    Four bikes I've always wanted to throw a leg over; A full YRC kittted R7, a Desmosedici RR, an RC213V and an FP1. You my man, have just met one of my hero's, but best of all didn't turn into a Jimi Saville or Rolf Harris horror story. Thank you for the audio orgasm feed.

    Great video. Reminds me of an SP1 I had years ago. Similar power, reach to the bars and suspension set up. Perfect recipe for spirited road riding. Having had two gen 2 Tuono’s and a gen3, I now (after seeing this vid, want a gen 2 rsv

    I presume you didn't need to change the engine oil then. Despite the two very obvious oil sight glasses (1 on the lower crankcase and one higher up on the gearbox case) there is only a single oil filler cap on the FP1. I would say that the reason for this would be so that the oil level in the gearbox can be checked easily and so making sure any oil paths from the crankcase to the gearbox are not blocked. And despite the deep sump the whole engine only takes 3L of oil.

    @dylanhedges5634 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Love it!
    How cool is the reverse cylinder? Don't know why it's not more common it makes sense to look at.

    • @storminben
      @storminben 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it is predominantly packaging.
      Getting the intake with as straight a line as possible is tricky
      Mounting the carbs/throttle bodies is also really awkward as there is very little space between the front of the engine and the radiator
      Getting the exhaust length right is also hard as that will be very short
      It will also heat up the fuel

    • @motorcycle_workshop
      @motorcycle_workshop 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@storminben I would say the biggest issue is that the fuel is held relatively high on the bike which will affect handling. There's no way of putting the fuel under the riders seat as per more modern 'race' bikes. There is actually plenty of space on the FP1 for the airbox and throttle bodies as the cylinders lean rearwards although the throttle bodies are sat inside the airbox which is a pain.

    • @YAMR1M
      @YAMR1M 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The reverse cylinder head was its biggest issue.. The back of the engine would get too hot when running and the cooler air over the front of the engine was too cold so the bores would oval and it would scrap engines at every race meeting. They did try to limit this by using a plate on the cylinder block and running hot oil through the engine at the same temperature as the engine would see during a race. But this was still not ideal as the heads would still run way too hot on one side so the engine block would still distort. A new/ freshly built engine was fitted after qualifying and after the first race too. So for every race it would have a new engine. The engines passed though a few engine builders hands from Suter initially as it was an engine he was involved with along with Ilmor. But something happened with Suter and Petronas so he was removed from the project. I passed to a dutch tuner and was finally given to Riccardo engineering to manage and for them to find engine builders that could be trusted. Riccardo also did the road testing of the road bikes for road homologation but again found the engines ran very hot and ultimately Petronas had a choice of sell the bikes and risk issues due to the heat given off or pull the project and store the bikes. The chassis being an FTR chassis was very very good but the engine was only really comparable to a good 600cc engine performance wise so that was also a nail in its coffin too. Stunning bike and they did produce all 150 road bikes plus about 20 race and homologation test mules bikes. I know about 320 cranks were made including a batch of flat plane cranks (not the 120 degree of the original homologated bikes) for the final season the bike was raced to try to make the crank even lighter to get even more RPM. Only a few ever got sold at the time to collectors who would not use them. They did all get sold to a company who wanted to sell them and a deal was done until that company found out Petronas had not paid any duty on the bikes as they had been stored in a secure bonded warehouse. So that deal fell apart. I think now some guys have bought them and exported them so the duty and taxes in Malaysia would not need to be paid there.
      A really interesting and sad story when you look into it fully.

    Hi Griff I recently bought a SL 1000 Falco and love your technical videos about the 1000cc twins! At 61 and having rode mostly Moto Guzzi's this is my first real superbike. and I love it. Would like to buy parts from you but the stupid Brexit makes it far to expensive for me. Maybe you could open a warehouse inside the EEC?

      @Aprilia Performance ah no bother just an errant curiosity is all :) have a great day

    • @YAMR1M

      There were 150 bikes that all bar a few which went to a handful of collectors, never meant to be ridden. There were also a few race bikes and homologation/ test mules that also ended up in the warehouse in Malaysia over a period of about 10 year I think. Most are still in the warehouse, although a few did escape when a Malaysian company purchased them all but found out Petronas had not paid duty or taxes on them as the warehouse was a bonded storage unit so had not officially entered Malaysia until they started to take them out of the warehouse. So that deal died. I think now a couple of guys has been buying them up a few at a time and as they were being exported again, so never officially going in to Malaysia they would not be hit with all of the unpaid duty ect. Most are still in storage still I think....
