  • We've traveled all across Mexico & never experienced a lovable cultural melting pot like Oaxaca City.
►If you loved this video, watch our other videos from Oaxaca! • Tangerine Travels in O...
The state of Oaxaca is known for its sensational gastronomy, vivid colors, astonishing nature, and beautiful colonial architecture. We had the absolute pleasure of exploring Oaxaca City for one week.
This Mexico travel video includes our adventures from the first half of the week. We enjoyed our time in Oaxaca so much, we could hardly put the camera down!! All we wanted to do was showcase every little and big reason why this city quickly stole our hearts and became one of our favorite cities in Mexico.
WHERE TO EAT IN OAXACA CITY, MEXICO
    1. Boulenc - This restaurant and bakery is to die for! Boulenc not only has gluten-free options, but their coffee, cocktails, and food selection is top-notch. We went here so many times in our short week.
    2. Expendio Tradiciòn - This Mezcalaría had delicious food and cocktails in a trendy atmosphere.
    3. Restaurante Catedral - This restaurant has delicious coffee and breads, plus traditional Oaxacan food we loved!
    4. Los Danzantes - This is an upscale Oaxacan restaurant with absolutely delicious traditional/regional dishes.
WHAT TO DO IN OAXACA CITY, MEXICO
    1. Casa de las Artesanías - This huge store close to the city center has thousands of traditional products. They have black clay pottery, textiles, alebrijes galore, leather, woven baskets, bags, and more.
    2. Visit the Oaxaca City Zocalo - I can't tell you how many times we went to the city center. You'll find vendors, street food, live music, and all the people watching you could ever desire. Plus, there are cafes and restaurants aplenty. It's a great place to start your adventures in Oaxaca.
    3. Find a Mezcalería - Mezcal is one of Oaxaca's specialties. We recommend enjoying a tasting at a local Mezcalería. There are dozens of them across the city!
    4. Try as much food as you can - Oaxaca is also well known for it's rich food culture. Try as much/many Tlayudas, types of mole, coffee, chocolate, and other regional dishes as you possibly can!
    5. Soak in the colonial architecture and history - Visit Templo de Santo Domingo, walk up and down the streets, and visit some local museums. Oaxaca City is filled with history.
WHERE TO STAY IN OAXACA CITY, MEXICO
We stayed at an Airbnb like we normally do while traveling Mexico. If you are new to Airbnb, you can get $40 off your first stay (or the equivalent in your currency) with our referral link: abnb.me/e/yML8JvquLU

    ABOUT US (MADDIE & JORDAN)
In January 2018, we sold everything we owned in the US (except our husky Laska & what fit in our tiny, tangerine Prius C3) to travel the world-starting with Mexico. Since then, we've been making travel videos about our life in Mexico and the new experiences we encounter while traveling the world. I absolutely loved Oaxaca. True story I asked a cop for directions to a post office and he jumped on the back of my motorcycle and guided me through the streets blowing his whistle at people to move so we could get to the post office. Now that was 43 years ago but what a great memory.

There are so many wonderful places despite the negative.

They took a great leap ahead- but so smooth perhaps the public does not see honest vulnerability, hyperlapse usage, time lapse, playfulness, super strong continuity. They are getting much better at establishing far away what they are walking up to, then capturing that which was just established from farther away. Tricky to do this and not offend locals?

I counted fifty different effects, hyperlapse or time lapse segments, lots of captioning, they put many hours in- now they can do it again, but twice as easy, I hope. So much good stuff I keep forgetting about the dragon special effect- and such a hoot! It was what I call a Joke Grenade- the person does not get hit immediately, but laughter spreads in a circle around those that do get it, then everyone is knocked dead with laughter.

I've been to around 30 cities in Mexico over about a 25 year period and Oaxaca is either at, or very close to the top of the list. It's one of Mexico's MUST-VISIT cities. And deserves a full week. The food alone is reason to visit.
It sounds like the airbnb was a dud. I usually love airbnb but there are lots of decent, inexpensive hotels within one or two blocks of the Zocalo and I would recommend staying in one of those. Definitely, the closer you are to the Zocalo the better. It's the place to be.
BTW when it comes to cards, bringing the machine to the table is a fairly recent development. Credit card info theft used to be common. It happened to me once in Guadalajara. But that was over 10 years ago.
And Maddie, you've got to learn to become a night person. Nights are when everything happens. Everywhere in Mexico. Oaxaca's Zocalo at night is not to be missed!

@@TangerineTravels Have enjoyed your vlog for some time now--always informative. I am looking forward to the one on your infestation. I looked up these critters on cdc.gov and they seem to be passed by fecal contamination. Elsewhere I have heard that the dust in the streets can be a source. The recommendation was to not eat where there is dust in the air. Another old hand advised that handling paper money can make you sick. He said that cleaning his hands like a madman with Purell after handling money and before eating improved his health. As you noted below, I have also heard that people routinely get treatment once or twice a year 'just because'.
We try to use cash whenever possible and never let a credit (or debit!!) card out of our possession or out of our sight. I have seen others ripped off this way. We learned this when we traveled a lot and we just kept doing it after we came home.
