  • In this lesson, we learn to differentiate these three ways to ask question with regards things you might come across at the market in Penang:
    - How much is this?
    - How much is this one?
    - How much for one (piece)?
"Penang Hokkien From Scratch" is a new video series from Learn Penang Hokkien. It is to help you learn Penang Hokkien without any previous experience in the language.
The writing system used is Taiji Romanisation, which uses tone numbers to represent the tones. It is to your benefit that you prepare for the lessons by reading on Taiji Romanisation right here:

Great series! Please keep it up. Love the Hokkien diaspora over SE Asia.

Hi. Thank you for the lesson. Could you include Chinese characters (in case you know them)? I think it would make it easier for students who already speak Mandarin. Also, I think you can ask your audience to leave a comment under the video. This actually helps you boost the algorithm.

Surprisingly to you perhaps, but I am English educated and I do not speak Mandarin!

The first way i would ask how much something costs would be "cit1-leh1 ya1 kui3?" "This one, how expensive?" Is this less commonly used now in Penang?

Yes, you can say that too. And since this is a largely oral language, there are different ways of pronouncing the "ya3". Some say "jor3" and some say cor3.
      Example: Cit1-leh1 cor3 kui3? / How much is it?
