Typhoon Atang (Olive) was also a devastating storm in the Philippines and was the first A named storm to be the retired, though he name Olive was not retired along with it. It is the only A named storm to be retired on the Philippines until Ambo (Vongfong) of last year
Rita is very underestimated, it had great environmental conditions. Considering the recon gaps, and found pressures below 880mbar on all of them, it’s safe to say that this reached over 200mph
I agree. Rita maintained a pressure below 900 for several days! What a consistent intensity. 175 mph according to the officials is just an understatement.
The chance of getting to an "R" name in the SWIO will be hard duo to how low activity it is. The furthest alphabet name they got was an "O" name in the form of Cyclone Odile in the 1993-1994 SWIO Cyclone season, and yeah that season was CRAZY because on how active this season really is at that time until the 2018-2019 season broke that record. And not only that is was the most active SWIO season, the season managed to produces a lot of major and one of the many major Cyclone in that season the star of the season was Cyclone Geralda which became the strongest ever recorded in the basin history at that time and also the strongest worldwide in 1994 until Cyclone Fantala in 2016 broke that record. In the end reaching the "R" name would be hard duo to the low activity, but if it succeed and yeah it would be record breaking.
@@juliusnepos6013 ohh that is why storms back then had taken the statistics of JTWC. Okay thanks! Buttt uhmmmm JMA aint estimating accurately sometimes- as what I have observed.
The thing that I am not sure about Rita 78 is the windspeeds. It had 175 MPH officially which I think was way too low. Based on the pressure 878 and the environmental factors around Rita at peak, I think its winds were around 200 - 215 MPH

Philippines could see another A name to be retired from this year.

1978, one of the craziest years officially by depression count, and featured Rita, one of the most intense TC’s in history.
Not as crazy as 1964 which generated 102 DEPRESSIONS

I have read in a reanalysis of typhoons with recon using KZC, Rita had 183 Knots in reanalysis
Aron 13 Thats insane! That’s like Nora level impressive.
However, it’s hard to say that this could’ve passed Mike, Olaf, and Gay. But it definitely could pass them in terms of strength
Rita must just be a cursed name, I mean a cat 5 typhoon and a cat 5 hurricane? How?!
The name Rita is also available on the SWIO, let's see what it will become once it's used.

Super Typhoon Rita (Kading) is the strongest storm of the season. It is also the wettest tropical cyclone in the PH history with over 400 mm of rain.
It is not the wettesr, not even in the top 10
Oh yes, excited for Super Typhoon Kading (intl. known as Rita)
Atlantic beasts like Irma, Wilma, Rita, and Sally were all WPAC beasts way back to the year of anglicized names over the basin until year 2000.
I wonder why they used anglicized names to name asian storms.
@@LunoRawke maybe because SEA countries haven’t contributed in naming such so as proxy, they used anglicized names.
Because JTWC based in Guam and Hawaiii that time was the monitoring agency for the area until the JMA took over
