Thessaloniki has a new super modern metro 🚇 system combined with a museum in the stations 2nd to its Greek capital of Athens. Coming from a Canadian from Toronto.
No my friend Athens has made a museum from thousand of fragments they found and it's obvious. In Thessaloniki they found the entire Hellenistic roman byzantine ottoman period of the city. The hole city. Think that at Roman and byzantine periods Thessaloniki was a huge and important city second only to Constantinople. Athens was a village that period. Had ruins from the ancient history it has. Big difference
This looks super nice. A lovely new network that seems to have assembled all the newest forms of metro infrastructure worldwide. Feels a lot like the trains in many Asian cities
yes, all 13 stations of line 1 are underground and also the 5 new line 2 stations that will be opened in late 2025 will also be underground. Probably future extensions of line 2 to the airport might have parts above ground but this is not yet confirmed

I got a lift on December 3 2024, from New Helvetia station to Venizelou one and I very much enjoyed the ride.In the years to come more and more stations will be entering our metro and finally will be bigger, better and more efficient . The dire straits in transportation have been over
Greece's politicians, ever the experts, are now comparing this trainwreck to Denmark. Meanwhile, in Thessaloniki, the metro broke down and left passengers walking through tunnels like they’re in the Walking Dead😂😂
"plans",as in someone thought of it? Real plans started in the 80's but E.U was unwilling to fund and then they found a whole ancient town when digging. That took a long time to figure out. Today a whole station is built around an ancient road which was left intact and people can admire it inside the station. You tube "venizelou station Thessaloniki metro" to see it, it's something globally unique. Then the economic crisis hit in 2008 and everything stopped. Lots of problems caused that delay.
Do you really think Greece has no money? We are doing just fine my friend. This Metro System started construction in late 2006, then the country fell deep into crisis and stopped the construction, then it started again but due to archeological findings and other construction difficulties and political disagreements it slowed down quite a bit. All those problems were now slowed and the current government did everything possible to finish this long awaited metro. Next year the Line 2 extension is opening with 5 more km and 5 new stations. It is funded by both Greece and the European Union and we can absolutely afford it

Hello to Thessaloniki from Tbilisi, Georgia
Beautiful metro! Congrats Thessaloniki.

Really nice metro!! It looks sooo similar to the one in Copenhagen
They are almost the same
Love it. Hopefully they extend the lines
Congrats for opening the metro, Thessaloniki! So, all stations are underground?

@ΧρήστοςΜουλουάκης thanks, greeting from Jakarta. Our first MRT also has 13 stations.
This metro system was in building for the last 20 years
Eventually we have a new metro and this will help and combat the heavy traffic that burdens the city!
I like the new Thessaloniki metro
Yeah but it took over 18 years
Thank you my friend. You are welcome to come to the city for vacations and travel around with it!
it's not a joke anymore
Saloniki metro is the best metro in Thessaloniki.
And where is the worst metro in Thessaloniki?
A new metro system❎A new history museum under ground ✅
😂

I'm Athenian myself, but I'm becoming so jealous of Thessalonians. At last they've got their metro network, which is spectacular!
Don't worry. We got Line 4 coming 5-6 years (Hopefully)
What station is this at 9:11 @central-city?
Analipsi.

I was surprised to hear that construction plans existed as early as 1918.

That info is a bullshill mate
@@lazakidimopoulos They existed as an idea in the plans of rebuilding the city from the fire of 1917. So not exactly bullshit
Yes! They chose Ansaldo-Breda trains!

How can they afford this? I guess the public debt isn't getting paid anytime soon.

The public debt is being paid and has been reduced. The E.U funded the metro mostly
German taxpayers money through EU founding.
