  • Welcome to I’ll Knit (& Spin!) If I want To! I asked y’all to send in some of your questions (from everything from fiber arts, to designing and on!) so I could put together a little video for y’all every Friday doing my best to answer your questions!

In this week’s episode we cover:
    1. I recently explained to a non-knitter friend about gauge swatches and blocking -- and she totally stumped me with her question. She asked, since a yarn can grow when it's blocked and gauge swatches can be imperfect when estimating how much a yarn can change when blocked, why we don't soak yarn before knitting with it. Wouldn't that give a better understanding of the final state of the yarn while knitting versus waiting until the end?
    2. Some of my favorite patterns of your are your "moon" series -- moonwhistle, moonwake (and I see a spring moon too!). I wondered if you had a moon affinity or if this naming cadence was just a coincidence?
    3. I've been wanting to learn to spin for a while and watching your Friday episodes inspired me to go for it! I finally took a private spinning lesson over the holidays and am going to rent a wheel to practice before committing to purchasing a wheel. I know it is different for everyone, but curious to know how long did it take you to get to a level of consistency in your spinning so that you spun a yarn that you could actually use? And at what point did you start to learn different ways of spinning and plying?
    4. I am a recent designer and just wondering if there is a thing as re-publishing a pattern in a different yarn? My two patterns I have released the yarn is now 100% discontinued. I would love to redu them in readily available yarn but I don't know if that is a thing?
    5. Hi Andrea! I am joining in on the Weekender spin it to knit it challenge and I am so grateful that you threw this challenge out there! I have started spinning again after a ten year hiatus and I am just having the time of my life! I am so glad I challenged myself to become a better spinner so thanks for the little kick to get going again :) Would you mind sharing a bit about your spinning story? How you got started, what was the catalyst that drew you to make your own yarn, what projects you made with those first overspun skeins of yarn (or maybe you were a pro right of the gates!). Also, what helped you take your spinning to the next level? Was it a class, TH-cam video, or did you just spin a lot? You've mentioned several books in past episodes so I've been reading and learning a lot but I'm curious what helped you get from a beginner level. Thank you so much again for all the inspiration!!

One of my favorite things about the coast of Maine is the way moonlight bounce off of the ocean.

2:43 i have found that the best way to explain the “why wash after knitted vs before knitted” is to think about the fact that after you have knitted your yarn you have made it lay in a new position and when you block it you help it settle into it's new “home position”❤

The socks look great. I totally agree that hand spun yarn just feels alive. When comparing commercially processed yarn to hand spun, what comes to mind is a ruled pencil line compared to a hand made line. The ruler interrupts the character of the mark. There's a place for both, but the less tools involved the more room for expression.

I'm always amazed at how little the inconsistencies in handspun show up when you knit with them. My first batt spin was quite thick-thin compared with what I'd been able to achieve with combed top. I ended up choosing a pattern for the yarn with a lot of stockinette to show off the texture, but you can barely see anything in the FO.
Another tip for dipping your toes into chain plying: I like to chain ply the leftovers from my traditional 2-3 ply spins. If you mess it up, no big deal because not too much yarn is lost. And once you get the hang of it, you end up with a cute mini skein at the end of your spinning project.

Moon whistle reminds me of the children’s book Owl Moon. I think there’s a line about a train whistle - long and low.💜

What a great episode today although I am not a spinner I found it quite interesting. So my question is how do you choose yarns for your sweaters or projects I find myself overwhelmed with all the beautiful I am 75 but a newbie to picking out yhe right yarns. I do love the fact that you do put other yarns to use in your patterns thank you for that. Thank you so much ❤ for the 50% discount on your patterns i got 6 more of your patterns. Now to choose which one to knit up.

When spinning is the activity, yarn is a finished object! I have so many single skeins of handspun that aren't really enough to make anything but a hat or mittens and I only have one head and two hands. I have amorphous plans to use them in blanket squares one day.

The timing of this episode is perfect! I just got my first spinning wheel, a new-to-me Lendrum DT, a few days ago and I have so many hopes and aspirations but then sit in front of it feeling overwhelmed with my lack of knowledge. I love hearing about your spinning journey and hope to be joining a spin it to knit it KAL after I sign up for some Sweet Georgia classes! :) As always, your weekly podcast is what I look forward to on Fridays!

Hi Friday morning here with a cup of coffee and watching your podcast which I enjoyed as always. Learn so many tips from the questions you answer and like listening your spinning journey. I’m definitely not jumping into that yet as I’ve already filled every available space with knitting paraphernalia, I’d need an extension on the house. Thank you for the 100 sale with which I bought the weekender pattern.
I can’t seem to find the info on the March to May KAL you mentioned in the newsletter. I don’t do instagram so perhaps I’ve missed the information.

I have a hard time remembering all the gauges of wool. So many knitters know right of the bat what they are by feeling them. Is there an easy way to know?
