting for toiletries etc then doesn't matter. If not, then it needs to be accounted for if you plan to take a trip and stretch every dollar.
i enjoy your videos so much roaming the out back.......how ever i will never understand your logic in owning a land drover driving adog of 4wd that are not reliable or made for aussie conditions in the out back .and hard to get parts for in austraila your just making your life much harder and difficult.whye.???????.....i own a 60 series landcruiser whitch ive owned for seventeen years with over 500,000kms on same engine still running strong .......it has towed everything with tons of weight behind it in 45 degree days has done the roughest tracks and terrains knowern hit kangroos and run over trees still unbreakable .......

In 1983 I travelled 30,000 miles with a $3000 budget and no dole ticket.
Today you'd need $30,000 minimum and hope nothing goes wrong.

The Defender hasn't broke me yet, I'm hoping I'll reach a point where everything on the car is new, and all mechanical issues just disappear ;-)

I took a career break for one year, unpaid. Perhaps negotiate with your boss or resign.

Looks like its around 450-474 per week for 10 months , interesting !
Not being tight its about $1 per km,so if you do 25000km in a year ,count on $25k ..

if you can afford to, just pay someone to drive you. A lot more can be done with some additional dosh than what I do when travelling.
