  • NASA has raised urgent concerns over a worsening air leak aboard the International Space Station (ISS), which poses increasing risks to the crew's safety. While the specific cause remains unclear, the issue is tied to cracks in the Russian-built transfer compartment known as PrK. NASA attributes the cracks to multiple factors, including mechanical stress and material weaknesses, whereas Russia's Roscosmos believes the problem stems from high cyclic fatigue due to microvibrations.
Despite differing views, both agencies have implemented mitigation measures. NASA has suggested involving independent experts to determine the root cause, a recommendation it has already adopted, while awaiting Russia’s compliance. In the meantime, operational changes, such as closing certain hatches during specific procedures, are being enforced to manage risks. The incident has reignited concerns over the ageing ISS infrastructure, with its initial modules now over 25 years old and continuing to host international missions.
