    This episode gives me goosebumps just thinking about it. The ending is the sweetest, smartest and most genuinely tear jerking moment in all of television for me. I can’t explain it, but the payoff with “do it for her” gives me a lump in my throat. I’ve not even watched the whole video and just typing this out, knowing that it’s coming... I feel like I’m about to start sobbing haha

    Great video! Honestly, And Maggie Makes Three is my favorite Simpsons episode. It's a perfect combination of a funny and relatable story with some great insight into what is basically Homer's motivation to keep his job in the rest of the series. The humor and outlandish gags help break up the drama. A perfect balance between the heartfelt Season 2 style and the wacky 5/6 style. I'm glad you decided to revisit this one. Even if it isn't your favorite I'm still glad that you gave it the video it deserves, though I still feel that you were on to something in your original video.

    "Marge, the dog doesn't count as a kid." - Separate Vocations, Season 3

      To be fair, she doesn’t do a lot in episodes, but that makes sense because she’s a baby that doesn’t talk.
      A reason why I like episodes such as “Itchy and Scratchy and Marge,” “A Streetcar Named Marge,” and even “Moe Baby Blues” is because Maggie actually contributes to the plot, which seems like somewhat of a rarity.

    Simpsons mystery:
    What if this is the reason Homer can't get fired from the plant? Even if he leaves for days or even weeks at a time to do other jobs.
    Burns controls almost everything in Springfield.
    He knows Homer isn't there at the plant and he doesn't care. He knows Homer will have to come back. When he said you're here forever, he meant that. The contract makes him essentially own Homer for life, even if Homer isn't there for days or weeks. He has to come back eventually. Burns enjoys this control so much that he will never get rid of him.
    Burns also doesn't care how the plant runs. He pays off the inspectors regardless, and he has a complete Monopoly on the tower for the whole town (and likely more). So Homer not being there to keep things *safe* doesn't matter the majority of the time.
    He's just a toy to burns. The fact he has these other adventures but always has to come back to this job that he hates probably makes it even more amusing for burns, who of course is aware of whatever else Homer is doing. Burns has a hand in every sector of Springfield, it's even been mentioned in episodes and video games that he has cameras throughout Springfield. He knows what's going on.

    • @sonicmastersword8080
      @sonicmastersword8080 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      SmashTurtle It’s probably more in line with the fact that Homer has the job as Saftey Inspector because Burns is keeping Homer on a leash from going on a crusade against him.

      That's right. The powerplant shot Mr. Burns

    • @alvexok5523
      @alvexok5523 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Saskaruto16, just one question though, if Mr. Burns has Homer on a leash, knows he'll always come back when he leaves, and knows that he owns him for life, why does he keep forgetting who Homer is then?

    • @Saskaruto16
      @Saskaruto16 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@alvexok5523 So a few possible explanations.
      Firstly: that gag was more so used before the "who shot Mr. Burns" episode which took placd in season 6. So it's possible that this is less of an issue now. For instance, Burns has shown to know him and his family multiple times since season 6. For instance in Season 8, Mountain of Madness, he recognizes Homer and his family, refers to him by name many times, etc.
      Now while it may have been brought back a few times as a joke at some point after that since there are 30 seasons I'm not going to bother going through them all to check, we could chock it up to the writers not knowing their own cannon and screwing up (if you want to debate if anything is canon after this many years and many writer changes, 4th wall events, etc), or one of the other following reasons.
      Second: there is a fan theory that Mr.Burns was concussed by Homer at one point and that he has permanent brain damage that causes memory issues. I don't like this theory and don't think it lines up, but I thought I would mention it. Though the brain does tie in to what I think a logical canon reason could be.
      Thirdly: He is over 100 years old. He loses track of things. He's said before that he's in his 80s, but he's actually over 100. That means at least sometimes his memory is not all there if he's occationally 20+ years off in how old he believes he is. In "The Spingfield files" (also season 8) we see the insane medical procedure he undergoes weekly, just to keep him in the shape he is in and that it leaves him looking/sounding like an alien for hours afterward, and other episodes have hinted at or directly said he's had other procedures done and organs replaced as well to stay alive.
      It's not unreasonable that as the week goes on his mind deteriorates along with his body until it gets boosted again, or that at any random point he could again forget someone's name or even or what year it is. When he tried to put together a baseball team for the power plant he wanted to recruite a bunch of players that were dead because his concept of the passage of time is so off he not only thought they were alive but in playable shape.
      Now you might ask why he can remember old stories of how people died or where he was 30+ years ago. That's because the further back the memory the more deeply ingrained it is. Old people with certain medical conditions that can result in deteriorating memory can almost always remember the people/events of their past, it's the things happening more recently and in the present that they don't remember to the same degree.
      Forth: We could get into the timeline and that in theory every episode is somehow supposed to take place in a short amount of time because no one ages, but that's a whole mess with multiple contradicting examples because like I said in the first paragraph: the writers don't actually care about canon at all and will change/rewite things because they don't know, do it for a story, or even just a one off joke.
      These videos and fan theories are just for fun so even a well crafted one likely has at least one contradictory example over 30 years of various writers. Hell if you go back far enough Smithers was black.
      At the end of the day: It's canon if you want it to be.

