LOVE THIS EXTENSION CABLE!! I bought this cord four and a half months ago when I got my bolt. my rental has no drive way so I must park on the street. My street has two houses mine and an older couple with a garage. where i park has a retaining wall then my yard. my charger only reaches the car if I park backwards and I dont want a ticket for parking that way so this was the best option. if the charging port was on the passanger side it would have reached but this extension cable has worked great for us we have had it for four and a half months.
I have a couple of these. I am a contractor and usually have my trailer behind my pickup. I back into my driveway. So I use the extension cable to be able to plug in the pickup each night to charge for work each morning.
I can see it useful for contractors. Good point. I think it would be sweet to post up to a job site and be able to use the on-site electric to power the truck & tools and then drive home with a full tank.
@@diydrivenGAfor me, I can route the cable into my truck bed and just use a large lock to the hasp nearest the rear of the bed. The handle on either end can’t pass through, so unless they want to cut it it’s staying put. That said, although I have the lock in the truck for this reason, I’ve never bothered doing it. I’ll wait until one gets stolen before deciding it’s actually worth the effort.

50 A would be nice to have. With most cars capable of 48 A max, there is no chance to forget setting the current to 40 A or less, or software glitch that reverts to default 48 A causing any issues.

Because my EVSE (just inside garage door) only has a 23 foot cable I can’t reach the port on my ID.4 when behind even the shortest of our cars packed tight to the garage. I bought a custom made 60 foot 40 Amp "NACS" to J1772 extension many years ago for about $500. It has been nice from a peace of mind perspective, for traveling to hotels with L2 charging. I also bought it for use at Air B&Bs and for guests to use in my driveway. So far I have only used it a couple of times in about 6 years.
These cables defy NEC code in the USA which limits charging cables to 25' long unless they are using an integrated cable management system. NEC Article 625.17 Cords and Cables (C) Overall Cord and Cable Length. The overall useable length shall not exceed 7.5 m (25 ft)unless equipped with a cable management system that is part of a listed the electric vehicle supply equipment or electric vehicle charging system
I guess my other question is, do you think these should not be sold in the US? If so I can as my contact at EVdance to respond. I am thinking it is similar to using an electric extension cable on the plug side (NEMA 14/50)
@@thenetworkarchitectchannel - I'd think twice about using this at someone else's home or at a motel. Using it in an open parking lot, while you wait might be less risky, but who wants to sit and watch paint dry at level 2 rates. Might be a good tool for a roadside rescue for AAA that have a battery/level 2 invertor, but otherwise, I don't see this as having benefits that outweigh liability concerns. People manufacture hack electronics all the time, but in the world of high current electricity, it's a bad product to sell, IMO. To get down to it, the risk is more about running over it and long term liability factor of long cables not being carefully isolated, than about resistance from the longer run, though the original EVSE isn't tested to include that additional facctor.

Most cars have settings to lock the adapter to the car when charging or if the car is locked. Someone could still disconnect your extension from the EVSE cable. If you could get a locking mechanism on the recepticle end I'm not sure it's a good idea to block the hotels equipment from other users, fine for your private use though.
It would be nice if there was more street charging where you had to bring your own cable, like in many European cities. This cable would help serve that purpose. I hate street charging that has the cable attached to it because the cable is usually on the ground or not appropriately coiled up.
We have the J3400 standard in North America, which supports a "bring your own cable" EVSE standard, hopefully we will have some products available soon.
Oh, they were having a sale, I bought a 50A 40FT j1772 extension cable and got a tesla to j1772 adapter free. I'll actually test the temps when it arrives, hopefully Walter you'll test and update as well. As you know, I have to keep a check on whether the product they send you is the same as the one I actually purchased.
I was not aware of an option in the Cadillac Lyriq to adjust the amperage limits from within the car. Were you able to do this in the Cadillac? Thanks.
Nice, Walter! I've got a 50-ft. 240V extension cord, but it is thicker, heavier, and more cumbersome as the one you have, and it doesn't have those customized ends on it. Mine only has 14-50 connections for when and if I need to charge from an RV panel. BTW, have you received notification that your Volvo is now authorized for Supercharging? That's what the NACS webpage claims, but… well… you never know with Tesla.
I did not receive any notification from Volvo. There was an alert in the app msg, but I almost never go into the app. I actually heard from a viewer comment on a live stream last night and looked in the TesSC app and was able to confirm from there.
14-50 extension cables need an extra wire for the Neutral pin, which is not used for EV charging. This makes them heavier than needed. Also the extension is upstream of the EVSE's ground fault detection circuits, so there is no GFI protection. J1772 extension cables are protected by the EVSE GFI circuit. They also can be used at hardwire J1772 charging posts, making them more versatile.
A hotel that really wanted to go the extra mile to court EV drivers could keep a couple of these around in a storage room. When a driver complains to the front desk that the charger is blocked, the staff loans them the cable, and the driver is unblocked.
Thanks for showing us this product. I'm thinking of getting one of these so I can charge my fairly new Blazer EV outside of the garage when I get my level 2 charger installed. I am still a little (or maybe a lot) paranoid about the battery catching fire. Am I justified in thinking this way, or maybe the FUD has got to me? I really don't want to have to hear my anti-EV friends telling me "I told you so".
I would not invalidate someone's fears. Nor would I try to throw stats your way. I would say this. Which is more dangerous of catching fire. A vehicle that carries a tank of fluid engineered to ignite when vaporized that is almost always being shaken like a maraca or a car that runs on Duracell batteries?
Hey Walter are they reputable? Is there a warranty? Will it burn my house or hotel down? Have you used a heat gun after an hour or two to look at operating temp?
Does this lock or can it be removed by anyone passing by? Still ordering one as I have to swap cars around to get to the charger and can only charge inside. Added flexibility at home and where ever I go is worth it. BTW It seems like the 32a 21 ft is cheaper through Amazon as it has an additional $40 off coupon bringing it down to $132.

Welcome to new EV ownership. I think you will find it is an improvement from a gas car. ICE'ed or ICE'ing refers to an internal combustion engine (ICE) parking in a spot designated for EVs.

Anyone can remove it. There are other makers on Amazon who sell locks for the J1772 ends if you wish to add.
