  • Fred MacMurray and Barbara Stanwyck in a superbly crafted scene from Billy Wilder's 1944 film noir classic, 'Double Indemnity'.
    An example of typical Raymond Chandler dialogue in the script; after Walter (MacMurray) comes on a little too strong:
    Phyllis (Stanwyck): There's a speed limit in this state, Mr. Neff. 45 miles an hour.
    Walter (MacMurray): How fast was I going, officer?
    Phyllis: I'd say around 90.
    Walter: Suppose you get down off your motorcycle and give me a ticket.
    Phyllis: Suppose I let you off with a warning this time.
    Walter: Suppose it doesn't take.
    Phyllis: Suppose I have to whack you over the knuckles.
    Walter: Suppose I bust out crying and put my head on your shoulder.
    Phyllis: Suppose you try putting it on my husband's shoulder.
    Walter: That tears it...

    The original script actually went further, showing Neff’s arrest and his eventual execution in a gas chamber. Wilder even shot the gas chamber ending, but cut it for two reasons: The PCA was concerned the details were too gruesome, and Wilder himself felt that it was ultimately unnecessary to the story.

    This scene [as is almost the entire screenplay for 'Double Indemnity'] is pure Raymond Chandler. Despite the fact that Wilder and Chandler didn't get on at all - Chandler actually quit the film at one point, writing a lengthy list of things he disliked about the director by way of a resignation letter - Wilder persuaded Chandler to return as he recognised his gift with words.

      "Double Indemnity" was one of the few movies where Fred MacMurray played a heel. He was very hesitant about playing the role. Billy Wilder was desperate for an actor who could play the role of Walter Neff. A dozen actors turned down the role. Billy Wilder persisted in getting Fred MacMurray to play the role. Fred MacMurray came to find that "Double Indemnity" was one of the best movies he ever made.

      It was supposed to be unnatural: In Cameron Crowe's book of interviews with Wilder, the director discusses the accoutrements of Stanwyck's character: "I questioned [her] wig, but it was proper, because it was a phony wig. It was an obviously phony wig. And the anklet-the equipment of a woman, you know, that is married to this kind of man."

      I've heard people say that for years, but I don't think it's true. I found some quotes from Billy Wilder that describe exactly why he chose that wig for her in this picture (if you look on the wiki page for DI you'll find some of them). Basically, he thought it was perfect for the Phyllis character because it highlights how sleazy and phony she is.

    • @mosesberkowitz3298
      @mosesberkowitz3298 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly right. I just bought the collectors edition DVD, and the wig was Billy Wilder‘s idea. It’s a cheesy looking wig on purpose-it’s supposed to reflect the low-class brassiness of Phyills. It’s not flattering to Barbara Stanwyk at all.
