I love your videos. I value you your honesty and happy-go-lucky attitude. Thank you so much for your fine reporting. I think I really want to go to this onsen!
I really like the zooms during the exterior night shot that are in perfect time with the drum strikes. High quality production as always. Please, keep it up! Edit: I posted this before the section about tattoos. THANK YOU! I really appreciate you including this bit of information. As a tattooed person I had given up hope of ever being able to go to a traditional onsen and you have given me hope!
Wow, nice to know that some bath houses let tattooed people in. There's a sento in Asakusa that does as well (it's where I like to relax on my trips), and I keep telling my best friends (who are tattooed, one heavily tattoed) how good the baths are. They're raring to go, but are not allowed to for the majority. I applaud Dogo Onsen for being brave and knowing that us crazy gaijin like to permanently draw on ourselves, but we're just normal people, not underworld figures.
I think it's for several reasons. 1: tourist revenue is very important to paying for repairs and upkeep of such an old building. 2: ensuring that the building is never empty on a daily basis, and thus ensuring the workers are never without. 3: tattoos were only associated with criminals from the time of Westernization onwards. 4: I'm sure some colorful characters have been regular customers at various times in Dogo's history, so the owners/management just shrug and say, "no funny business while you're here."
What an amazing place! I love all your shows! They're so fun to watch! It's like going on these wonderful adventures with you! :) Thanks for bringing us along! Japan has always had a special place in mine and my husband's hearts. We can't wait to visit one day. In the mean time, we'll get our "cultural fix",so to speak, from watching "Only In Japan" ! Thank you for making such great shows!!! :) Can't wait to see where you'll go and what kind of fun craziness you'll get into next!!
This series has taught me so much about Japan. I didn't even know Japan was made up of 4 islands before. Now I can name them. So many interesting things to learn.
Thank you, John, for these wonderful videos. My love of the Japanese people and their incredible culture increases with every one I watch. Arigato gozaimasu!

Thank you so much for going and filming matsuyama. i used to live there at a short period of time while studying the Ehime university through study abroad. i used to walk around the Dogo onsen all the time and took a bath there once. i hope you enjoyed your time there. it truly is a relaxing atmosphere.
I really wanna go to Japan some day. I love everything about it, the culture. the food, the nature. This is definitely something I'm gonna have to do in my life.
Great video it takes me back in time. I had the pleasure of visiting Dogo Onsen when I lived in Sakaide years ago and it was a wonderful experience. The sento and onsen culture is something I really miss about Japan. It always made me feel so healthy after visiting one of these baths. Keep up the good work.
Ty Jon! Another amazing video. The women's more private bath on the second floor was so beautiful. It looked so warm and relaxing! You have the best more informative channel! I would drop anything to watch your videos. I definitely would like to visit this onsen!
I really wanted to jump in there but it was already midnight when I started filming that bit -- had to be up at 5:30am to set up and film the morning tower scene. THANK YOU!! So happy you are enjoying the series :) -john
this was wonderful. thank you. I'm a big fan of Miyazaki, so it's great to see this onsen's influence on that in Spirited Away. have you addressed contemporary Japanese literature? I'd like to learn more about Yukio Mishima, Haruki Murakami, Banana Yoshimoto, and others. thanks.
I love seeing how anime and real life sometimes meet :) it would be interesting to do something with literature in Japan. Publishers are so protective of their content (Shueisha and their manga) that getting access to just interviews is challenging. It would have to be something fun and different so not sure how to approach it yet. Thanks for the idea! -john
