Because males are higher on the hierarchy, females will get bullied and criticized by them if the females are in their age group or younger. Of course, age is also part of the hierarchy so parents and older people will criticize and henpeck and order around their sons and younger people. In-laws, especially mother-in-laws to married women (daughter-in-law is low on the totem pole) feel entitled to boss around daughters in law. I worked in Korea for 6 yrs and was told I needed to lose weight by a complete stranger during my first month there. This auntie heard me talking in accented korean and asked where Im from and told me I would look prettier if I lose a bit of "face fat". 😂 I also had a Malaysian co-worker. Shes only 4'11", chubby and she totally hated how the other employees would say "awww, cute" everytime they see her. Even mimicked her "penguin walk". It isn't just Korean men its Korean people in general especially city folks.

I am a Korean woman. when I was in the middle school, boys bulled my face badly. but no one helped me, even the teacher. not a single time. worst thing was I liked one of boys bullied me. so I blamed myself, hated and tried to change my face. but it never work it out, so my whole life became miserable. after 20years from that memory, I am still trying to love myself as it is, finally could have the opinion they were wrong and bad.

As a Korean male, I do hear some ridiculous things guys around me do look for… height, weight, hair length, (even heard a guy mention calves and elbows, like they need to be nice) they set a strict standard to look for. i had to clown on them(the guys) telling them ‘you aint no idol/actor urself. As a Korean-american myself, I relate to this! I don't get along with native Korean speakers for many reasons. They're very impatient with me on my Korean fluently level, so they don't really associate with me, and I'm not "cool" in their eyes. I also don't live by their standards and culture because I was mostly raised in the States. I also stopped going to Korean churches because of how they love to shame everyone on their flaws and sins. I know a lot of Asian-Americans can understand what I mean.

I worked in south korea from 1999 to 2003 and it's really how bad bully culture in the country even among their own people, especially when you are younger and not good looking. I’m SEA and I works with many Korean colleagues, most of whom are men. Some people always stare at me and other female colleagues. They scrutinize, judge the appearance and outfit of us, and that look is really rude.

There is a hmm I think staph type infection that can cause ADHD though it's uncommon something like the immune system adapts to the infection to counter it but it matches something in the brain so then the immune system starts attacking that (most ADHD is genetic), sometimes I really wish the super ableist people would develop it and realise how hard it is to try and function. i used to have a Korean friend, she was a new student and i know what it's like being new in a country who doesn't speak your first language, so i befriended her, she was really timid and nice. we used to hangout at my place, then one time she said her parents invited me at their place. but after meeting her parents, a week later, she treats me differently.. bc she's suddenly not allowed to be friends with me, turns out her parents said im someone who will be a bad influence bc i have big bones, eats a lot and is on the chubbier side. 🙃

I had one adult student from SK whom I taught English. He said that I'd look prettier if I lose some face fat. Told him that my bf doesn't have a problem with it and I high doubt if anyone wants to date him judging by his face. He ended the class right away and had me reported to my boss. He berated me about attitude to which I replied "If he only kept his opinions to himself, I would probably respect him." Fortunately, Boss understood but he told me to never do it again.

😢 The real problem is that it's all accepted. You can say something is "just part of the culture" but when you have a culture that mixes being mean disguised as "just being truthful" along with absolutely ridiculous "beauty" standards and not being able to stand up for yourself or others because it's impolite etc... it's a recipe for an incredibly toxic mentality across the board. The fact is that plastic surgery is an irrelevant variable because most Koreans are just straight up attractive because of the fact that they take care of themselves very well. I worked in Korea for 6 yrs and was told I needed to lose weight by a complete stranger during my first month there. This auntie heard me talking in accented korean and asked where Im from and told me I would look prettier if I lose a bit of "face fat". 😂 I also had a Malaysian co-worker. Shes only 4'11", chubby and she totally hated how the other employees would say "awww, cute" everytime they see her. Even mimicked her "penguin walk".

As a Korean-american myself, I relate to this! I don't get along with native Korean speakers for many reasons. They're very impatient with me on my Korean fluently level, so they don't really associate with me, and I'm not "cool" in their eyes. There is a hmm I think staph type infection that can cause ADHD though it's uncommon something like the immune system adapts to the infection to counter it but it matches something in the brain so then the immune system starts attacking that (most ADHD is genetic), sometimes I really wish the super ableist people would develop it and realise how hard it is to try and function.

😢 The real problem is that it's all accepted. This explains why more Korean women are now dating foreigners. If the men treat their women like shit then the women will find men who can treat them better.
Also this attitude starts at the home and school. I have met Koreans who are against this toxicity and all because their parents taught them better, also they were educated in international schools, meaning that they had experience with other cultures to help broaden their viewpoint.
