Is it just me or was 2004 such an insane year for natural disasters? - Hyperactive Atlantic hurricane season with Charley, Frances, Ivan, and Jeanne causing massive destruction - One of the most active seasons of any basin ever in the Western Pacific in terms of ACE - Produced the strongest storm in the Southern Atlantic on record - The tragic tsunami in the Indian Ocean - Most tornadoes in a single year in the U.S. - Widest tornado on record at the time - Most hurricane-related tornadoes in the U.S. in a year (including Ivan, which produced the most tornadoes from any tropical cyclone) - White Christmas for the Gulf areas
And Cyclone Gafilo was the most instense storm in the southwest Indian basin that year. More Instense than any storms in 2004. Edit: 2/25/2023 also the 2004 North Indian Cyclone was the first season being named by the NIO.
Deaths or monetary damage don’t really matter when considering retirement, what really matters is something like damage relative to GDP and how bad the damage was. Which is why something like Kenna got retired with $101 million and 4 deaths
I’d have to disagree. After 2017, Kai-Tak and Tembin were retired mainly for the vast numbers of deaths they caused (though it is questionable why they didn’t retire Damrey). Sudal, as i previously mentioned, caused 0. While it did do a TON of damage compared to the GDP, it just doesn’t fit the high retirement standards the nwPac has.
Rananim, Aere, Songda, Tokage and Mufia were retired in the WSBPTS (What-Should-Be-Pacific-Typhoon-Season) World due to the deaths and damage caused by those storms. Rananim, Aere, Tokage, and Mufia were replaced with Rai, Locust, Haruka, and Minchi. However in the real world, Rananim along with Sudal and Tingting were retired. Sudal and Tingting in the WSBWPTS World will remain on the list for now. Choose replacement Name for Songda by replying and the replacement names must be associated with Vietnam. Foithong, Maewa, Mokran, and Nudgae will be replacing Prapiroon, Chebi, Toraji, and Nari respectively. The name Cosme wasn't used in this basin during 2004 (it was used in the Eastern Pacific in 2001 and 2007) ...unless you're talking about the typhoon named by the PAGASA, which I'm guessing you are.
