Building a Return of the Jedi Proton Grenade Prop

- The Proton Grenade/Endor bunker bomb from Return of The Jedi/Battlefront 2 is one of my favorite hand props from the Star Wars universe. I've always wanted one for my collection, so I sat down and 3D modeled it, printed it, and in this how-to I'm going to show you how you can make one of your own.
It's a great project that uses a few of my favorite weathering and aging techniques and brings just a bit of that Star Wars aesthetic to any collection or cosplay.

Wow Derek, another amazing work of art, you are so multitalented!! This prop is absolutely beautiful, it looks better than most of the props we made for movies haha! I wish I knew you back when I was doing special FX work, I would have hired you in a heartbeat, and then our props would have looked waaaay better haha! Awesome job and so generous of you to share your files and knowledge with everyone! Hope you guys have a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year my friend! Cheers🍻🎄🎁😍👍
Thanks, Steve! I really appreciate that coming from you. Merry Christmas to you guys, too!
@@VanOaksProps Hey buddy, we can’t thank you guys enough for that sneaky awesome Christmas surprise, you are the best!! We are pounding them haha, omg sooooo yummy!! I can’t wait for all this mess to be over with cuz we would love to hang out more with you guys, and maybe one day we can collaborate on some projects, I think that would be a blast! Hope you both have a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, let’s hope it’s a waaaay better one!! Cheers😍😄🍻🎄🎁☃️
Excellent! Thanks for the files. I'm looking forward to making one!
Of course! I look forward to seeing how it turns out.
Thanks for your talented work Sir!
I’m happy to share what I know. Thanks for watching.
I'm almost a full week into printing a Hover Tank Trooper helmet. Love 3D printing projects and props. You prop looks fantastic, well done.
Thank you! The tank trooper helmet is such a great piece of design. How much longer on the print?
I have about 12 hours to go ... 1 blast shield and the chin greeblie is all that is left.
That was pretty cool!
Looks great. This will be an interesting addition to the items found in my car maybe under the seat ;)
Thanks for watching!
DUDE!!!! I was into this very same prop! I have even been participating in the RPF group on this prop and trying to locate all the original parts. And, now you come along with this video. Crazy! I'll be getting in touch.
Nice! It’s a good one and the discussion on the rpf has been a great wealth of knowledge.
Printing this now. Such a great simple model, thank you for making it available. Fantastic job, new sub.
Welcome!
Going to need to checkout this print!! Nice painting and enjoyed the video!!
Thanks for watching!
Interesting handling of textures, I use an Epoxy Coating for 3D printing, which allows you to leave the piece smooth with very little effort, it is called 3D-SMOOTHER. Here (Spain) Feroca markets it, but I suppose you will have similar products there. A couple of LEDs and a few screws would have been great. Congratulations and Merry Christmas. 🎅🎅🎅
In my research for the prop I noticed it had a textured surface so I just decided to hide the print lines with texture paints rather than smooth them out. I definitely could have used a product like the one you mentioned and typically do on things like helmets.
@@VanOaksProps Yes, the piece in question has texture. But having softened it before applying texture with the sprays, would have eliminated the printing pattern, which obviously does not have the original. Anyway, very interesting, how interesting it is to see that you deal with other topics apart from what is referred to as Halloween.
Definitely.
Love the video and channel brother, going to work on this guy this week!
Awesome! Thank you!
Great video! I enjoyed the way the video was produced as well as your prop building process.
And I learned new things too. :)
Your comment over on TTFS lead me here, good content sir!
Thanks Odin! Been a fan of yours for years.
Excellent video and files! Got my parts printed just have to wrap up a couple other things to clear some space on the bench! lol
Awesome! Enjoy
The main base looks like an oil filter from a 1978 Honda Civic! LOL That's cool, man!
i hope u do something like the for a living dude. Wasted talent if u don’t! Amazing vid
I do, kind of. On paper I’m a graphic artist but with everything that’s gone on this year I’ve been freelancing a lot more, which has included prop making for movies and collectors.
You may not be able to reuse a grenade, but you can pick up a surplus one that was left behind from the droids or the clones
Thanks for the cool print. Do you have a diagram of the assembly order of the button?
You're welcome! They should go first collar, second collar, geared collar, cap.
Wow that's awesome! I don't have a printer but was just wondering how much time and printer filament goes into this prop? Might pass this video to someone I know that has a printer.
Also new to your channel and now a subscriber.. thanks again 👍🏽
There’s variables that can drastically change the time for 3d prints but generally speaking it’s less than $10 in filament.
I apologize but I can’t see a thing in this helmet! I can’t seem to find the link to the 3D model?

Looks like a oil filter canister is used..
It was actually a motor housing from inside a hammer drill, of all things. Crazy, right?
