Vida longa Beirut!
I am elated that I have stumbled on to this musical movement. My musical coming-of-age was in the 80s and 90s and ranged from alternative music such as The Smiths, REM, Bauhaus, The Cult, Industrial music scene, and 80s West coast and east coast punk rock. And coming from a patriarchal society I was also steeped in Heavy Metal and Grunge. I stopped listening to music for several years. Now this new generation of music is helping me to feel hopeful once again..
Beirut, Zach Condon, he's a gem, his voice, his style, his melodies, his mind , his soul, it's MADE for music, he's made to make this harmonies and melodies. This is pure magic.
The first song, for him, is something very difficult. He was dealing with one of the most difficult languages, and he gets it very well. I'm from Brazil, and listen to that was just incredible.
Lyrics in English of "O Leãozinho" I really want to see you, little lion walking under the sun I really like you little lion it makes me sad, little lion for my lonely heart it's enough to have found you on my way young leon, ray of the morning captivating my look like a magnet
Nobody was singing? How is it possible?! One day, when I will have the honour to see them live, someone will have to keep my mouth close!! Their music is purely magic, I love it! And Zach voice is always amazing.
2:28 for the cover they made Not that you shouldn't watch the video ( inspiring, eye-opening, captivating), but that song is so addictive, I had to make a shortcut to it.The songs they play always evoke such passionate and instinctively awakening impulses to dance and be happy. This video is the best quality of video, quality of sound, and quality of music I have ever heard. Perfect, this version is on iTunes.
This band is one of the many reasons I love the randomness of TH-cam related/suggested videos. This band was not on my radar without you, and for that I am grateful.
Thanks, Zach Condon! I love MPB and Bossa Nova! I love Caetano Veloso! I love Beirut!
Congrats!
Wow, so cool to watch a so inspired and talentous band like beirut speak about brazilian music in a so respectfull, honorable way. Very important for us brazilians to learn how to respect more our own music because the whole word do it and sometimes more then ourselves... and they like the right guys like chico buarque, jorge ben, caetano... The true "MPB"
I don't get why everybody is only focusing on postcards and sunday smile, you guys are obviously not paying close enough attention to this first song which was pure brilliant. Don't get me wrong, those are two of my favorite songs, but I liked the first one way better.
It's Chico Buarque, a great brazilian singer, and the song that he is talking about is "Roda Viva". This music is a riot against the military government, that exists between 60's -80's. Listen:
***** i know!! when i received a notification for their new song on spotify i was like wahhhhhhhhh???!!! It was released the day after my bday!! And on my bday they announced their show in L.A. which i have tickets for!!! Talk about awesome!! 😁
Really hard to portuguese people to understand :( But I imagine that the whole objective was to sing a song for brasilian people. So, I guess, its all right. I once heard Zach speaking Portuguese in Portugal. No one understood his "brasilian-ammerricann" accent or what the hell he was saying, but we were happy, nonetheless. ;)

It is interesting hear he singing in portuguese, with a strong accent or not it was really well..and the music of his choice can't sound bad at all, Caetano Veloso is a great singer as Chico Buarque.... Nice =)

they are absolutely beautiful. friend of mine saw them at bonnaroo festival. heard they are amazing live. i wish i could've seen that
Great show, if only to remember that the trumpet sends Postcards into the pantheon of eternal truths expressed through sound.
had a great laugh on Zach commenting "thats the way you do it" because thats exactly what my naughty dog Midas on nmy cats :D

I'm glad they've recorded this song (Leãozinho). It's one of the gratest brazilian song composed by one of the gratest brazilian musician
Eu quase morri quando ouvi isso.. *-* Poucos artistas reconhecem assim a nossa língua, o nosso verdadeiro valor.. Enfim. :))
Thank you so much for adding this. I admire every little added hum Zach does to pull the whole melody together :)

This is the best version of Sunday Smile and Postcards that I've ever heard. I love this band,
I love it when the cello goes into arco, it's just beautiful, and you can see it on Zach's face!

"My Family's Role in the World Revolution". It's off of the Lon Gisland EP.

Good cover of leaozinho, even though he paused a lot during the song, but considering he doesn't speak portuguese it came out better then i thought!
It's on the Red Hot Rio compilation album..
You're exactly right bud, it's the opening melody.
I'm Brazilian, so I know pretty much well the musicians he mentioned. He talks about Jorge ben, caetano velloso and Chico buarque
