To be honest, it can be really hard to know when to get off, if you haven't seen the route many times before. Just having seen the bus station from the outside or the other side of the street don't mean you recognize it from inside the bus.
I live in Montana. I've had to wake up at 5:30, walk 2 miles downhill to reach the bus stop, spend an hour on the bus before I get to school, and then spend an hour on the bus, and walk to miles uphill to my house to get back home again since I was in 4th grade. I've run into bears walking up the hill too!
I lived in the states for a year (I was six, my dad worked at a Uni and mom wasn't gonna stay here in Europe alone with three kids for a year) and our bus driver had a list of all the kids, they knew our names and knew exactly where each of us lived and that was the only stop we were allowed to get off. Our teachers had a list if your parents ok'd you going to another kids home after school and they'd let the bus drivers know. There were lists on who got brought by their parents, who walked and who took the bus. We always had the same busdriver (except on wednesdays but still, the wednesday bus driver was still always the same) and they had another person with them who had a clip board with names, They marked who got on and who got off. It was terrifyingly efficient. They also dropped each kid off in front of their house. This story seems wild to me.