    If there's any video I wish I could re-write, it would be the "And Maggie Makes Three" review. It didn't get a TON of negative feedback (just a few people yelling at me for the forgettable thing)... But I think I editorialized too much. I kinda made the review more about my personal confusion about it, rather than the episode itself. 60 seconds isn't a great format for the kind of review I wrote. I wanted to re-visit this one to give it a more thorough look.

      In media, we often get the message that work is something exciting and fulfilling, but the truth is there are millions of Homers out there, men and women working jobs they don't enjoy because they love their families, and this episode is an awesome tribute to them. didn't homer become safety inspector in season 1's homer's odyssey after maggie was born?....and isn't the reason he takes the job not serious is cause burns made him lie and say his plant is safe when it isn't so homer could get his old well paying job back? so he resents burns for it?..

    There was technically Rosebud before this. There isn't a HUGE exploration of dynamic between Homer and Maggie (it's largely a Burns episode) but it does show a similar deal, Homer will put himself in a miserable position to make Maggie happy. In hindsight it's dumbfounding there's episodes where Homer can barely even remember Maggie, he takes a LOT of crap for her sake.

    Confession: I actually didn't notice the "Do it for her" message the first time I saw this episode because I was too busy looking at all those cute photos of Maggie (I'm also not a native English speaker but that wasn't really the reason).
    I'm usually not the biggest fan of the (unironically) sappy endings in Simpsons episodes, but they can be great if there's a clever joke to lighten the sappiness. The "Daddy" ending from Lisa's First Word is already among the best ones because it's simultaneously a funny callback joke and a genuinely sweet moment, but I think "Do it for her" tops that by being really sweet, a clever callback AND a clever sight gag. It's like this hat trick of Simpsons endings. It tecnichally also offers a bit of nice world-building by revealing us what's supposedly always "behind the camera" in front of Homer whenever we see him at his work (although other episodes probably contradict it).

    I love Homer’s character so much here. I think it’s genuinely one of the best interpretations of how he ticks. The Burns scene where he does such horrible things as take his drink off his coaster is to me one of the best way to show off his aggression. Yeah he’s being kind of a jerk, but it’s to someone like Mr. Burns, and it’s so minor that it’s genuinely funny.
    I love his enthusiasm for his bowling job, I love his care for his children, I love his relationship with Marge. I think they hit his character flawlessly. It’s great.

    I remember thinking to myself how I dislike modern Simpsons for having Homer frequently forget about Maggie, and when I said that one Twitter, someone else said they dislike this episode because Homer has always forgotten about Maggie on occasion, even in early Simpsons, and the ending felt too smultzy and disconnected from that. I'm starting to think they might have a point; even though "DO IT FOR HER" is now a meme, I can't think of many other instances where Homer has this special connection with Maggie... Maybe I just need to watch more Simpsons to be sure of this, like I remember one episode where Maggie is outright scared of Homer and Homer tries to fix that, but other than that, there's not much.

