Ha. The story goes that Lionel came to see Kenny and had the melody and the word Lady. Kenny said go for it and Lionel took off. When they were recording it he only had the first verse. So he tells Kenny to hold on and goes to the restroom to write the second verse.
"What did the Lady do?" After he sang this to her, probably anything he wanted. You can certainly hear the Lionel Richie in this song. He was a great performer. He was in showbusiness for years and years before he died, music, movies and television, and you can't find anything bad about the man. He was a genuinely decent fellow. He's greatly missed. His other biggest hit was, "The Gambler". You should add that one to your list if you get the chance.

Funny. I listened to Kenny Rogers & The Fifth Edition, as a teen, my Mom said she really didn't care for him. Then he switched music genres from pop to country and my mother would defend him with her life! lol He just passed a couple months ago. I think was 80 or 81. God bless him. You knew who you were hearing the moment he opened his mouth. The song Ruby, I think is the one that made country fans take notice. Then came plenty. Coward of the County, The Gambler, Lucille. Kenny didn't have a huge range, but he had a nice bit of gravel to his voice & a sweetness to his tone, & he knew how to work the heck out of it. This is the perfect song to witness his showmanship, working the stage, connecting with the audience, knowing just which notes to go soft on & when to get dramatic. Masterclass. People are going to push for you to listen to Coward of the County, and it's a good enough song. But I've got a problem with the topic & the way the girlfriend gets used to make the hero heroic, as it were. If you want to explore more of Kenny Rogers' work, The Gambler is a must-both because it's a very cool song & because that was his nickname. Lucille & Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town are "been cheated on/heartbroken" songs that are fun to sing along to in spite of that. #lol Love Will Turn You Around is one of his I like that I've never seen anyone request, very upbeat.
