    TO STARTERS-🧡
    To everyone here, if your a starter with your hedgehog, first try picking up your pet with gloves or scooping (him/her) with a shirt. They will know it’s you because they have incredible smell and can smell you through it. Once it is less scared, go ahead and be gentle. Let them know it’s you.
    Then carefully place your hand under. Showing it fear by being nervous when handling will not gain trust with your hedgehog.
    Just some advice❤️❤️❤️

    I'd first and foremost recommend that people don't buy them if they can't handle even taking it out of the cage! I've had mine for two years, and he is the angriest little thing still! I hold him while he is fully balled up and spikes out, it's uncomfortable, but it comes with the territory. :)

    I finally realized what they sound like: those big, metal lawn sprinklers that twist around in a circle and make a rapid pshtpshtpshtpshtpshtpsht sound, then one long psssssssht sound, then go back to pshtpshtpshtpshtpshtpsht again and repeat - like a typewriter spitting water.

    I saw this video before I bought Princess. She was more shy at first but after she finished quilling and grew a little she has become more friendly. She's a little grumpy when you first move her igloo to wake her, but after I let her sniff my fingers and then I pick her up and let her crawl on me. She loves to sleep on me 😆 anyway, thank you for the help 👍🏻

    Another tip if your hedgehogs balled up is (if your hedgehog has deep bedding, so they can bury under the bedding ) you put you hands under the bedding and put your hands up so the bedding will is protecting you from the quills and then open your hands a little bit so the bedding falls out so you can hold it.

      Try not to have any reaction to it. They bite when they want something, such as putting them back in their cage. If you show no reaction, it will learn that you aren’t going to give it what it wants when it bites.

    Hey so, I was wondering if you have any tips for hedgehogs that bite. I was picking up mine and she was doing fine until about 1-2 weeks ago where she started biting me to the point where I'd start to bleed. I'm unsure of what to do cause we've tried getting to smell of food or soap off our fingers before picking her up and have blew a puff of air in her face. Everything we've tried hasn't worked and I've been worried about her, what do you recommend we should do?

  • @scotts4483

    I notice that my hedgehog squirms and wiggles around a lot, but won't ball up, when I hold her on her back. She obviously doesn't seem to like this, as this position leaves her very exposed, so I don't like to keep her in like this for long. However, I often wonder if it's worth training her to become comfortable being held on her back particularly for trips to the vet. Have you had any success with this?

    Questions. I just adopted a 2 month old pinto Hedgie, Kiwi, and he can be a calm fella after his grogginess from a nap subsides. However, even after a few minutes roaming on my desk, on my hands, he suddenly begins to shy away again, balling up and reducing his curiosity, is this normal? I spend time with him for a few minutes when I get home from work, throughout the day on my free days, and nights while I do school work. But, I'm just worried he will always ball up after a few minutes. I know they aren't needy like usual domestic pets like a dog or a cat, but i wonder if Kiwi will ever adjust to me and reduce his balling behavior...

      Why did you buy a pet that is scared and bites? Quality breeders will provide quality pets. Buying poorly raised pets just lets bad breeders keep abusing animals, selling too soon, not socializing, and selling just for money. You wouldn't buy a dog or cat that is scared and is biting, but, people do this often with small animals. Best to only buy from quality breeders so those bad breeders abusing animals have to shut down. That being said. Work with your hedgehog daily. Use gloves if needed. It may take months of daily handling; however, in time the hedgehog should learn to trust you.

    I see that you recommended to separate babies from their mother 2 months old at least. I have bought one at a pet shop and they told me it was only a month old. Now, I didn't know this until I actually saw what you recommend.
    Anyway, my hedgehog is really shy and every time I approach him, it will roll into a ball. I don't know yet how to start gaining its trust/bonding with it. Do you think it's probably because it's too young still?