      BigFatCock He went to Mr. Burns in Season3. He shouted at Mr. Burns that he is an "EMPLOYEE WHO WILL LICK HIS BUTT AND CALL IT ICE-CREAM", Mr. Burns gave it to him and said that he will remember his name. In season 1, he got fired, went suicidal then start to become a protest junkie. When he led a protest on the plant safety, Burns hired him back, gave him a raise and put him in sector 7-G as a safety inspector. It is a dig on real-life activists.

      @Showsni 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      You could chalk that up to Homer being an unreliable narrator. Technically they don't mention his job title in this episode, so the only real error is showing the wrong workstation (as he isn't yet the Safety Inspector). A more egregious error is having pictures of the children on the wall before they're born!

    Do you think you will go back and do extra seconds for some more of your old reviews? If you do episodes like last exit to Springfield and Homer at the bat might be worth expanding on because they are classics and it has been some years now since you reviewed them.

    • @TheRealJims
      @TheRealJims  7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Yeah, I hope I can revisit a few more to go more in depth on some of them. I wanna mostly do new stuff and not keep re-treading old ground, but it's worth doing revisits now and again. I know "22 Short Films About Springfield" and "Trilogy of Error" didn't get traditional reviews, so they would be good candidates as well.

    Maggie is in a weird place considering there's not many way to use her in the plot besides as something to be taken care of or to work harder to provide for. You can't really go very deep in her relationship with any of the family members outside of unconditional love considering she can't even talk. I'm surprised they haven't done an episode about Homer using (or abusing) her supposed skill with guns considering that's one of her only character quirks outside of normal baby stuff.

    My whole life I never fully understood that screw-the-audience joke with Patty and Selma because it was mistranslated in the Spanish dub, so that it sounded like they actually called everyone from A through Z. My guess is the translators opted for the most "logical" phrasing, possibly thinking the actual joke made no sense.

    Did you seriously just gloss over the plot holes of Homer already working as a Nuclear Safety Inspector when he was just a lowly Nuclear Technician when the show started (and Maggie was already born) and how Ruth Powers attends to Marge's baby shower despite she being introduced (therefore the Powers meeting the Simpsons) in S4?

  • @bucwhovian8305

    • @TheRealJims
      @TheRealJims  7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yeah. After so many years, I just work under the assumption that anyone looking up this episode after the fact is familiar with it already

    • @bucwhovian8305
      @bucwhovian8305 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I did kind of guessed that from the fact you don’t even mention the punchline to the “screw the audience” joke, as you call it. BTW not sure if you came up with that term, because I’ve not heard it before, if so nice name!
      On the subject of that joke, the delivery of the punchline, where Selma reveals she’s only called those two people, has always bothered me. It’s way too quick and I know a lot of people that missed it. Maybe if they had taken it a bit further it could have worked, like come up with some arbitrary reason why the two people she called, also happened to be the first and last names in the phone book, or why she sounds so tried after making the second call.

    • @TheRealJims
      @TheRealJims  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Haha, that punchline thing was partially me feeling awkward describing/explaining jokes. I always feel like I'm killing a joke when describing a punchline. I'm not positive on the origin of the term "screw-the-audience" joke, but I think David Mirkin (showrunner of this season) refers to them that way in a lot of his Simpsons commentaries. I know he is pretty fond of that type of joke.
      I kinda like the quickness and deadpan delivery of the punchline. I feel like the show these days is too eager to show its work sometimes with its jokes, so I like these examples where they just try to catch people off balance.

    • @Veelasiren
      @Veelasiren 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When I re-watched this episode recently, I sat there wondering why she looked so tired after calling only two people. Then it hit me, and I realized how clever this joke is! Her looking so tired isn't just a fake-out for the punchline, it actually makes sense for her to look like that.
      She called the two biggest gossips in town. BOTH of them likely blabbed gossip to her for a loooong time, and she was probably relaying the juiciest scandals to her sister in the background. That's why she looked so tired!
