I’ve never understood how people can judge someone by their skin tone. I was bullied due to my pale skin that would NEVER tan despite living in the desert. I was either a pale red head, or a burned/peeling red head. In regards to people in my life, I hung out with people who shared interests. Skin/preference/ethnicity never even pops into my head. We all live our lives and others live theirs. If we happen to cross paths then we are only better for it. That’s what I grew up believing and will continue to believe.

I subscribe to your way of thinking also. I'm 64 now but even in my younger dating years, when racism was much worse, I couldn't understand why others had such strong attitudes when I dated outside of my own race. And I've dated several different races too. My criteria was how they treated me and others, not a skin tone.

Maybe OP's MIL will see this as a wake up call. MIL and FIL attending marriage counseling is a good sign.

  • @patpaiz5693

I happen to understand that violence and hitting someone is not something that should be done, but it also seems that the MIL was not ever going to straighten out. I can't believe that the FIL actually deserved charges being filed against him, but MIL was one of those people who kept pushing, and pushing and pushing, and the truth is that verbal and emotional about is every bit as harmful and should be considered every bit as vile and unacceptable as physical abuse, and MIL would not stop. It seems that everyone was trying to do what they could to deescalate the situation, rein MIL in, limit her ability to continue to hurt OP, but it wasn't working. In a personal way what really should have happened long before the wedding and the situation escalating to FIL slapping MIL is she should not have been allowed to attend the wedding. She is an extremely toxic witch, and she really needs to be having restraining orders filed, divorce papers serviced and her kicked out of the family and cut off with no family. She is never going to learn and all that is actually going to happen if her husband, kids, and everyone continues to think of her as a human being that is capable of learning or being redeemed is that she is going to continue to pull this toxic shit and eventually go way too far at some point with the wrong person. There are some people who are too vile to actually be living in this society and she is one of them. She is a disgusting waste of skin and the sooner the decent people around her recognize that fact and cut her totally out of their lives the better.

The reason the father in law slapped the mother in law was he had reached a breaking point, he had probably been trying to correct the mother in laws racist backwards views for ages and reached his limit when the thought of her racism ruining the daughters wedding crossed his mind. The idea of a full blown fight triggered by the MIL's words and actions broke the seal on his pent up emotions and he did the only thing he could to prevent a worse outcome. I'm not defending physical assault but when compared to other posdible outcomes such as the wedding being called off, the OP breaking up with her boyfriend, the cost of cancelling the wedding or even the separation of the 2 families as the husband's family may not look to kindly towards the mothers blatant racism, i think the slap shock reaction was probably the least worst solution. Nowhere near the best but at definitely not the worst solution.

This is one of those stories I feel like I'm being hand held to hate some, love others. No. This family, this father, was perfectly fine with rcist Mag before OP showed up. Why did dad marry a racist, hm? Like the hand held story of the political candidate husband cheating with OPs aunt. We were supposed to not notice OP and mom were going to dupe the voters to not see the demented family they were. If it weren't for husband dying, I had a feeling they were going to give him a free pass.
    All demented, not just Mag.

Sadly, sometimes love blinds you to the obvious red flags until it's too late. love is like wearing rose-colored sunglasses, all the flags look the same color so you can't tell apart green and red flags apart... they're just all pink.
Picture that you're an white boy dating a white girl, right? You wouldn't notice that the parties your girlfriend keeps on bringing you to is consisted of only white people, especially if the area you live is populated with mostly white people. You're used to being around others like yourself even though you're not racist and is perfectly okay hanging out with people who aren't like yourself. so you literally never think about that part. But when you find out that she and her father are racist? blam, all those seemingly innocent parties now doesn't seem so innocent anymore in hindsight. That's how easy it is to overlook red flags, especially if you live in an area where the topic of racism isn't likely to be brought up due to demographics living in the area.
people say that you should always discuss the topics of wanting kids or not, religious, etc during the dating process. I think we should definitely add on the race talk too, just to make sure we all don't accidently date racists.

@@C.Church you have a point. but the animation that came with the story made me think that she was the only black person that had been introduced to that family as litterally everyone else was white.
Which made me think that's the reason why nobody noticed that she was a racist on top of being an overall unpleasant person. Their thought process was proably that she was being an asshole AGAIN and that it had nothing to do with race... until the witch made it perfectly clear that it was in fact about race, and not just her being an total witch as usual.

Commenter 2 from last update: We know its you Mag the Mad. You point out she is financially dependent on her husband, when she refuses to get a job. She gets slapped at her daughters wedding for publicly being racist, she is like that because she did it to herself. The slapping action was a mistake, yes, but her not wanting to get a job is not anyone elses problem except hers and her husband.

Honest Father in law did good. I mean mother in law was bad seriously bad she was basically a racist and bad. She was evil and u shouldn't act just because of his slap. The mother in law needed to some sort of punishment. I don't think he's abusive to her it was his first time slapping her.
Should just ignore her even if she oneday finds out ur father is rich. Because honest him being having too much stress on can do that and thanks to mother in law acting up being bad n her not working breaks him

While slapping her was not right, and his extreme stress level is certainly a factor in his impatience, it does not excuse the slap, I do not believe he is an abuser as a few suggested, because he in fact did apologize and admit it was wrong ( and yes I know many abusers do that) it was a first time and he immediately joined his wife in couples therapy to resolve the problem, most real abusers refuse to do that don't they?...his wife seems less remorseful about her ongoing, long standing, aggressive behavior that is just as abusive,.... seems like there is more than one issue for the therapist to guide them to address...