    My hedgehog was born April 21st. Ive had her for 5 days now and I’m making good progress. I am currently waiting on being able to get her a new enclosure just cause the one i a have is a smallish bin that i dont like having her in so in a few days i should be making her a new one. I have gotten better at calming her down before picking her up so she doesnt ball up. I usually try to stand my ground to make sure she knows I’m not leaving but also not trying to hurt her so i let her smell me and do whatever else until she calms down. Spend an hour or more a day with the hedgehog out of the cage. Use a small box or tub (like size of a shoebox) to carry the hedgehog around with you (I mean like in your home). Watch a movie and offer treats from time to time. The more time you spend near your pet, the more you two will bond.

    My little boy has been very grumpy for the past week or so. But he seems to be calming down a bit. Do you perhaps know as to any reasons for his grumpiness. Cause his was so mad and angry that I had to use the gloves that I had used when I first got him. But now his all lovey dovey again now.

      Hedgehogs are naturally very timid animals due to their lack of good vision and extremely sensitive hearing. Their only way of protecting themselves is their quills. They can often be grumpy in the daylight hours, as they’re nocturnal which may be the issue

    • @earthling1984
      @earthling1984  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Always handle pets before purchase. Properly bred and raised animals will be calm, tame, and easy to handle. Sadly, lots of bad breeders, and, inexperienced buyers. You wouldn't buy a cat or dog that bites and is aggressive; but, people often buy poorly raised small animals. This just let's bad breeders keep neglecting and selling too early. That being said, use gloves if you need to for now. Be very calm and patient. It may take months for an unsociable hedgehog to calm down.

      Don't worry, their instinct is usually defensive, like she'll want to ball up and hiss; it's very unlikely she bites you out of fear or frustration. Usually they bite because something on your skin tastes good, usually salt.

      Search my channel for "Hedgehog" to find all my hedgehog videos. Most important is to have a temperature in the cage that is between 75 and 80F. Also, make sure to only use high quality cat food (nothing from Walmart, they don't carry good brands). I usually used Blue Buffalo's Wilderness or grain free varieties (don't use blue basic, it is their lower quality option), or, Instinct dry cat food with freezedried insects mixed in. I never had a hedgehog live less than 6 years on this simple diet, some even lived over 8 years. For treats I would bake up some chicken breasts, cut them up, and fridge some and freeze some. Then use as needed. I gave some other treats too, but, very sparingly. Always research before you feed anything, some fruits and veggies are good, others are not.

    Ok so I have an adorable baby girl called Daisy who was born 16 Feb this year ... And I also sort of part own a 1 year old boy called Gilbert...he now lives at my Daughters house and is a real cuts boy. Unfortunately at Xmas he had an accident and ended up losing an eye (we had to put him through surgery as it had ruptured) but it's not slowed him down at all! My issue is that Daisy has already bitten me twice which was a bit of a shock as Gilbert never has etc. I know it's early days but have u ever had hogs that have bitten?

    • @earthling1984
      @earthling1984  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Never had a hog bite me. But, all were raised by myself (except the first few I got to start breeding; which luckily were all calm and tame when I got them). Pets from quality breeders who socialize and treat their animals well will be calm and tame upon purchase. You shouldn't buy an animal unless you can easily handle it and know it is calm and tame. Buying animals that are scared or aggressive seems like a good idea to some people. They think, "well, I'll help him and he'll have a good home now". This may be true, but, it also is a sale for that bad breeder who only cares about money and not caring properly for their animals. This just lets these bad breeders keep abusing animals, neglecting them, and breeding them with only money in mind. If we only purchased pets that were calm and tame, and didn't buy from bad breeders, then those bad breeders would go out of business. All they want is the money, so, with no sales, they would have no reason to breed. In turn saving way more animals in the long run from abuse and neglect.
      For your biter I would say just use some leather gloves for now. Handle very often, many times a day. The more you hang out with your hog, the better. In time he should stop that behavior and trust you fully. For now, just protect your hands with gloves and use a towel to hold the hedgehog.

      Thank you so much for advice I am glad to say Daisy seem to be getting better and to be fair she has only been with me for 2 seems now so I understand she must be a little stressed out ...she did come from a very good breeder so am thinking her nipping me was purely to check if I was food etc. Am happy to go at her pace and not force her to hang out with me but am handling her everyday for longer times to build trust and make her realise she is safe in my hands. The issue at the moment is getting her calm enough to clip her toe nails as back ones are very long ...she just balls up and pops when I try so this could take time etc.

