    A number of viewers have suggested the overly large choil at the base of the blade may be intended for striking a ferrocerium rod. Rather than repeat my response to each comment I will do so here. The choil edges are not sharp and are actually radiused with a 45 degree edge. It will not throw sparks from a ferro-rod. I would like to add that even if it was sharp enough to throw sparks I would consider it an unsafe practice to have the sharp edge of the knife next to my fingers as well as risking damage to the edge should it strike the ground or rock.

      Its a bummer because the lack of this knifes ability to throw sparks is what is keeping me from pulling trigger. Nice review. I have the QSP parrot as my edc.

    I wrote a fairly long winded comment, which seemed to disappear when I added a limp to the knife I suggested. Perhaps it’s set up that way? Anyway, I’ll try to keep it shorter.
    Solid review Mark, as always. It is a pretty knife, nice thick handle, and if it’s a lot cheaper than non Chinese blades, then I guess it’s worth it. Though I try hard to avoid Chinese stuff, sometimes the price we pay is hard to justify.
    I know you like that full grind, and I understand the benefits, but all I really see is how much work it would take to get rid of a dent from an accident with it, such as hitting a stone or something. That’s a lot of metal to grind.
    I’d like to mention you "visibility loop". It’s a good idea, but to me a non essential loop hanging on my belt is just waiting to one day get caught on something and pull out. I’d rather a single line, or better yet, a small braid so I could have a little extra cordage in a pinch.
    As for a review, I’d kinda like to see the Field 90 Puukko with the upturned spine from varusteleka. It has a smaller than we’re used to blade, but I bet it’s long enough, but that upturned spine I’m not so sure about because it changes the point.
    Hope you’re doing well. I’m at home recovering from Covid, and doing well……Geeze, this was kinda long anyway.☺️……oh, there is a Buck knife in the same category as this. They sell it at MEC, and I believe Canadian tire for around $100. If you could get your hands on one of those it’d be cool too.

    • @MarkYoungBushcraft
      @MarkYoungBushcraft  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Jim. I have been looking at the puukko knives from Varustelika since you mentioned you bought one. May get one yet. Could it be the Buck Selkirk? Also on my list if I can get it. BTW... I expect you are aware of the soon to be released Firebox Freestyle?😉

    Could't you use the "sharpening choil" to strike a fire stick?

      Using a sharpening choil is generally not a safe way to strike a ferro rod. High risk of injury or damage to the blade edge. Thanks for commenting

    I really like this knife but I'm stuck between choosing this knife and the Ruike F118 Jager. I just want to get either one as a companion knife to my large chopper, my RTAKII. I like D2 steel and I really don't find it that difficult to sharpen. I don't care for 'supersteels' on companion knives & folding knives at all, I mean I'm not that lazy to sharpen my knife from time to time, and I'm certainly not using my knives for torture tests either, I'll leave that up to the the spoiled people to do that. this knife looks perfect for a companion knife to do smaller tasks and it does come with a real kydex sheath. It looks like a mini Becker BK7 which I also like.

    • @MarkYoungBushcraft
      @MarkYoungBushcraft  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I see the Ruike as more of a hunting knife and the Bison as more of a general purpose knife. QSP has a new knife, the Canary, that I have a review on and will release soon that I like better than either of the other two. Thanks for commenting

    This knife is not for me (sheath not reversible for left hand use and jimping).
    Reshaping the handle is something I like to do, and on an inexpensive knife it is painless, should I break something...

    I have two D2 folding knives from China, I have no way of knowing whether they are actual D2. There’s a guy on TH-cam who has done metallurgy test on some D2 blades from China, some of them weren’t D2. I prefer regular stainless steel for ease of sharpening. I like the looks of the knife.

    • @MarkYoungBushcraft
      @MarkYoungBushcraft  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The thing about Chinese steels claiming to be D2 or 440C, etc is that the meet the recipe but are not from regular steel makers. It is also hard to know what the heat treat is like until put to the test. I expect some companies cheat on what the steel actually is. I expect it is safer to stay with companies that have a good reputation and warranty. Thanks for commenting

    So basically what you are saying is that this is a DIY knife kit that can be made into a serviceable knife with some work? ;-)
    When I just checked, this knife is going for $80 US. A Mora Companion can be had for far less than $20 US. Why is this considered a budget knife when it sells for more than four times the price of a Mora?

    • @MarkYoungBushcraft
      @MarkYoungBushcraft  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The DIY comments are my personal preferences as the knife is perfectly functional as is. I see this knife more on the level of the Mora Garberg as it has an upgrade in steel and is full-tang. The Garberg sells for $130.00 CAD. I will be reviewing my Moras as part of this series. Thanks for commenting John

    • @JohnTarbox
      @JohnTarbox 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MarkYoungBushcraft Please take my comments with a grain of salt. ;-) I comment as much with the knowledge that all comments, good, bad, os inane, help with the TH-cam algorithm.
      With respect to the steel, are you saying that this Chinese steel is superior to the Swedish steel that Mora uses in the companion knife? If so, that is high praise indeed.

    • @MarkYoungBushcraft
      @MarkYoungBushcraft  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JohnTarbox John, I take no offence to your comments at all. As you know Mora's carbon steel is a 1095 equivalent and their 12C27 is a good but not high-end stainless steel. I really like their upgrade to 14C28N used in the Garberg. Having said all that, D2 is supposed to be superior to all of them at edge retention if properly heat treated. D2 is not a true stainless steel but it is more stain resistant than 1095 is. I am not praising the Chinese D2 , rather what the steel should be if it is truly D2 and properly heat treated. I cannot say this knife is better than a Garberg but I can say it should be, and at a lesser price. In the video I do point out reports that it is not a good heat treat but again, I can not confirm it is bad unless I test to destruction against another knife in D2 known to be properly heat treated