    Is there any tips on rescued and rehomed hedgies? My hedgie has been through 2 homes prior to being with me and was already 11 months old. I've had him for several months (about 7 months) now however he has an extreme dislike to everything and anything that isn't in his cage. He will even curl up and puff if you walk by his cage. I do take him out and let him roam on my table, however, If I were to let him roam around on me, he will bite, and not a very nice bite either. He's drawn blood more than once. I do everything I can to make sure I don't smell yummy but he still bites. His last home was a loud home that had a barky dog and children and I'm really not sure what to do to break him from his fear/anxiety. If that is what it is.

      Has it grown it's adult spikes?
      If not maybe it is the time your hedgehog's baby spikes are falling off and adult spikes growing.
      If that's not it maybe it's best to ask a vet or feed him using your hands.
      Not like feed him your hands feed him holding the food with your hands it should leave some scent

    • @Neleaza
      @Neleaza 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah he has his adult spikes. He's over a year old, he was 11 months when I got him, and Ive had him for 7 more. I'd feed him with my hands if I could but for some reason he wont try anything but his cat/dog food diet that I give him. The only time he will take things from me is when I feed him yogurt through plastic syringe which he doesn't seem to mind and I can't hand feed him worms because he will bite, even if not intended. He's really aggressive about eating bugs, he lunges at them and devours them vigorously.

    • @earthling1984
      @earthling1984  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Aww, why did you buy one that was mean? That just lets bad breeders keep breeding and selling. You wouldn't buy a cat or dog that was biting you. All the hedgehogs I sold were calm and tame upon selling. Anyways, you can tame it. Sadly, the breeder is bad and sold way too early. I never sold until at least 12 weeks (3 months). At around 8 weeks I separated the males from the mom and baby females. This was so none would get pregnant. But, they all had hedgehogs with them (unless a litter had one boy only). They would learn from each other for another month as I handled all of them individual many times a day. Never once has a hedgehog bitten me. I have heard stories like yours, where it has happened. Luckily, your hedgehog is young at least. So, in time, it should be able to become tame. It may take months, but, be patient. Be very calm and quiet while handling; hedgehogs don't like loud noises or fast movements. Offer treats while out (they may not accept them at first, but, just offer). Do this many times a day, as often as you can for about 15 minutes or so. Use gloves if needed for a while.

      Jed Wright I got a mean hedgehog too. He has bitten me twice pretty bad but what I recommended is wash your hands before handling it cause if your hand smell like food it'll obviously bite thinking it's food and also try handling it even if you're scared cause he'll get tamer with time and patience 🙂

    • @zoecarrington2218
      @zoecarrington2218 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That isn’t too unusual fortunately! You’ve only had the hedgehog for 3 days (from when you posted this) and it’s still getting used to it’s new environment. Also remember that it’s an animal of prey and just because it bites or spikes you, doesn’t mean it doesn’t like you. It’s just scared. Hedgehogs are commonly very timid animals due to their extremely bad vision and very sensitive hearing. Also, it’s a rather young hedgehog, imagine just being taken from your mother and then transported into a complete new area. It’s bound to be scared.
      What I would suggest, is you handle it everyday (in the evening, when they’re awake) with a variety of treats, such as cooked meats, veg/fruit etc etc. Don’t try to rush things, just let the hedgehog get used to everything before interfering. Try not to pick up the hedgehog too much to ovoid stress and make the handling as quick as possible.
      I have two hedgehogs, a mother and daughter. I have discovered that the daughter, Poppy, is much more adventurous than her mother Primrose. Both are pretty friendly and once taken out of their enclosure, they open up and are little bundles of joy.
      Before you decide to give it back, give the hedgehog some time to settle in and take things slow. Take into consideration that it’s still a baby and has not only been taken from it’s mother and put into a completely new environment but also that it has incredibly bad vision and really sensitive hearing. Hope this helps!

      +MCMLXXXIX 1989 Best to only buy pets from good breeders or petstores when the pets are nice. Handle them first. Would you buy a dog or cat that was biting you?
